Kinda gamey fragmenting units for that purpose, IMO, and the buy back costs of destroyed units
is bargain basement anyway.

far as getting behind you up north, I think Francois slipped something by me as well. There just not enough, maybe company
Bn size units to scout with up there.

RE: 1942 January 16
That was the only way to do it before buy-back of destroyed land units was introduced. Now I use the buy-back system. Of course there are still some fragments floating around but they are incidental, such as when a land unit is airlifted but some devices are too large. Radars come to mind, but motorized support is also too large. The infantry unit from Rabaul had the parent be 5 motorized support devices after the rest of the survivors were taken out by PBY's. There is a fragment of a base force at Cagayan with just a device (forget if it is radar or observer device) too large for air transport, and another such case at Cebu. The bulk of those units (now the parents in fact) are at Darwin.ORIGINAL: RangerJoe
I just subscribed. I will learn a lot more from this one as well.
A suggestion, for Singapore as well as elsewhere, evacuate a fragment - even just a single support squad - from any unit that you can so you won't have to buy back the unit. From Singapore, send the fragment to OZ or somewhere else that is safe and start letting it take reinforcements there. Doing so from the unit screen will allow the fragments to take replacements. Simply stockpile any device that you don't want to go into those units yet. Even just support squads and engineers from the fragments should help you build up somewhere else.
I just reinstalled the game onto my new hard drive (Win 10[:@]) so I also have to make all of the modifications that I want as well. I will try to get tracker working as well for my games now so I can try the evil side as well as possibly some PBEM.

So there is armour coming through the Yenan area toward Sian, on the Loyang road to Sian, on the Nanyang road to Sian, and I think also on the Ankang road. Not sure about the road to the east of Sian.ORIGINAL: zuluhour

That's quite a priority concentration. It tells of the Empire's high level plan to bust through Sian and break into the Chungking plain from that side thereby bypassing defenses south of Chungking. Cheeky buggers!

I spent a quiet Sunday afternoon catching up on this AAR. A very interesting read ! Keep up the good work.

INVADED
Amphibious TF 88 offshore of Dagua
Amphibious TF 114 offshore of Tandjoengselor
Amphibious TF 145 offshore of Galeia
Clark Field, Cagayan, Pontianak, Singapore are also invested.
CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Serasan is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Moulmein !!!
Overall
• No data on KB1.
West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• The sub dance continues, currently 1x single-sub TF and 1x 2-sub TF near SF.
• The Convoy is ready to go and will try to evade the subs while ASW groups suppress them.
• 2nd USMC Para Bn is 3 days out from Midway Island. The APD's are escorted by BB's Colorado and Warspite. No DL on the convoy, and no DL on Midway. Reiterating: Colorado and Warspite will be dropped off at Pearl Harbor for future assignments.
Pacific
• Enemy submarine presence still minor, only 1 detected near Suva. Does this signify the island of Fiji is an Imperial target for invasion or the Empire believes we will reinforce/supply it and looks to sink ships there?
• One week for Yorktown to join her sister fleet carriers.
• Lots more fuel in the area but mostly no where to unload it. Tankers have been unloading at Pago Pago as ships fuel up there. Other tanker convoys are spread out in case of Imperial incursion.
New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• A small supply convoy (2 merchants, 1 escort) is at Port Moresby beginning to unload. No carriers on search. There is still (far a number of days) what might be a fast transport TF at Buna, a convoy at Rabaul, and a BB-centered TF at Rabaul. We are moving in a P-40E group which takes up CAP tomorrow.
• A convoy with 9 squadrons of fighters and medium bombers will arrive at Melbourne in 3 days. A convoy with 3x USA base forces is about 9 days out from Melbourne. USA II US Fighter Command air HQ is about 2 days by train away from Charter Towers (the developing 4EB base for Port Moresby defense).
• A double dose of "Heavy Volume of Radio transmissions" at Truk today. Is KB1 there?
Philippines
• Slow pain.
DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• The damaged DD sank today when it put to sea to escape.
• I am transferring the TB groups to Australia so they can aid the defense of Port Moresby. And of course the deadly Wirraway group too.
China
• Look at the line up of artillery the Empire has brought here!
• This is the open terrain hex bordering Changsha, Siangtan, and Hengyang. Our unit will cross the river into Henyang tonight.
• SigInt confirms armour on the road to Ankang.
India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• A nice defensive catch in the air over Moulmein. But on the ground the enemy was supreme. Our own bombers made no difference to events below.
• Our forces in the next line will be crushed during the river-crossing shock attack, and the 33rd Division is already moving to cross the river. Rangoon will be evacuated of non-combat units at once. Combat units will yield when the enemy arrives.
• One problem is that when a battered, otherwise useless unit unit was ordered to move NE from that blocking hex Intel (the movement box in the LCU display) was had of enemy presence in that hex. Is that enemy far enough along in crossing the river to Pegu to trap our forward units?
Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Someday.
Complete combat report attached.

Ship losses in the recent Imperial incursion. This should help drive home how irresponsible and dangerous those harbor overflights are.
I still am skeptical about CVL Ryujo being sunk because I did not see corresponding ground losses for Ryujo's aircraft. Or did that bit of Intel leakage get plugged in a patch? Anybody know?

I looked at that other squadron, the one that was at Sydney. They are Albacore's, 8 planes out of 8. Right now they are hopping up to Port Moresby to see if they can get some shots in at that fast transport TF but it might be gone before they get there.ORIGINAL: witpqs
You're looking at them. There is also a 3-plane squadron at Denpasar. So all 27 planes are Vildebeest's.ORIGINAL: zuluhour
anything left of the RAF Swordfish and the like?
There's a squadron at Sydney that was a squadron plus a detachment. Both parts had losses and I got them combined to the parent squadron which is about half strength now. Of course they are out of theater.

I do believe they show up as "ground" losses if they were on the ship. If they land in the water, then they are considered "operational losses" - at least as far as I have seen.

Yeah, I just couldn't be sure that the ground losses things hadn't been changed in the more recent patches and I missed it.
At any rate Ryujo was torpedoed at night for heavy damage so certainly would not have launched any aircraft; any losses should have been ground losses. At least she's out of the war for a few months.

Looks like you have that offload move covered. Some units on the yellow road connection and It'll take him so long to get there you can set up in the x3 to build some forts.

RE: 1942 January 18
I have been trying to cover cross country but the vector straight west from where they are now is puzzling. Rough-woods, then mountain, then another rough-woods to arrive at the road. Or go straight through another full rough-woods then onto clear terrain. Quite a long way through bad terrain where supplies can't follow and would have to be airlifted.ORIGINAL: obvert

The units I have heading to that road head are zombies with little or nothing in the way of heavy weapons. I'll watch and see if I need to beef up defenses there.
I've also thought about the possibility one or more of the newly arrived units was ordered to move to Ankang, found the road blocked and automatically is pathing around it. When it gets noticed movement orders will be changed. But I better defend in case it is purposeful.

I'd be interested in seeing this as well, if that's ok ? I'm in the process of starting my 2nd PBEM game, Allies again, and I am following both this AAR and Zuluhour's AAR with keen interest. Trying to learn from two experienced players !
RE: 1942 January 18
IIRC Alfred's thesis is that China requires a mobile defence strategy, using interior LOCs on the railroads to move mobile units to stop IJA thrusts and to outflank him where he is weak. Trying to form a static defence line is a doomed strategy in Alfred's books. I think the mobile defense was to include a few Western units like anti-tank guns and AA units and some tanks if they can make it in before the Japanese close the Burma Road.ORIGINAL: witpqs
