I never disband the TF unless absolutely necessary. I will transfer all ships out and transfer in a placeholder ship if I have to. I'm not wasting those commander PPs.
Typically, I will just retain a ship or ten that only have 1 Sys damage and leave it at that.
That sir is additional good advice... cheers.
Should be standard operating procedure; a lot of PP are saved considering how often carrier TFs cycle in and out of port. I even rename the TF temporarily just so I remember what it is when browsing the TF list. Make sure the "no auto disband" option is also set!
This will also allow you to spend the PP for a TF commander with high air skill to get the planes aloft, which then allows a focus on high naval skill for the carrier skippers. Naval skill helps them with maneuvering to avoid being struck as well as damage control efforts...

I tried doing this, transferring all of the ships out of an air combat TF save one, in order to keep the TF commander (ironically it was Halsey). The TF seemed to adjust to a SCTF as a result, and I couldnt transfer a CV back to it. What did I do wrong ?

Note the type of TF in the picture I posted above... there's your hint [;)]

You have to keep a CV in it to keep it a air combat TF, or it will switch to another TF type.
RE: Halsey damage code?
When the carrier TF arrives in port, set the TF type to escort. Transfer out all ships save one (the least damaged DD usually). Dock the TF. Once a DD is fully repaired, switch it with the 1st placeholder DD if need be.
When the ships of the TF have completed repairs, transfer all ships back to the TF (Escort TFs will allow you to transfer all types... even carriers). Then switch it back to a carrier TF.

Is there any way to search for a given commander? It’s Dec 42 in my game and I realized I have no idea where Halsey is.

In most games he starts in command of TF406 with the Enterprise.
If you never disbanded it or replaced him he will still be there.
If you disbanded TF406 or replaced him he should show up in the available commanders list when seeking to change a TF commander of anything larger than small craft.
The small craft TFs pull commanders from a different list that is typically filled with Lt. Commanders.

Lexington and Enterprise were both operating as separate TF's, albeit with Enterprise TF "following" Lexington. They ended up in Sydney for refueling, and Enterprise needed some yard time. ( Perhaps some Halsey influence that you started this thread about?) Anyway, I couldnt bring Enterprise back into the TF commanded by Halsey - I put her in the Lexington TF. Halsey was thus in command of a SCTF with 3 CA's and some DD's, and promptly got involved in a reaction that took him within range of a partial KB. Lost all 3 CA's and he was killed as well. Not a good day for the USN that day...

Turn the task force into ESCORT.
Add 1st Carrier
Turn to Air Combat.
Fill out the task force.
When you fill out an Escort TF it doesn't show AAW and ASW values, Air Combat does.

Actually, as soon as you add a non damaged carrier to an Escort TF the TF automatically changes to an Air Combat TF.
As soon as you deselect it, that is.

The only ways I know to search for a commander are by going into the leader assignment menu (clicking an existing commander's name on the unit screen) OR via the 3rd party utility Tracker. Tracker is much better in this regard, as the unit assignment menu will only show you available candidates who are suitable for that particular type/size of the unit.
Tracker will show you everything and will allow you to sort/filter multiple attributes.
RE: Halsey damage code?
One of the few deficiencies of the game IMO. The Ops report dutifully informs you of (Rank) (Name) is available for reassignment but gives no clue as to which unit they are associated with. So you KNOW the guy will be reassigned by the AI in a turn or so but unless you have some kind of photographic memory you have no way of knowing which ship/squadron/LCU just lost a carefully selected commander and got a total doofus as replacement.[8|]ORIGINAL: Korvar
