the actual terrain east of Nice, up to La Spezia and beyond
Thanks for the details. So your suggestion would be to extend the hills to the coast, between Nice and La Spezia ?

Naval Units and the eastern rail line from Foggia to Pescara have been added.

Really been enjoying this. Looks like it is now building up to an exciting no-quarter-given death struggle in the foothills of the Alps. Great stuff!

Great news! This should make things much easier for any Allied advance along the east coast.

As regards to the "French option", I have made some research about the Allied operations in this area: the French made some very limited advances in Italy in late April 1945, when the Allied had already broken through the Gothic Line and were advancing in the Po Valley plain.

Menton (the last French city before the border, which is not depicted on the map) was liberated on September 6th 1944. Ventimiglia, which only lies 5 miles to the East, was subject to artillery bombardments but was not attacked by the French until April 25th 1945 (the Germans already left on the 23rd). A look at Google Maps clearly shows why: between Menton and Ventimiglia there is a rocky point (Cape Mortola) with only a single road. An Allied attack there, even if successfull would only have gained the first ridge of a sequence which continues along the whole coast with no significant objective. The first pass leading to the Po Valley plain is approximately 65 miles away, near Savona, but taking this way would also imply fighting over another series of mountains, just like the ones the Allied faced on the Gothic line.

Chasing Germans in the moonlight is no mean sport

Thanks for doing the research. If you could give some specifics, terrain type and hex locations, I can make changes. Alternatively make the changes yourself and post a screen shot, or send the altered map file to me and I can try to replicate it.

22nd October 1944

No huge breakthrough this turn for the Allies facing the remnants of the Savona line as they seem to take a breather. 85th US Division did however make repeated attacks against the 40th Jager Regiment of 42nd Jager Division, who after repelling two attacks retreated in good order from the third. Those units in the line with reasonable strength and proficiency including the somewhat shellshocked KG Baumer were railed out north.

Indeed the railway workers were on overtime this turn as I used my entire rail capacity in getting units to new defensive positions in the north. Multiple bridges were blown as the Germans retreated.

A rearguard with considerable artillery support did manage to inflict over 50% casualties on the unfortunate 19th Indian Brigade of 8th Indian Division from their positions north of Arezzo as the allies pushed forward, though US armoured units and artillery are nearby so it is a very temporary roadblock I suspect.

Interdiction was light to moderate which helped in the troop movements though inevitably some units did get bombed off their trains (for some reason the area just east of Milan was a particular "hotspot")

As we approach November 1944 a nice "white out" would be good grounding all the Allied planes [:)]

There's only about 56 turns left in this game and I'm only now getting to Florence
and I'm starting to run into Germans. That means it's almost impossible to
influence the war in France from this far south in Italy. This area has become a
back water, low-burner project. The main action will eventually shift to northern
Italy near the French border. Troops are passing thro the mountain passes even as
we speak. The fighting near Savona has settled in artillery duels back and forth.
As soon as my units are green again I'll go on the offensive.

Here's what's going on in Italy. I found a German straggler in the south of this
image. Found him while clearing the terrain. It's a low-supply area and it's
difficult terrain so it's hard getting somebody to his position to kill him.

In the north I've run into a small group of Germans and none of my units have the
supply to move or shoot. So everybody up there is on a no-events policy for right
now saving up their supply so that an effort might be made to take on the Germans.

The straggler is probably wondering where all his friends went. Maybe he was drunk when the withdrawal orders arrived.

Orders were sent via the ultra efficient Ialian postal service so I really don't understand the problem😀

25th October 1944

Larry resumes his attack around the now captured town of Savona and forces open the road to Torino in the north. Two US and two British Divisions are involved as well as the 1st US armoured being present but not participating so at least 5 Divisions have piled into the area.

More evacuations by rail successfully occur and my plan is to construct three defence lines of increasing resilience to defend the Brenner Pass in addition to delaying actions by rearguard in the Florence area and in the West based on Milan and points East of it. Multiple bridges are blown and heavy artillery fire continues...

29th October 1944

Last turn of October and most of it is taken up with essential railing of the East coast infantry and HQ units back to the three defence lines that are forming. A very handy Mountain Division arrived in Brenner Pass this turn which will come in very handy given the terrain there.

