After Action Report

for January 9, 1944

Highlights for Today

1.) Operation Hello El Lobo has arrived at its destination 40 miles due west of Pescadores.

2.) For the third straight day heavy air and naval combat occurred within the vicinity of Formosa.

3.) El Lobo's Kamikaze's hit the Operation Hello El Lobo Fleet and damaged some transports; few allied troops were lost. Japanese Kamikaze's are indeed tricky: I had not known before today that Kamikazes can bounce off an Allied ship and hit the same Allied ship again; the Kamikazes inflicted 4 hits on DD Calwell, but only 3 Oscars were destroyed.

4.) El Lobo went after Allied DDs and hurt 12 of them

5.) El Lobo lost 104 aircraft today whereas the Allies only lost 5.

Japan Surrenders

January 14, 1944

According to recent communications with Evil El Lobo, Japan capitulates for the following five main reasons:

1.) Japan's "Magic Highway" in China had been severed by the Allies in China significantly decreasing the amount of supply flowing to Japan's Home Islands.

2.) Japanese forces were on the defense and in retreat in China.

3.) Upon the Allies managing to reinforce Formosa, Formosa had turned into a huge Prisoner of War camp for the Japanese forces on Formosa.

4.) Japan was out of reserves.

5.) Allied production capability would continue to be massive, leaving Japan with no hope for the future.

This war was much, much closer than it appears at first glance. Had either of the following two situations turned in favor of Japan, the Allies would have been the ones in big trouble:

1.) It was very close as to whether Chungking could suffer the siege of Japanese forces. The Allies barely managed to push north from Amoy, cut the "Magic Highway," and force Japan to divert aircraft and ground forces from Chungking to halt the Allied advance north toward Chungking and west toward Paoshan. The Allies simply won the footrace by mere inches. Had Chungking fell into Japanese hands, there was an excellent chance that Japanese forces would have swarmed out of Chungking and knocked the Allies back to Amoy and back to Burma.

2.) The Allies also barely managed to reinforce Formosa prior to Japan booting the Allies completely off of Formosa. Both El Lobo and I figured that if the Allies had not been able to reinforce Formosa for an additional two weeks, it would have been Japan that owned Formosa, not the Allies. Had Japan managed to boot the Allies off Formosa, it would have been extremely bloody for the Allies to supply Allied troops in China.

Accordingly, the advantage in this war could have quite easily gone either way until January 12, 1944 when the Allied reinforcement of Formosa secured Formosa for the Allies.

Although Captain Haggard and I have extensive experience playing war games going back as far as our college days together at the University of California at Santa Barbara during 1971 whereas El Lobo had absolutely zero experience with war games until this war between us. I faced a quick learner, a formidable foe; was challenged and nervous the entire time up to date the Allies secured Formosa.

El Lobo was under considerable and intense pressure from the Allies since the Allies captured Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam in the Marianas Islands in June of 1943. With the taking of the four southern Marianas Islands, the Allies opened a wide range of invasion opportunities. Japan had no way of knowing exactly where the Allies might strike next and they did not have the assets to adequately protect a multiple of key Allied invasion sites. Further, the Allies had the advantage of knowing exactly where they were heading from day one of the war and had prepared best they could to pursue their objectives. Yet, El Lobo met the Allied onslaught and threw everything Japan had left at Formosa and was damn near successful in driving the Allies into the sea. Japan was simply unable to rally quick enough to get the job done before the Allies reinforced Formosa.

Further, I believe that the element of "Surprise" was a huge factor in this war. El Lobo did not expect the Allies to invade Burma on October 15, 1942 with such a substantial force. Nor did El Lobo expect the Allies to invade the Marianas Islands in mid June of 1943 nor Formosa in mid September of 1943. I sincerely doubt many, if any, Japanese Emperor would have anticipated such early invasions at the Marianas Islands and Formosa, Pescadores, and Amoy China.

In conclusion, I want to express my honest and sincere gratitude to the developers of this game and to those of The War College that assisted the Allies in prosecuting the war. The developers provided the vehicle and those of you that attended The War College taught me how to drive the vehicle. Combined, all of you played a part in providing so many hours of fun for me.

Lastly, I want to thank El Lobo; a good friend and a deadly foe.

