Radio transmission 21 hexes due west of Perth: I wonder what we have here? We are *not* running convoys through this area.

Moderators: wdolson, MOD_War-in-the-Pacific-Admirals-Edition

We have our slow periods due to RL and you might put on a burst of turns here and there like we did last weekend. I guess the biggest problem is how games diverge. Even if contemporaneous it might be of little value to you at some point.ORIGINAL: zuluhour
No arguments. I was hoping my game would keep pace with yours, but this will not be the case.
Over a month behind now and it will not be long before comparisons with Japanese moves becomes
more retrospective. I am enjoying the AAR and find some interesting comparisons and parallels
to apply to my current dilemma as it is.

[8D]
Very very coy.
I presume you are: (1) seeking to confirm a sub or (2) more importantly confirm the KB / Mini KB anticipating your fuel supply routes.
I 100% presume it is a sub or two. Does that mean I there is a 99.83% chance it's carriers?
A couple low endurance Dutch xAKs ? The KVs have a decent shot to damage the sub (if that is what it is)
Yeah, medium to low endurance. I have very limited shipping based at Perth and most of the merchants (both xAK and xAKL) are bringing Resources down from Port Hedland while that's possible. A couple of single xAK, with escorts, are running supplies to Darwin and other points on the coast as needed. I thought about waiting and grabbing a a couple of xAKL but I realized xAK will be much more convincing, I just hope he does not get a ship name and look up its endurance in the database. That's something Intel Monkey should provide as time goes on. The two KV are to be a credible looking escort, as the two xAK are to be a credible looking part of a convoy. Many (I think most) times subs only see part of a convoy. The KV's might damage a sub, but the real purpose of the operation is...
to convince him it is a convoy route so he keeps sending subs there. [;)]
The question that begs to be asked:
You categorically state you are NOT running convoys this route !
Correct. I made certain strategic decisions about convoys at the beginning of the game. Partly I did it this way to avoid predictability. Adjustments and exceptions will be made as and if genuinely needed of course.
The only item routinely sent from the western Indian Ocean to the eastern Indian Ocean is Oil from Abadan to Australia. One smallish tanker at a time is all required because the Oil accumulates very slowly at Abadan.
So where are you running convoys ?
Here I will only answer for places you do not specifically ask about below (those are answered below).
I do not use the Auto Convoy system. I do use CS convoys plenty, and coupled with waypoints (which they do allow) they are pretty flexible.
Convoys to northern Pacific areas are sent as needed and pretty much route directly.
CS convoys are set up for Pearl Harbor and use waypoints to circumvent the obvious direct routes and known submarine hunting grounds to the extend possible. Convoys to Midway and islands closer to Hawaii than to Pago Pago are sent from Pearl Harbor as needed. Also Christmas Island, Palmyra, and Canton Island have benefited from many single xAK which arrived at the Panama Canal, loaded, made the direct run, then headed to Pearl Harbor all without escort.
In all cases troop and aircraft convoys run when, where, and by routes as needed.
1) Only Continental USA to Australia via New Zealand ?
Yes. With the exception noted above (Abadan Oil) no external convoys to Australia/New Zealand from the west, only from the east, meaning from the US West Coast.
2) Hub and spoke to the aforementioned Pago Pago and or Suva ?
Yes, to a point. Pago Pago is distributing Supply to some places but the amounts are pretty small as the forces present are pretty small except for Fiji. Fiji has maybe 35 or 40k Supply most of which either loaded at or routed on ships through Pago Pago.
3) Capetown to Adelaide and thus further south?
Nope. None of that, but I hope thousands of sub-days are spent looking there!
Currently all Supply and Fuel convoys (often combined) run from the West Coast direct to New Zealand and Australia, all hand-routed with waypoints. Adjustments are made en route as needed. Auckland was avoided as a destination early on because of subs. Any place northeast of Melbourne is avoided same. Melbourne has been avoided by some convoys which continued to Adelaide due to subs near Melbourne.
4) Not hub and spoke from Columbo - because you emphatically state Columbo is not safe at the current time....
Colombo is a destination. Convoys are still running from Cape Town to Colombo and from Bombay and Abadan to Colombo and will continue as long as possible.
Lots of CS convoys run from Abadan to Karachi and a few to Bombay and Colombo. Some CS convoys from Aden to Bombay/Karachi (Aden gets very little Supply).
Hmmmmmm a new tactic we rookies have never contemplated ?
Don't know about that. I assume if you sat down to analyze it you could come up with many improvements.

Wasted sub patrols on the party of thy enemy....
This may be one of the best insights / tactics written of in AARs in many many months...
Certainly something new to me.
Clearly something for all PBEM players.
Perhaps many do it but never recorded as such
Fits in nicely - with your other lesson to me "time in patrol (subs) is critical".

I did not recognize Argleton as the home of the school of dezinformatsiya [8D]
You are quite right, but I want to point out there are two very different slices to this. One - which Walter and I very deliberately do not play - is the "off the board" game. That's a significant part of what you are quoting with Nemo's explanations. That is fine, but like other things both players have to be good with it, and we don't practice it. We do a little light banter here and there but purely as friendly comical interaction and there is never any attempt to lead/mislead/whatever "off the board".ORIGINAL: BBfanboy

It was Nemo who made the notion of "playing the player" the way to conduct the game. Most of the best players here try to get inside their opponent's head and play with his suppositions. Nasty, brilliant, stuff! [&o]
