SAMs - target ceiling

Post by Stealth2017 »

Hi,

I would like someone to explain me how the target ceiling is calculated for the SAMs, is it relative to the sea level or the actual elevation where SAM is located.

As you can see from this capture:Image

I could not launch the missiles against Chinese EA-03 Soar Dragon UAV flying at 258866m since the target altitude is higher than the weapon's ceiling 25772m= Target ceiling for Patriot 24384m + Elevation 1388m = 25772m.

The second scenario - the same assets but the different elevation for SAM,I get the message "The target altitude is higher than the weapon's ceiling 24384m=Elevation is not taken into consideration/calculation, why?

This is what confuses me, in one scenario the elevation of SAM is added to the target ceiling and for another it is not a case. Please can someone tell me why? Am I doing something wrong here?

Kind regards,

It would be great if this game allows over-range engagement, because we need to account with both target and missile’s arriving positions. Accompany with range extension by higher elevation, the range sphere can also be dynamically changed too.

<looks at the source code, confirms it does>

<looks at the manual, p.130 "DLZ and why it matters", confirms this is explained>

DLZ (Or whatever it applies to estimate where missile/aircraft goes) doesn’t work with normal AA, I only see it functioning with anti-ballistic missiles.

But whatever. I can’t always expect a target will get in range after I fired a shot. A simple turn around and it will be useless.

Yes it does.

Shoot a missile at an incoming high-speed aircraft.

Now shoot the same missile at the same high-speed aircraft but receding, all other conditions equal.

Observe the difference in shooter-to-target launch range.

That's real life. Plenty of actual engagement cases where exactly this happened.
