That happened to me first time out too, and then I figured out that the BBs need to stand off 12-20,000 yards while bombarding until the forts have enough guns knocked out to allow closer approach. One BB bombardment won't do much, you need to keep it up day after day so that disruption becomes disablement which becomes destruction of the guns and crews (support troops). A combination of bombardment and bombing works best. Destroying Truk's supply is also key to keeping the guns from being repaired or replaced.

This will work against the AI. It won't work against Loka or another grandmaster-level player. You will meet the KB several times if you do this tactic with bombardment BBs. You have to get in, get unloaded, get away.
I know, but if KB has been eliminated and you can suppress the airfields, and you have enough supply nearby, and a re-arm base ... I could go on but the point was that if you have the conditions available to so what I said, you can eventually destroy the fort. But most of the time it is better to do what the Allies did IRL and suppress/bypass.
BTW, Guam does not have a naval fort so it and Tinian are the starting points for a Marianas campaign (although there may be CD units there). From those two islands you can bomb the heck out of Saipan.

By mid-44 the Japanese have some good base forces and CD gun units that usually get stacked up in the Marianas, so no base is without a deterrent. I agree with Bull that in my experience those quick in and out invasions are most beneficial to the Allies. Jocke hit me with a few that I was in position to react to but he was gone within two turns, and I whiffed completely.

That Truk defense was amazing given the very few units present. I believe the restricted waters made the guns that much more effective (and mines would be more effective too).

Moose—

I knew a guy that served on Stonewall... I met him when he was working as an electrician in the Honolulu yards, he had just been, uh... "released"...

He was communications, not sure of his rating, E-5.

He served on SJ in '67?? Too early for your tour?

Yes. I was early 80s.

The photo was taken during Demonstration and Shakedown Ops (DASO) after we had Trident C-4 missiles and fire control back-fitted into our weapons system. Patrick AFB/Port Canaveral was the locus for all ten boats' DASOs that got the C-4. The range ship lived there as well. After the DASO we home-ported at Kings Bay, which was still under construction. Lived in Charleston, bused down for refit.

The Blue crew got to shoot the bird during their DASO. I have a picture.

Alright, the first turn is away and back. Not much to report, as most of the intense air battles and the landings at Oosthaven were cancelled as I get my feet on the ground. The base is taken there, so I'll back off and slowly insert base forces and engineers using low stakes landing craft. I've got a CAP of around 500 planes at Batavia now, so as the last of the APA unload it should be protected against whatever comes.

The major action of the day occurred at the end of the replay as an Indian division crossed into Rangoon. I had thought it would go safely, as the hexside is in Allied hands, but the VP ratio isn't sufficient, so scratch one division. [:(]

My bad, as Bullwinkle warned me. I'll now try to evacuate while appearing to still reinforce. We'll see, but this could be iffy to hold before the Japanese get enough supply to strike again. At least the combat probably went through some for them.

Feels good to get going. Only about half of my recon shows anything useful, so I'll just leave it all going for another day on the same locations. I need to know what is where fast.

Erik, I really admire you for taking on yet another game. 3 games vs 3 very notable and formidable opponents ! After a few months, it would be interesting to hear your impressions of each of them. Is Lokasenna going to be doing a companion AAR ?

It's daunting but a lot of fun. I feel like each game and each opponent will bring such different challenges. I'm curious to see how Loka handles late game Japan from a position of strength and with a Scen 2 OOB. It's going to be an uphill slog, and I have to say looking at what Bullwinkle went through at Truk and elsewhere, I'm not sure I would have made it this far if I'd been playing from the beginning. It'll be a great learning tool for me since I will have certain pressure to get things done and carry on what was started, but also some leeway in that it will take some time to learn my opponent's tendencies, style, and (hopefully) find some chinks in the armor.

It is a monster getting a handle on this game! The turn went okay, but I am still feeling like I can't act on much as recon is still very sketchy, the KB has gone dark, and my SIGINT is only now just starting to begin revealing what's happening behind the surface. I have some changes to preps beginning, some continuations of Bullwinkle's plans to get going, and lots of logistics to master. I'm still finding numerous TFs out there I didn't know existed! [X(]

This turn the Japanese were not out of supply at Rangoon and did attack to try and seal the deal. Luckily we just got a 1:1, barely.

