Is it the case the only closest comparison today would be with Atlantic Fleet?

Fighting Steel
Being that there have been a few threads mentioning old games, i though i might add this too - that the old game Fighting Steel is still fantastic and if you add the NSW Fighting Steel Project Mod and also the Dgvoodoo files, then it can still work quite well on Windows 10 even (with high resolution and only a minimum of graphical oddities- but remember to switch off "waves" in the settings) -but this being said, well if anyone were to do a remake that would be quite nice
- that or Great Naval Battles Series

I used to really love playing naval miniatures! Guess I still have them somewhere buried deep in the attic. Can't say as I have ever tried Fighting Steel or Atlantic Fleet.

RE: Fighting Steel
i would love to have the miniatures and rules and opponents to play naval tabletop games for sure! lacking that pc games are the closest thing - my interests are always cycling between surfacenaval-napoleonic-submarine-armoured-scifi and as i reinstall games on to my windows 10 laptop at the moment following windows 7 eating itself and dying, i am quickly going through this cycle! i just got M1 Tank platoon 2 working tonight!

I still have my Fighting Steel CD-ROM. I was thinking about installing it on my computer the other day. I see the Fighting Steel Project is still available on the NWS site. It would probably run on my computer because my computer is so old.

recently played a miniatures game of SeeKrieg - Bismark vs Hood battle.
Its as old school as is possible to be. Each shell is tracked. And not just where it lands but where it then penetrates through.
Reminiscent of Star Fleet battles damage sheets.
And a more immersive experience I haven't had for decades.
First salvo from Eugen carries the flag bridge away of Hood. So no fleet signals. First salvo from Hood hits Bismark rear deck. Penetrates down to aft magazine, which had to be flooded to prevent explosion. So no rear turrets on Bismark.
Now that's an even battle.
Bismark eventually retreated under smokescreen from prinz E. When reports of bulkheads giving way forward meant speed of 9kts only possible.
Shame signals never reached the cruisers to close to attack. They shadowed throughout.
Can't see Bismark getting away after that encounter.

I love it, ezz! I cannot tell you how many times I have fought that engagement in miniature, with the Bismarck always trying to keep the proper range to hit the Hood with plunging fire.
I do remember having the North Carolina square off against the Bismarck in one battle. They could not drastically harm each other at a distance, so the range continued to close until even the secondary batteries of both ships were fully engaged. They tore each other to shreds at point blank range, but both refused to sink. The virtual carnage was horrific.

If your system is XP or older you shouldn't have a problem.

RE: Fighting Steel
The first game was the best - Great Naval Battles
It featured a good Kriegsmarine campaign.
Wish they would make a modern version of that game.
The second game - I think it was Guadalcanal - was also pretty good.

well i have Fighting Steel running well now on Windows 10, though it would be great to see some new iteration of it - like with the graphics of World of Warships but with the complexity of somehting like Fighting Steel or Action Stations

RE: Fighting Steel
I loved the exasperated tone in the American guy's voice when it said "Sir, one of our ships missed the signal to turn and has detached itself from the division"(sigh)(rollseyes). He also sounded incredulous when a US torpedo actually exploded "One of our torpedoes has struck an enemy ship!(would you believe that?!)
There's game called Jutland that is real-time 3D world war 1 naval combat. The AI is kind of stupid, though.

those voices are in Fighting Steel? i have not heard those, my disks are the german version admittedly but even still - i will have to check my settings, as i have not heard any voice audio when playing fighting steel ever to be honest.
Are you thinking of Jutland from Storm Eagle Studios? or the old Software Sorcery Jutland game which was similar to the Great Naval Battles titles, (i have actually just gotten a boxed copy of that old Jutland game actually - another old diamond in the rough, the kind of good old game that GOG.com sadly will prob never bother to rerelease - they need to do more microprose and SSI strategy games first of all at least)

The SES one. Not recommended, but they were pretty ship models. I hear they've pretty much dropped support for it.

RE: Fighting Steel
well i actually already have that SES one and Distant Guns, but i havent gotten round to playing it- they dropped support for it seriously? what else have they got in their small catalogue; it looks to me like the Jutland game was the only worthwhile thing they had going.
