Toggling of Nato units to 3-D units defeats FOW?

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Toggling of Nato units to 3-D units defeats FOW?

Post by Christolos »

In general, I'm not a fan of playing non-tactical level games with the units displayed as 3-D graphics. I played CEAW and Commander the Great War with 3-D units, because I didn't like the Nato units - and I sort of liked it!

So I decided to see if I could also get to like using 3-D units with SC3. To my surprise, I noticed (when I toggled to 3-D units in-game) that I could also see the 3-D graphic renderings of the units of the opposing forces, which in effect, revealed their tech level (by virtue of the 3-D graphic; e.g., jets, Panther tanks, Tiger I tanks, etc…). This information, for units that are only partially spotted/revealed, was otherwise hidden (numerically) when the units were previously displayed as Nato units.

I pretty sure this in not WAD.

Well, I've never really thought about it, but you're right. However, this fact is not really crucial to the game, is it? [:)]

Currently this is working as designed and has been this way for a long time. For example, we did think about having it simply show the lower level 3D sprite, but in some cases this would seem odd like when the interceptors are briefly highlighted on screen and if at Level-5 with jets, the image of a BF 109 temporarily showing with the sounds of a jet intercept would also feel out of place.

I too prefer things as they are. It only affects some units - not ships or infantry for example

I can understand hearing the sounds of enemy jets/knowing jets are intercepting/escorting...but tanks is a different matter as they can be static during the turn they can be revealed via the sprite that can be seen.

Perhaps an option can be incorporated such that a game started with Nato counters, cannot be switched to sprites in-game, as a way to ensure a more complete FOW experience...
