Good guess though it will be a bit hard to pick the manufacturer Grumman (TBF-1C) or General Motors (TBM-1C) from this photo as they were practically identical. It definitely isn't a TBM-3 with double cowl intakes.

don't know if this is a crash or more likely a dump. Someone should know what this cowling belonged to.

edit: I wonder if this is from a TBF or a TBM-1C?

Thank you so much for these pics. When I have visited battlefields, like Gettysburg and Antietam, I am always humbled and moved by the fact that so many people gave their lives in this place where I am now walking. There is a sense in the air that you can feel but not describe. I get something of the same sense by looking at these pictures and recalling what I have read of this battle. So, thank you again for sharing.

I couldn't of said it better. I guess that is the feeling I had. Same feeling when I visited Guadalcanal and Normandy.

This is on the little peninsula that is the South side of the Seabee made artificial lagoon now know as South Dock. Our boat is also anchored here so it makes sense.

This was maybe 200 yards long. It was impossible to see it all.

I do doubt that this air conditioner dates to WWII.
