There is just so much information that the player needs to know to plan properly. I have never tried one of these big campaigns, they are intriguing. Trying to figure out rail, supply, reinforcement arrival points, weather and moving air resources and then actually fighting the battles. Really cool.
I really love it Mike dude. There's a myrid of things to consider and lots of them are contingent and liable to the whims of chance. I used to play
WITP-AE mostly against Brian ( General Patton ) as he taught me amphibious landings and a proper CAP and escorts to suppress enemy fire and so on and I learned a lot. Now Brian and I are playing a game that's a LOT less detail oriented but still has so much detail you have to take notes to keep up with everything you need to do.
TOAW IV is the latest iteration of one of the finest wargames being played today. It has enough details to keep you busy and saturate your immersion meter it's got the game tools to keep up with what you need to know to make correct decisions. Every once in a while I'll run into something that needs to be adjusted but it's pretty much fine the way it is. On the unit display for aircraft units I could also use the information about how many of them I have on hand and how many I'm producing and how many are assigned and especially which formations are flying that equipment. Stuff like that. Right now you have to go to different dialogs for that information and you need to know it to know whether or not to fly that unit, etc.
But yeah, you're responsible for everything except the weather. To tell you the truth the weather doesn't influence my decisions very much. Maybe they should....maybe I'm missing another game tool afforded to players who know how to use it. I'm not sure I do.
Also, something I've noticed last turn is the state of affairs with the aircraft units. Some of them are down to 19 of 42 planes assigned. I've got him parked at Berlin overgoing an overhaul, a what you call a 1000-hour inspection, and the unit is down until it fills back up with planes and I'm not making but about 7 He-111's per turn and I need a lot more than that to fill up the squadrons again, so I've grounded the type for now to give the sparse units time to fatten up a bit. I'm getting low on Ju-88's too so I may have to ground them too. I hate fighting war without CS. That's like starting your morning without orange juice.
I have zoomed up to scope out the places where I might be able to organize something offensively,
in a big way and there's a couple of places mainly in the south where the Soviets are sparse but nothing in the north besides that big bulge and I've been working on the bulge for several turns now. I kill Soviet units but more take their place and I'm not making much progress in moving the front lines.
I think what I'll do is get a hole started in the Soviet lines somewhere south where it's easier and roll up the Soviet front lines all the way to Moscow and see if I can't get something started here.
