Improvement suggestions

Post by headcount_slith »

Having just won a decisive victory in the 'balanced' 45-turn 2nd Alamein scenario as the Axis using just 3 of my 302 units (299 units were left in their starting positions without orders) I have some, hopefully easily implementable, suggestions that would prevent inventive players gaining absurd victories in DW by exploiting the AI's inability to defend rear-echelon VLs and supply sources.

1. Make isolated units gradually degrade and lose mobility. Right now, I think I'm right in saying, an AC can roam about behind enemy lines indefinitely while 'isolated'.

2. Ensure valuable VL hexes like Alexandria are always occupied by fixed garrison units at the start of a battle.

3. Remove recon units' ability to capture VLs.

4. Encourage the AI to use air assets in ground-attack missions when VLs or supply sources are threatened (During their run to Alexandria my ACs weren't troubled by the RAF).

I don't understand how this stuff gets through beta. Of course, your typical Paradox game takes a year or so of patches and/or DLC to become what it should have been at release. We expect this of Paradox, but less so of Matrix.

If you would like a real challenge, how about a PBEM game with me. I think it would be fun to see a different angle on this new game. Drop me a line and we can start any scenario you like. Best, Frank

I take the OP's point, but I don't know if the developer should have to code to take into account unrealistic gamey tactics that give the AI a clobbering.

Thanks for your feedback. We are in the process of implementing your "fixed garrison" suggestion.

That's good to hear. It's only fair to report that I tried an AC chevauchee in Reluctant Offensive last night, and didn't get very far. The Italians setup far more sensibly in that one than the Brits do in 2nd Alamein.

Thanks for the PBEM offer Okayrun. I'm not sure I'm ready for human opposition yet (there are still rules I haven't digested) but when I am I'll search you out.

Sounds good. I have to admit, I need some practice with the new system too. I played Rats vs the Ram as the allies, and came away with a draw against the AI. I started to get a feel for combined forces attacks, and management of supply, which really makes you think ahead and plan. Good scenario to get a feel for the open desert, but not to big. I am going to try from the Axis side next.
