How to change battle intensity?

When I do piercing attacks (attacking from adjacent hex) I often only get medium battle intensity. How can I change that to "high"?

Press "O" when the cursor is over a battle. It'll up the attack from Attack to Assault which will increase the intensity one level, from "normal" to "high".
