Considering you are only in June '42, I wonder in the actual war, how many 6" and large shells did the Allies have? You have done a lot of naval bombardments. Would they have come down and told you they are producing more but it will take 'x' months to get them to Singapore?

Which warships now have the best experience levels?

They've been shipping them through the East Coast to Cape Town for months now. [;)]

Several DDs are pretty high in both day and night experience. I think a few cruisers are approaching 70 experience in night as well. I'll have a look soon and see if I notice a few that are exceptional. Really, though, all the ships that have survived these first six months are doing well for crew experience.

After the big turn with the CV fight not much to report on the 27th. The CVs get back to Singers, and it looks like the KB heads to the Southwest coast of Indochina. That was a decent run for damaged ships, so I'm hoping that did some more damage.

Tomorrow the Allied CVs will move out again to about 10 hexes from Saigon and Cam Ran Bay. I have some ideas, and I also want to keep the KB as far from shipyards as possible. We'll see if he moves back toward Bangkok or out to Cam Ran Bay.

So either his carriers didn't get hit as badly as you thought, or maybe he split the cripples off somewhere? Maybe disbanded them in a base to put the fires out? Or maybe the badly hit carriers already sank, restoring mobility to the rest of the KB? I'm sure time will tell.

Well, that's not what I'm thinking.

In this first move he only had them travel 8 hexes. I didn't expect without torpedo hits that they'd have a lot of engine damage, but I do think there were some fires going and for the ones with reduced speed this could push those fires higher. Anything other than cruise speed will inhibit damage crews from working at their best and will put strain on the ship, so could incur more damage.

It's feasible that a CV like Junyo that makes 7 knots a cycle (14 total at flank) could do 8 in both even if hit pretty hard.

If only Russian forces are used and the base is Soviet, it might not support allied ops (other than ship repair) but if US or British forces are in the invasion their first-unit-in-the-stack HQ would get admin. control of the base and that should mean that it operates as an allied base (unless the code says the national affiliation of the base determines this).

It depends on the country code, not the base assignment.

So I've sent some Allied US Army "observers" and "consultants" to the Soviet east, and they are able to be in a Soviet (country coded base) like at Okha. I landed and flew them there.

Not sure if the engineers are working? Or if they will take part in battles? Or if the base flag is changed will I be able to use Allied planes there? I am not planning on that for Okha, but this makes sense to me at the island bases extended from the Aleutians.

Sorry, I was referring strictly to bombing from those bases. You wouldn't be able to transfer non-Soviet planes in at all.

I've been traveling in Paris, so a few days behind here. I'll go over the action, because the intensity of this game hasn't let up.

The next turn provided a few more surprises. On the 28th as the Allied CVs sortied, into range of many of the ASW TFs operating in the area, and I'd hoped to hit some of them. Instead the KB moved out as well, and Mitchner reacted. Wapow! Another CV clash!

Half of the escort was in the other CV group set to follow the USN. My bad there, but all of the other surface TFs followed the reaction, just not he RN CVs. So the strike hit a tough IJN CAP and only a few DBs made it through for hits.

Kaga, Shoho and Taiyo each took a 1000lb bomb, and Shoho should be in some trouble now. I hope Kaga keeps burning for a bit. The USN is hurting for SBDs now but hopefully there won't be another CV clash for a few months based on this one.

I do plan to take advantage of this by sending troops onto Borneo immediately. I've got some partially prepped for vacant Sambas and others will attempt a fast transport landing at vacant Jesselton. I have others already loaded and moving that can pile on once the base is taken. After that there will be a cascading series of landings at key bases on Malaya, starting with Johore Baru, then Mersing, then up farther at Alor Star if that is still not reinforced. I'm also prepping for Victoria Point and further along the Burma coastline, right up to Pegu. So if this all goes to plan, the IJA will have some new threats to deal with.

Most importantly, I see no way now for the Japanese to save the six Singapore divisions that are trapped in Johore Baru, Mersing and Kluong, without KB support.

This is getting wild and crazy.

About twenty sub encounters with a series of very large TFs made up of numerous transports and support ships also shield the damaged KB CVs as they move. The Allied CVs do not pursue, and I also keep the surface ships back, reluctantly, but if I surged them forward and into tough battles, they'd just be minced during the day by Netties. Not worth it, even for the KB.

As I look at this game now, the window of possibility now really allows the Allies to extend the gains of the early war and possibly surround large portions of the free IJA in the DEI. Most of Malaya is now under threat. Troops will land next to Singkawang in two days, and I'm planning to extend toward the PI along the islands to allow an LOC to resupply the troops there.

