Another pretty basic question

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Another pretty basic question

Post by joblue »

What are some reasons that units sometimes wont move as commanded? Sometimes, it seems that a unit is in perfect health, but wont move...this brings me to another point. Is there any reference material out there for beginners. Alot of the info in the SPW@W Manual and on this forum assumes that youve been playing for 4 years,a nd with me thats simply not the case. I hate to take up space with my entry level questions, but I'm not sure where else to direct my questions.

Thanks is advance!!

Moonpie, you are NOT asking stupid questions, but you should read the manual, both SP3 and the SPWAW manuals. A lot of your questions will be answered there.

Units may not move for a number of reasons
(1) if command-control is turned on in the preferences and they are out of a 3 hex range of their leader, they won't move.
Turn it off and you won't have this problem.
(2) Unit may be set to defend instead of attack. Right click on the unit and check its status. If if it defend, click on the word and it will change to advance.
(3) if the unit is heavily suppressed, it will not move...Wild Bill

Go to: http://www.thegamers.net/links/index.asp for a feast of links. Especially see Pascal Ode's page for basics.

In general think overwatch, use terrain, recon, and know the capabilities of your systems and those of your enemy.

A personal note Re: C&C Options....

I had never used the C&C option before. Read the manual and started to tinker w/the stances...Objective points, ect. IMHO it really adds to the game and is worth the bit of time and reading to get it going right. I set a small scenario with some trucks heading to a depot, safe behind their own lines...that was their Obj pt (and last orders!) When they get there I load up some infantry and set off for the front. The "O" truck and two others respond (incontact w/"O" one truck does not...I had moved "O" out of it's contact range before I ordered it to move. Send the "O" back into range, wait til next turn and herd my errant truck back into the fold. Sound like a lot of work?. Actually no. It's war, confusion, orders and counter orders...It added to the level excitement as I rushed...but carefully...to the front. So if you're new to C&C as I am...give it a real try.

Wild Bill,

I made sure Command control is off (been off since the tutorial).

This is the beginning of the scenario and there is no supression.

I press A and it says ALL, but nobody moves.

I don't have the SP3 manual. Where would I get it?

Moonpie-
If you live in the US, go to any computer game store such as Electronics Boutique or others. Find an old copy of SP3. It can usually be found in the discount section or you can get an SSI ultimate wargame collection with sp3 in it. In both cases you wont pay much, but the manual will now be on the CD. If outside the US, try ordering from SSI direct or Chips and bits. They have a website and I'm sure they can get a copy.
Hope this helps.

Moonpie, the SP3 manual is also included in the download. Look for it. It is a PDF file.
