Collapsing Buildings

Post by RobertMc »

A few comments on the collapsing buildings that have been part of the SP series since its beginning:
The original Panzer Strike/Typhoon Of Steel tactical games Gary Grigsby did for SSI prevented armored vehicles and trucks from entering building hexes. I was surprised to see that system changed when the first SP came out, because the collapsing buildings and subsequent immobilization of vehicles has caused much trouble and makes little sense.
Maybe in a few isolated cases in WW2 some tankers drove their vehicles into buildings to take cover, but it didn't happen very often.
I wish the building hexes had been made off-limits for vehicles. The computer opponent is going to be smashing and crashing its vehicles every whichaway (just as in the original SP). I don't see--and never did see--what the collapsing buildings is supposed to signify: a runaway vehicle with a wounded or dead man at the wheel? Surely no soldier with any sense is going to crash their ride into a building.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. My download's still in progress, so I haven't had a chance to play yet, but I've seen comments about the collapsing buildings both here and on the historical gaming newgroup.
Thank you in advance, Matrix, for the extreme hard work and the dedication to making Steel Panthers the game we all hoped it would be.

I personally like the collapsing buildings, although I agree the AI goes overboard in making its paths. There are times I want to enter a building to set up an ambush or to avoid being spotted on a street.
