Previous Axis Turn:

A German tactical bomber escorted by German fighters attacks a UK Corps south of Mersa Matruh and is intercepted by UK fighters.
UK fighters took 2 damage, and an unknown amount of damage was done to the German fighters, while the TAC bombers took damage from both the interceptors and ground fire (level 2 AA).
The Corps was unhurt, except for a small amount of morale and readiness damage.

A German army shows up south of Sidi Barani.

A German sub with a pip of experience attacks the Warspite west of Santa Cruz and does 3 damage to the battleship.

Yugoslavia joins the Allies.

A recon/strike of opportunity mission by Commonwealth tactical bombers finds an Italian HQ. It is followed up with a second tactical bomber strike on the Italian HQ.
German fighters intercept (there are 2 squadrons) and the results are as follows:
UK: FTR 5 dmg, Tac#1 3 dmg, Tac#2 1 dmg
GE: FTR#1 4 dmg, FTR#2 3 dmg
IT: HQ 4 dmg

More disturbing is the results of the reconnaissance. In addition to the two German fighters and the previously spotted German army, there are two German panzer corps, along with the artillary and reconnaissance unit.
There are also a total of four Italian armies as well.

Scout planes from HMS Illustrious find a German sub and a Heavy Cruiser (presumably Deutschland) in and north of the Red Sea loop.
Two air strikes against Deutschland do 7 damage to the heavy cruiser, but also reduce the carrier's air wing by 30%.
Warspite then sinks Deutschland, but takes 2 more damage in doing so, bringing her down to 5 strength.
Three destroyers then jump U35 (which is at str 8) and do 4 damage (and 1 back to 2 destroyers) and force a dive.
The sub that attacked Warspite is ignored.

Lancaster bombers again hit the Mons and Loos mines again bringing them down to values 1 & 5. A few bombers were lost in the raids.

Greenland becomes a US protectorate.

Barbarossa starts.
There is a rather light push through the Baltics and it is (temporarily) stopped by a Soviet Army in Kaunas.
Bialystok and Brest Litvosk are cut off. A Soviet HQ and Mech barely survive this turn, but have no chance at escape.
In the south a corps holding Przemysl survives at half strength but is cut off. Lwow and it's defenders are also taken out, by air and ground forces.* Other axis units push through Bessarabia with no resistance.
A Soviet army in Odessa is bombed twice but no land units move next to the city.

The German fleet attacks the Russian navy, sinking the Soviet CL and doing 4 damage to the BB in port (mostly from a German sub). Some damage was done back to the Germans, 2 to a BB (I think), maybe something to a CC,
4 to a DD and 3 to the sub.

Three German tactical bombers, and I believe three German fighters are in Egypt assisting the land forces. Two UK fighters take 8 damage between them, an unknown amount of damage is done to German air units.
A UK corps in a fort is not only destroyed, but the army (also fortified) behind it is attacked as well and reduced to strength 6.

Germany supports the Iraqi rebels.


* I tried the 'build an ENG' for the Soviets for this game. Don't think I'll do that again, unless maybe Germany allows a higher Mobilization level (i.e. Annexes Lithuania).
I'm now wishing I had invested in AA sooner for the Soviets and had been able to build a few more ground units earlier. Keeping the Vistula/San line (i.e. rejecting the friendship treaty) allows for making the taking of Lwow
(and more importantly the freebie units) to be more complicated. However, to do so you need a few units.

The Soviet sub does 2 dmg to the Gneisenau battle cruiser, while taking 1 dmg back. Then when attempting to move away runs into a Z-boat (DD) but still gets the better of the exchange 2 dmg to 1 dmg.

The mines at Essen are bombed as are the ones at Briey. There is confirmation of AA upgrades at the Essen and Dortmund mines. Some Lancaster casualties are encountered at Briey (apparently trees are helpful in shooting down high level bombers).

More AA is ordered for El Alamein and the surrounding fortifications.