Attached below is the Strategic Map as of January 14, 1944.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Gentlemen of the War College,

I too wish to congratulate El Lobo for playing a great game. Every time I thought I had struck upon a vulnerability during our Sub vs. ASW campaigns, or during our prolonged small boat skirmishes, he would counter with tactics and quick responses that soon made me yearn for "the barn."

And how the hell did he elude my sub dragnet with his CVs—not once, not twice, but three times, all in the last weeks. I swear I had him covered; there was no way he could cruise his CV TFs through my cordons undetected. But he did, again and again and again.

I want to thank Admiral Bravo for allowing me to join the game.

As I knew he would, he does thing his way. But he always gave me complete freedom of operations with any assets he assigned me. I cringe when I think of the errors I made out of the chute, but he let me learn the ropes without critique.

And finally, Gentlemen, I thank you for your courteousness and your patience and most of all, your knowledge and expertise. Your input was incredibly valuable all through these past campaigns.

Bon voyage,

Hag

Congrats to all of you for a hard fought effort and a good AAR! I thought in some cases you dove too deep too fast without securing your rear areas, and you did lose more ships and aircraft because of that, but you definitely gained good strategic ground and forced the attrition the Japanese could not afford.

Captain Haggard-

El Lobo and I talked on the phone about his tactics to avoid your Submarine "nets".

He advised that he saw your submarines coming and that he would take off at "Fast" speed to avoid being trapped.

Also, we didn't sight his carriers move from the Bonin Islands until they showed at Naha because he sent his carriers due north to Japan, then skirted Japan southwest to the very southwestern tip of Japan and then moved them to Naha.

Lastly, he told me that one of his biggest fears in the war was your submarine operations.

I told you that he was a Sneaky Rat Bastard.

BB-

I had the same concerns as you that the Allies were striking too deep, too early, too many times with their rear lines completely unprotected. For long periods in the war on numerous occasions, Pearl Harbor had a garrison of under 100.

The Allies took several calculated risks and barely managed to skid past El Lobo by the skin of their nose.

tarkalak-

Thank you for your kind words.

It was important to both Captain Haggard and myself that our war with El Lobo would be fun for everyone.

To that end, we tried our best to make the war and our AAR interesting and fun.

Zulu-

Your name scares me. *chuckling*

Yes, the three of us are very good friends. I have known El Lobo since I was 12 or 13 years old (1963 or 1964) when he and my brother met and worked together as California State Firefighters. I have known Captain Haggard since 1971 when we met while attending college at the University of California at Santa Barabara.

We have had lots of fun through the many years, had fun with this war, and I look forward to many more good times with them in the future.

I'm not miffed at all. I had fun being patient, saving every toothbrush I could for the Allied Grand Strategy to drive deep into the heart of Japan at an early date.

Umm, what are the apex weapons?

Best Regards,

Hi Admiral Bravo and Captain Haggard.

I have started reading your AAR. Very well written, informative, and very funny. As to your dedication, your dad would have been proud. Great job.

It will take me a couple of days to completely read it but I thought I would drop by and congratulate you guys on your victory.

You had a very bold plan, the convictions to carry it through, and it paid-off. Your playing was superb and your tenacity was quite irritating. [:)] You were great opponents.

This was a fun game and I am sure that the fun will continue as we rehash it and what-if it for a long time to come.

This was a well deserved victory. Congratulations again and thanks for the good times.

Your Bud,

El Lobo

I understand the situation El lobo was put in, and capitulation- or opening of negotiations - were an understandable epilogue of those, but still Japan wasn't finished yet;

Your Bud,

El Lobo

El Lobo-

I hope you keep laughing all the way through reading Captain Haggard's and my AAR. I think I called you every low down dirty rotten name I could think of considering you were a pain in my ass the entire game.

*laughing hard*

Your pal,

adarbrauner-

I agree with you.

I don't believe the Allies sunk a single Japanese carrier.

Japan was by no means decimated and would have continued to bloody my nose.

However, as El Lobo put it to me, "The Writing was on the wall." To have continued the game would not have been anymore fun for either El Lobo or me.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Bif-

Thank you for the congratulations and all your help during the war.

I agree, Formosa was extremely close and could have gone either way.

To a rather large degree, this war turned because the Allies had "good luck" on their side.