I'm now in the middle of bringing units together, sending more air support and engineers to recently captured bases, etc. I'd love to exploit the door Bullwinkle opened on the coast of Borneo NW of Tarakan. These bases need to be built though, and once they are, can both inhibit Japanese use of Miri/Brunei and also support further invasions at Sandakan and around toward Kudat. I'll post some maps soon.

Ok. Back to this monster. Now that my other AARs are caught up and there is no turn in the box I can do an update on this game.

It's still been really fun to get it going and get my fingers on all of these tools for the Allies in late game. I've pulled back the aggression across the board, but I will choose to hit a few isolated things every turn as I prepare for larger objectives. I want to see what his reactions are like and how he plays before putting the foot on the gas here.

I noticed the Japanese had fighters based at Benkolen, off the rail network. Only 45 were listed by recon, and at risk of having him LR CAP I decided to go for it. I figured the oil at Palembang would keep most other groups there, and I was right this time. About 70 B-24s crushed the base, likely closing it down and bagged a good 50-60 planes on the ground. Nothing major, but it's a good start.

I set B-29s to hit Djambi at night where there was no resistance. They took around 50 oil points off the total without a loss.

The Libs also bombed undefended Cocos Island (also showing no flak during the replay, which tells me there might not be supply out there) and Yolo, where the Allies are stuck in an equal fight with Japanese units.

I sacrificed a few Avengers to show what the CAP settings are like at Palembang, and found something interesting. he's got a low CAP (12k-10k-8k-5k) but with max altitude cover of 38k by Frank Ki-84r. That should perform strangely given that the Franks won't have time to dive on low strikes, and max altitude sweeps will hit the Franks and not necessarily all dive to low altitude.

I have another sweeping opportunity for the next turn though. The KB is at Sinkep Island, and if it stays it'll have to fend off 100 or so of the best sweepers available from Batavia next turn. This should also tell me what he uses as CV CAP and hopefully whittle it down a bit (and make him head back for replacements).

Ok. So this has been a long time coming. We’ve been slowly progressing in this game and I now have a few moments to catch things up. I did want to give a few turns to see more of the position and Loka’s style before getting deep into what is happening in game.

After a good look around with recon and naval search as well as the plentiful Allied subs, I’ve found out some interesting things. The Allied position is not bad, the time pressure though does make it feel urgent. I’ve been isolating the most pressing strategic goals and then allocating the most important forces on map to achieving those I can affect now.

Firstly, Bullwinkle’s moves in the DEI have given the Allies a great shot at the oil. I’ve been night bombing all targets in range with some good preliminary success. Most fighters are allocated to defence and maintaining security around airfields and ports where operations are under way.

I’ve tested a few spots with sweeps, but with only small forces and mixed results.

On the 3rd Liberators down a lot of IJAAF day fighters trying to protect the oil at night. They also got a few hits on the oil. Miri was also attacked with some hits to oil, and fighters swept Sinkep next to the KB patrol position. These were good P-51D and P-38L with some Corsairs, and essentially got 1:1, but downed about 35 KB planes and hopefully pilots. A good warning shot! [:)]

The major news of the day is that the majority of Allied forces escape Rangoon, and only two rearguard divisions get messed up by a Japanese DA. After the turn Loka sent a note saying "That wasn't supposed to happen," and he didn't bother to clarify if he meant the Rangoon force escaping or the KB sweeps.

Here is a shot of Borneo. A good amount of troops at Miri and Brunei, and some oil left there, but it should be easy to work down even just with night bombing from Balikpapan and Soerbaja. I'll begin to assemble forces to keep moving around the NW corner as Bull had several units already planning and that is relatively low risk.

The South side I'll just leave and plan to clean up later, once they're nice and trapped by later moves.

The 4th brings a lot of back and forth. The Japanese hit Ledo and knock out some transport. Our forces hit a bunch of airfields across the CBI area, but don't get much on the ground. They do get some effective sweeps.

Subs continue to get great sightings and some good attacks as well, hitting a big AO near Borneo today. The real info though is a sighting of another KB near the Marianas. So it's split. This is a huge piece of info and makes a lot of choices start to come together. All subs in the area will aim to converge on this position nd the predicted path (toward the HI) of the KB.