The line at Savona is leaking like a sieve and has been stripped out of any decent units but is serving as an invaluable delaying tool.

Larry dropped more bridges around Milan this turn but fortunately as King Charles Ist reputedly said (when he arrived in Parliament to try and arrest the rebellious MP's to find they had been forewarned in 1640)..."the birds have flown"...so is the case here......... All Western defence line troops are now in place at the next MLR's with those from the East and centre due to arrive next turn or so.

The line near Florence continues to delay Allied advances from central Italy, and given Larry's comments...it may be the push will come exclusively from France.

Here's what's going on in Italy down south. I've got Germans in my sights but don't
have the supply to do anything about them. So the final assault has to wait for
better supply levels. The rail line is inching it's way northward and it's still
north of Rome.

1st November 1944

As the new month begins it seems both Florence (now surrounded by heavy Allied Armour) and Genovo on the Italian side of the french border are due to fall next turn. All but a skeleton defence have left and the evacuation to the defence lines north and east of Milan are all but complete save for a few Luftwaffe Flak units tasked with destroying anything that even resembles a bridge.

The critically endangered species...the "Lesser Spotted Luftwaffe Fighter" unit...got hit with two airfield attacks last turn...they aquitted themselves surprisingly well but are now pretty much extinct

The remaining units north of Savona are largely wiped out by resumption of activities by the 1st US Armoured Division.

We now await the climax of military activities in the north and digging in and resupply is busily taking place.......Six months still to hold on....

Here's what it looks like from 50,000 feet. The German units are evacuating to
Brenner's Pass and blowing bridges and leaving small roadblocks to delay.

5th November 1944

Advance elements of Allied recon units are reported to have crossed the abandoned Gothic Line defences in the East between Urbania and Sansepolero heading towards San Marino.

In Florence the 1st Bttn of the 3rd FJ Regiment's paratroops continue to hold the centre of Florence from South African, Indian and British attackers despite being cut off.

In the West fighting continues on the approaches to Genova with the Allies only 10Km away whilst the Allies are closing in on Torino from both south and west as the mountain pass from Grenoble is about to finally be cleared.

The 3 defence lines are now in place close to Brenner Pass and any reinforcements due in Brenner will be used to strengthen them.

In game turns Larry has just moved into a positive VP score of +2 this turn with +40pts being a minor victory so he is making great progress.

Here's what it looks like near the French Italian border. The Germans are still holding
up my parade and the rest of them have moved out for points north. When I get this cleared
up I'm going to take the most direct path to Brenner's Pass because I need to get there in
the next 48 turns or so.

8th November 1944

Larry drove up to the gates of Genovo where there were only a couple of battered infantry battalions and two even more battered HQ's, flew in half the bomber groups to airfields outside Genovo and unluckily failed a proficiency test :-)

As their parting shot the artillery in Genovo managed to take out a few planes on the runway which will be small consolation when they get obliterated next turn [:)]

Elsewhere lots of interdiction on my airfields again...Elsewhere...fronts stable.

Hi Guys,

Thanks UP844 for the update on what actually happened.

Larry, it is going to be close. You have some open spaces to run in, but Ian has already started making your life difficult coming out of France by taking out the bridges. The end game is going to be fun to watch.

Here's what it looks like just before I ended the turn. Progress is being made in
that I cleaned up in France and now to stream northward to see what is next.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you are a LONG way from Brenner Pass. There is only one rail going in. The passage to the left has no supply. I managed to take Brenner but it was slow going. The passage to the left was probably a waste of time but the Axis did have to defend it. You just have to shuttle units in and out on that tiny road. Once I started the push, I was able to bring in fresh units by rail and take out the depleted units.
Hint: Infantry can cross the mountains between the two passages. You'll need lots of infantry because the armored units cannot attack units in the mountains. You will have Axis units in the hex next to you and you can't attack them.
I saw they updated the scenario so I am going to start over again. :). I need to work on understanding deployment andsupply.
Hank

If you aren't part of the solution, there is good money to be made prolonging the problem.
