Iceland/ Operation fork

Post by taffjones »

Hi Bill/Hubert
I am trying out different tactics and didn't take the DE to invade Denmark but took it by DoW.
I had sneaked a German Garrison out into the Atlantic and occupied Iceland (April 40) thinking I could use it to resupply raiders of the convoy routes.
The next turn the UK launched operation Fork and occupied Iceland. My garrison unit disappeared, no battle against the Allied forces and now Iceland has joined the Allies.
Is this a bug? OK my unit had only landed the turn before, but it was ashore and should have put up a fight and not just disappeared.
I have a saved game if you want to check it out.
Thanks for a great game.

Maybe it didn't make the 1300 mile amphibious attack thru the North Atlantic in the winter

I have the Solution for you.
If you plan to conquer Iceland and hold it with the Axis, just land at Reykjavik and move 1 hex further away from that capital, then this Stupid AI dont start operation Fork :)
After that, Iceland was a great base and you can resupply submarines within 1 turn, enjoy.

I think its a case where the Uk got asked the turn before (when there was no unit) but there's a one turn delay before it happens so and doesn't matter if there's a unit or not after that.

Hi

Korut Zelva is right, it's the unfortunate consequence of deciding to make it so that there would be a slight yet realistic delay between the UK deciding to launch the operation and it being carried out. With hindsight it would have been better if I'd set the Decision and its effect to both be implemented on the same turn.

How did you assault Iceland with a garrison?
No AV is possible with the garrison.

You transport it (getting there at cruise speed). The port is still usable when under str 5 but they have to start their turn in port to unload.

Isn't Reykjavík closer then Narvik? Seems possible to me.

Yeah, the game doesn't do 'capital ship sneaks in ground troops' used in Norway's invasion so transporting garrison by transport to achieve that could be reasonably considered a simile of sort.

Wait: if you transport the garrison, it cannot enter the port until you own it. At the moment you occupy Denmark, the port is your but a script reduce it to 1 strenght, so that you cannot enter and disembark. The turn after Iceland become independant and the transport you have in the port is moved 1 exe away.
I did try to occupy Iceland using a garrison, but I didn't find the way.

Basically you have to conquer Denmark before you are offered the decision to do it automatically.

At least that would then be a warning to the UK that this possibility exists.

Would this trigger a US reaction if pulled off?

Axis has 1 unit in Iceland within 10 hexes of Akureyri
US 8-12% increase towards Allies

It sort of balance itself out with the additional readiness.

Anyway I did conquer Iceland after Denmark occupation and subsequent Operation Fork. The way is to invest immediately (as far as you have the money) in Aphibious research. After Denmark occupation you can AVL to Iceland with the corp you have in Oslo. When the corp arrives there, nothing can stop it to conquer Iceland.

Hi Sad Ham
On turn 1 -I loaded the garrison unit in a transport, used cruise speed to get it to the northern coastline of Norway then sail normally around the Northern coast of Iceland.
I DoW on Denmark instead of taking the DE option, the port was at 5 points, Disembarked the Garrison into Reykjavík.
The next turn Britain launched operation Fork and my garrison disappeared (I noticed it in Norway 2 turns later).
Maybe if I had done it sooner it would have worked (See Bill's reply)

Instead to place the unit on the capital exe, you move it 1 exe away and then, after operation Fork, move it on the capital. I did not try your way but I think it could work as well as mine.

Sorry: how do you enter the port if you DoW? If you DoW you can only assault the port.

Hi Sad Ham
Denmark had surrendered, but I'm sure the Icelandic port stayed at 5 (maybe because there was no combat?),
So I cant really answer your question, may be a more experianced player or Bill/Hubert can explain it.