Medan and Djmbi are hit by the B-29s and some oil hits achieved. Our first taste of the Irving NF occurs at Medan. They're good enough to knock out only 1 B-29 for about 4 losses of their own.

Burma looks impenetrable. The coasts down to Singers are really well protected as well. My ideas though are veering toward a skirting of the edge of the PI, neglecting Manila completely, and aiming quickly for the Chinese coastline. I have a lot of work to do to get forces in place, and get the recon figured out so I know how much I'd need to bring.

Raids on Palembang and Medan met with resistance but after cutting through did major damage to the oil. I'll just keep these plugging away, and I would bet after a month there will be negligible oil left for the Japanese in the DEI. These strikes also decimated the daylight fighters flying night CAP here.

Another set of strikes hit Bangkok airfields. Not many altogether, but since the airfield is packed they did significant damage. This highlights my issues with night bombing airfields in game. This was only three groups of B-24s and took out about 35 planes at night on the ground.

B-29s also hit Taihoku, which had no CAP up, and started a good 60k+ fires. That should take out some of the useful oil and resources there.

I tried a DA with the East African Brigade on Sinabang, but failed badly to break through the very small Japanese garrison. I'll fly some extra supply in, look for a better commander, and do some bombing here. It'd be nice to have this base as another pressure point the Japanese have to worry about in the area and to support the troops now lodged and stuck at Sabang, nearby.

The KB seems to be doing something over in the Marianas. Either adding or retrieving troops. Guam is well stacked, but Saipan and the others don['t seem to have nearly as much. I also notice the Northern islands including Pagan are hardly defended. I think I'll aim to move up to the dots here and build them to cut off the Marianas a bit. This'll give excellent search and recon coverage of Central Pacific movements and some looks at the Home Islands as well.

Any Japanese player worth his salt will change that.

Edit: Belay that. I read "naval fort" as CD....

But, a CD unit is a definite need.

A beginning ...

... this is the first air strike in this game on the Home Islands since Bullwinkle's early moves in 42. It doesn't do much, really, but it gains some strat bombing VPs and sets a tone, hopefully. I will strike at anything useful to Japan's economy, at any time, from anywhere I can reach it.

Another good moment on the 6th. The Akagi fills up the periscope lens on Golet as the KB is tracked by now up to 20 subs racing in from all directions. This won't keep the former BC out of action for long, but could take her to the yards at a very critical time (or leave her running on with some compromising damage). No extra messages on this one.

Golet though gains some exp and gets away with very little damage into the deep waters of the Philippine Sea. [:)]

On the 6th the night bombing continues with heavy losses to the Japanese day fighters protecting Palembang, and still some good destruction from the B-29s and other 4Es striking there. I'll post some comparative numbers soon from before and after. From experience I know how critical the oil can be, but I of course have no idea how much Loka has stored away. It's been a hard fought game, so maybe he's used a lot keeping the KB going for these past three years.

All of the RN subs transit the straits past Singapore, and as they go there have been some good catches. Today the Stratagem puts two fish into a TK, but suffers a good DC strike in return. She'll likely be able to limp to Java though to get patched up.

I've been preparing Jolo and a few other deadlocked bases for some ground battles, and today launched the first. Just one regiment of Shermans trying the Japanese defenders there. Looks like they don't have many anti-tank guns, so only damage to the IJA. I'll keep pecking away and picking my spots here.

I'll pst some pics of current plans soon.

Almost all of the Japanese fighters lost here are downed against 4Es at night over Palembang. The B-24s downed were at Medan, fighting the Irving NF there. Medan is down to only 75 (150) or so, so I'll keep pounding at Palembang, Djambi and Miri and switch back there later.

RE: Meridian to Majestic: Lokasenna (J) vs obvert (A) (Bullwinkle's from 7/41-11/44)

Where was this launched from? I despaired of ever getting close enough to do what you just did. Well done.

Good job (below) on Pbang. I tried, but never could get past the fighters.

Jolo, when I left it, was a backwater, but too much already invested to just withdraw. He has a lot there, but also a lot to lose. Eventually. At the end of my time I was constantly facing the decision to go in regardless, or waste the prep time I'd already paid. I think I got into some infinite loops. One of the hardest things to do as the Allies is leave a solid base in your back-areas. But against a player like Lokasenna there aren't any easy ones either.
