fog of war in Leipzig 1813

Post by gwgardner »

Fog of War is ON in the Leipzig 1813 scenario.

Searching around for photos of the Liepzig battleground I haven't been too successful, but I was just trying to get a sense of how it would been on the ground. From the map and what photos I've seen, looks like low rolling slopes at the most.

Would it be realistic to turn Fog of War off? Or even, more realistic? I haven't read enough about the battle yet to get any idea, in terms of battlefield accounts.

It's just a game, ok. Play it either way, you might say. I just wonder what the best way would be.

I didn't realize that there was a 'mountain peak' feature in TOAW, which allows for a reduction in fog of war when a unit occupies a peak. I now see that there are several peaks on the Leipzig map, so obviously fog of war should indeed stay ON when playing the scenario for the ultimate in 'realism'.

Maybe mountain peak OP’s in an 1800’s game isn’t quite realistic. Imagine an OP on a peak, observes enemy movement, spends half a day descending the mountain, needs to locate the commander, reports, orders have to be issued, orders communicated to the necessary units and movement made against units which are no longer in the observed positions. Big time delay, but in TOAW it’s like they had radio communications.

Suggest that the for pre 1920 scenarios the fog of war stay on and the mountain peak OP’s be removed.

They're actually high points from which, historically, Napoleon and Tsar Alexander and other commanders did survey the battlefield. Not mountain peaks - that's just a term for it in the game editor.
