Hopefully this map shows what is going on around hex 92,47. It was recently vacated by 4 Chinese units which moved into the north west hex leaving behind an administration unit. Parachute troops from Shanghai are order to drop on the admin unit tomorrow and that should clean up this swamp hex. More importantly it should trap those 4 units and they can then be destroyed.

Intel reported an admin unit. Turns out to be a sizeable base force. Considering what they jumped into the parachute troops did well. Not sure how they will go tomorrow but supplies (rice balls and the like) will be flown in and hopefully that will keep them going. Relief via the ground is a couple of weeks away. If they survive the coming assault I will consider flying in more troops.

I have been doing a review of the ACM and CM assets in this mod. To date most of the To’su class xAKL have been converted to ACM duty. A good little ship to keep 150 mines in order. I am intrigued about the net tender function that comes with the mod. The net tender function operates much like a mine having an effect of 100 (slightly better than the Type 4 at 88) and accuracy of 20 (this is by far and away the best accuracy of the Japanese mines with the Type 92 coming in next at 12). An interesting weapon and one that I do wish to employ. So which ships sport this feature. The To’su class doesn’t but the ACM versions of the Kiso (ex xAKL), the Hashima and Hatsutaka (both ex CMs) and the Toho (another ex xAKL and the reason why this was converted the ACM is lost to me) all have anti-submarine nets. Kiso appears to be the best as it also carries depth charges whereas the other 2 conversion only carry the nets. To bolster my ACM numbers and thereby create more permeant minefields conversion of more Kiso class to ACM is planned.

Now, as for the CMs. Japan does start out with plenty of this type. There is even a bunch of Yusen N running around with the ability to carry more than 300 mines. Conversion back to AK is required (once they have deployed their mines) so they can haul resources. Most of the CMs which can convert to ACM will do so. These ships generally have the ability to convert to Escort in ’43 and they should be more useful in that role so that is also an option down the track. There is one class of CM (Hashima class) with the ability of deploy the type 92 mine. As mentioned before it is the most accurate Japanese mine, however, it can only be deployed by the Hashima class. It also has a build rate of 50 a month so not a big supply coming through. The Hashima class has been converted to ACM except for the lead ship of the class. The reason for doing so was the low numbers produced although on the down side the Hashima can only deploy 6 of these mines at a time. The Hirashima class is the class to deploy the Type 4 mine. There are 5 in the class and they each deploy 20 mines. I am going to group them together so that 100 mines at a time can be deployed in various locations. That leaves a group of 5 other ships capable of deploying the Type 93 mine. As they tend to deploy a lot at one time they will be used sparingly.

To return then to those anti-submarine nets. Where to deploy them. The best place to put them is those ports most likely to a magnet for the Allies to attempt to mine themselves with submarines. The field is of course too big to cover. So, big well used ports versus ports not so well used but likely to be considered a good target due to likelihood of minimal defences. Any thoughts out there on good places to position these interesting looking anti-submarine nets.

How many resources do you have in Japan at this time?

Way, way less than I feel comfortable about. I have been using the HI figure as my index on how well I am keeping resources coming into Japan.

On 8 December 1941 I had 52 586 HI in the stockpile.

This figure continued to rise on a daily basis until a high of 100 226 was achieved on 29 December 1941. Then it went into free fall. On 24 January 1942 it hit a low of 36 135!!! From there it has started to rise again although it is fragile process. Currently we are at 2 February 1942 and it has moved on up to 43 889. A bottleneck in getting resources into Japan? I certainly think so. Part of the issue is me simply getting my head around the enormity of moving the bountiful stocks of resources outside of Japan back to Japan in a timely manner. Coupled with this is the mass of shipping at game start which is employed transporting masses of troops hither and yon. I am getting cargo ships into the resources transport role and this has helped to stem the tide. The other issue is the prodigious resources gobbling monsters at Tokyo and Osaka. Due to the fickle nature of resources available I regularly have reports of HI and Supply production failures at these two centres. Getting the convoy system up and running to address this issue has kept me well occupied. Getting the HI stock pile to a stage of strong growth will be a welcome relief... I hope.

You might wonder too just how much HI I am using up with express ship building. At present I only have two accelerated ships. They are Taiho and Shinano. Shinano as per LST instructions to accelerate until she arrives to negate the lower HI expenditure once she does arrive. For the time being Yamato and Musashi are both halted until HI looks better.

Perhaps there are other things I should be doing to improve HI accumulation but these are the main things going on a present.

I still have to get a better understanding of shipyards. I have probably got muddled thinking on HI and ships from tracker indicating how much HI is used up to accelerate individual ship construction. Time, I think, to go and do some ship building refresher reading and hunt down some threads on the topic. I shall also go through air craft building and shipyards and see what is producing. I know I turned a bunch of things off once the free fall started but haven't checked on them for a bit.

Yes lack of resources is definitely the problem. Has been affecting supply production but given the good stock pile of supply this is not near so aggravating a problem as HI production. Fuel, like you say, is also not an issue. On a brighter note HI jumped by over 4000 on our latest turn and with a bunch of resource convoys Home Island bound the situation is looking rosier.

It depends on how much you use your supplies. I use and need it very much.

In v1.1. - and after PM discussion with Anomander Rake - I have increased the starting resources stockpiles in the HI. However, more resource centers have been moved from the HI to the colonies and the SRA, since the ratio of resource generation at home and resource imports was heavily in favor of "home grown" resources - which is odd since Japan is resource-poor and needed to import most of their stuff. In short, even more shipping will be required for resource imports, but the timeframe provided to get convoys organized will be longer.

We (I and Dave) are playing with version where are more resource center in DEI etc (existing centers are larger).

So, as you can see by the attached graphic I currently have 1387 shipyard points available and I have turned off 100 giving me a HI saving of 300. I did some hunting around in the ship reinforcement table and came across the naval shipyard estimate (for so many years neglected by myself) and find that current estimate is for 1267 points (hence the reason why I turned off 100 naval shipyard points.

As for accelerated ships I now have Taiho and 5 destroyers accelerated. And the other big ships – Yamato is back on and will join the fleet in 7 days (from 5 February) and I have for the time being turned off Musashi and Shinano. That will be until I work out if it is feasible to consider shipyard expansion (given the extra cost to do so in this Mod).

This, at least, is my current take on naval shipyards. Do let me know if I’ve still got learning to attend to in this area.

We (I and Dave) are playing with version where are more resource center in DEI etc (existing centers are larger). The use of cargo ship is very large. Even worries me a little in the context of my fuel. It also creates additional problems with ports and engineers units. Everything is very nice.

I like that cargo ships are now an important tool for Japans war. I still have numbers in port but that is only because they are awaiting appropriate escorts to get them to where I want them. The days of having masses of cargo ships idle are long gone.

My little brain will be quite happy to muddle my way through with the settings we started out on. I think too that any changes would make a fair assessment of LSTs Mod somewhat suspect. I'm enjoying the challenge immensely. Only about 8 weeks of game time gone and I feel that I am slowly coming to understand the tightrope that LST has created. I will not be surprised if I am still figuring things out in another years time.