Allied Turn July 15, 1941

Previous Axis Turn:
The German sub has the Soviet battleship pinned in port and does another 3 damage to her.
A German destroyer attacks the Soviet sub and both take a point of damage.
German forces reach Jelgava but don't manage to take the town, whittling the defending corps down to a 2 strength.
The Bialystok pocket is cleaned up, with the elite GAR unit in Godno actually damaging an Panzer corps and a Special Forces corps.
German infantry corps reach Wilno and Baranowicze. The army in Kaunas is bypassed, but not cut off.
Odessa is bombed and then taken, the Germans then are stopped Nikolayev by a corps that is itself reduced to half strength. No other resistance is yet met in the Ukraine.

In Egypt things are almost as bad. After a series of furious air battles, the two hexes west of El Alamein are taken, destroying a UK army and corps.* A German mech unit is also part of Rommel's forces.
In addition UK fighters took a total of 6 damage, while an unknown amount was done to German air units.


* I was hoping to make more of a fight of Egypt, but did not get any luck with any Infantry Weapons breakthrough added to the pretty huge extra commitment (2 GE Armies, 1 Panzer, 1 Mech, 2 FTRs, 2 TAC all added to Rommel's
base group and I presume there is at least 1 extra GE HQ, if not 2 as well). We'll see how long I can hold out.

Strategic bombers go back to hitting the Essen mine. The German AA reduces their effectiveness, but isn't as deadly as the trees.

Allied Turn July 29, 1941

Previous Axis Turn:
El Alamein is taken but not before dishing out large numbers of counter hits to both Axis ground forces and air units both in the sky and via ground fire. The Italian armor is down to a 2 strength and retreats.
A German armor moves into El Alamein and attacks the 7th Armor to the south (through a fort side even). 7th Armor takes 7 damage while the German panzer is only down to a 5 strength.
Worse there is a hole in the fort line now as the British engineers have not had time to construct a line behind El Alamein. Only a single fort hex on the road to Alexandria.

The German sub sinks the Soviet battleship in Leningrad port, while taking a point of damage itself. *Hasn't anyone ever herd of sub nets?*
German forces approach and probe Riga, the Soviet army holds strong.
Wilno is also probed and only takes a point of damage, but is threatened to be cut off.
Kaunas is again ignored and Stalin contemplates declaring it a 'Hero city'.
Brest Litovsk is cleaned up, and a German corps assault Baranowicze, which takes damage but holds for now.
German forces advance to the Dnepr and cross it at Kremenchuk and take Poltava.
German and Italian bombers hit Kiev and the army stationed there. Only 1 damage is done to the army but the troops are shaken.
AA guns had been distributed throughout the Soviet empire and managed to not only moderately reduce damage taken from the Luftwaffe but have managed to shoot down Axis planes in noticeable, if modest, numbers.

The USA sends tanks to Egypt, upsetting Turkey.

The Indian corps reaches the gates of Baghdad.
An organized pullback is ordered in Egypt, it is threatening to be turned into a route however.

The Loos mines are hit again, then bomber command switches targets and hits the town of Amiens and finds a bit more success (3 dmg, vs. 2 dmg).

HMS Warspite (str 8) engages RM Pola (CA) in one of the Malta ports. Both take 3 damage.
HMS Ark Royal & Illustrious then launch four air raids against Pola and sink her.
Another Italian heavy cruiser is spotted in port and the German paratroopers apear to be on holiday in Malta.

The Soviet sub does 1 damage to Prinz Eugen (GE CA).

The US allows the UK the use of the port in Providence.

Italians form an expeditionary force for use in Russia.

Turns out I forgot to move a handful of units last turn.
I wasn't feeling that great, but more importantly kept getting interrupted so was cycling through doing a bit and saving the game. Somewhere along the line I forgot to move them. Shame on me.

I'm not sure I'll be able to complete another turn tonight or not, but I did want to take a moment to congratulate my opponent for completely faking me out with his strategy.
I thought for sure that Sea Lion was coming. Then I was late sending additional reinforcements to Egypt, but I suspect I wouldn't have had enough to push the Italians back far enough to make the DAK come in further back. More importantly it made me delay my investment in Infantry weapons 2 by a number of turns. Not that I think that would have stopped what is inevitably going to happen, there are just far too many German units in Egypt to do that, but maybe it would've slowed him down a bit more and/or caused more damage.

I also underestimated my preparedness for Barbarossa. I think I got spoiled with that youtube game I played (even though the Soviets never got involved there or were shown).