With all of this going on I also noticed some disbanded IJN ships in Rangoon. i sent in the 2E Wellingtons and B-25C from Chittagong, and they hit pay dirt. The Ashigara, the Furutaka, and CL Abukuma are all here. Each took a number of 500lb GP bombs, most of which didn't penetrate on the CAs, but the CL should be hurting. They did destroy some devices, and those both make these ships less battle worthy and will take longer to repair if they survive the month. (I don't think they will).

A quieter turn. The KB moves into Cam Ran Bay. A lot of fighters and bombers are moved to bases in Indochina. The USN CVs move back to Singers to replenish and reorganise.

Over Rangoon I kept the 2Es going, and in spite of some Rue's there they put a few more bombs on Furataka and probably sink the DMS here. Worth a few lost. It may mean he also has to consider sending more to CAP.

If so, it might even hole up in the DEI waiting for Manila & Bataan to be captured so it can get into the shipyard there.

On the 1st the Allied CVs sortie and catch a nice haul of transports and CL Oi. A few other ships are sunk by 2E USAAF bombers and the USN CV groups. The CVs and their surface escorts are in a great spot now on the North of Borneo if the KB moves.

A lot of bombers have moved to the big Indochina bases, and Ill bet there are more at Jolo or somewhere around the Sulu sea. I have to be careful, and also try to avoid unseen CAP traps. Most fighters are protecting the CVs.

The IJN sets some TFs in motion. I get the sense Lowpe is trying to confuse the issue a bit with his forces. A BB TF is located moving into the PI. A large fleeing transport/tanker TF (maybe also with wounded capital ships) is spotted near Puerto Princessa, and at least some of the damaged KB is on the move toward the Chinese coast after leaving Cam Ran Bay.

The USN misses a chance at Soryu, but nice to confirm she's there. The USN CVs will now move up and try to get in position for a run at either side of the equation with the option of refuelling at Manilla. There is about 40k fuel still there, which is excellent.

Strategically this is an important turn, as both Sambas (next to Singkawang) and Jesselton (on the NW tip of Borneo) are invaded and will hopefully be in Allied hands tomorrow. This will change the game completely. The IJN will not be able to keep the Allied from building and threatening to link Borneo to the PI and take out the rest of the DEI oil at Miri and Balikpapan. Although the CV action is fun, and the subs may still have a big impact, some little fast transports and xAKLs are the heroes of the day for getting these troops in to land. [&o]

This was an intense turn. Waves of strikes came after the Allied CVs, which I'd run to intercept the large TF of tankers and BBs. The CAP fought them all off and no hits were landed on the CVs or escorts. A lot of IJ planes downed on the day. This sends the Allies into the positive on the air loss balance sheet. [8D]

More importantly, in spite of strong IJN air strikes against landings at Smabs that took out a part of an armor brigade on three ships, Smbas and Jesselton are secured. [&o]

The CVs lost too many DBs late in the turn to a CAP trap over BBs at Naga. Too bad. I'll move to Manila to refuel and organise the groups.

The big TFs leaving Cam Ran did make it to Samah. Damn.

The 4th. A few more fireworks to mark the day.

The IJN brings some big AMCs into Kuantan with DD escorts. Not sure what's important enough there to risk those, but maybe he's trying to extricate the Wake CD guns?

LBA sorties from Singers and sinks at least two DDs and an AMC, probably a bit more all said and done. Worth losing a few more planes. It's good the KB is dented, as I won't be able to strike at anything soon. The CAP trap, whether intentional or not, is certainly at play on both sides of this game. As I think it's going to rapidly become a land war, that is okay for the Allies.

More units and support troops land at Sambas and Jesslton takes supply before a strike sinks the APD and others delivering it. It's okay. It's operational now.

CVs are replenished and will move out to see what's moving next turn from Manila.

This one was a bit frustrating. I sent the CVs out just for a semi-safe area in the South China Sea to recon the next move. Turns out they were exactly 7 hexes from Aparri where Lowpe had set a nasty CAP trap. Moved the BBs up from Naga and set 90 fighters there. Lost about 40 planes.

Vals also hit the TFs unloading on Borneo. Looks like the CVs will now cancel all strikes, protect the most important part of this operation, the Borneo landings, and retire to replenish.

Got a lot of good hits to oil at Miri and it's now at below pre-war production levels.

Got Zuikaku in the sights and hit!! ... but it was a dud Mk 14.

Sallys bomb my transfer and LR CAP base at Melak. I've been using that since Dec 41 and this is the first time it's been targeted. Still operational though with 3k supply.
