paratroops vanished

Post by MrBlizzard »

Battleground Italy under last beta 1.02.15

T53. I ordered an airdrop simultaneous to an amphibious assault in northern Italy.

Next turn my paratroops have disappeared, I find them in the list of destroyed units.
But I can't find any battle in which they were destroyed, my opponenet said I didn't see anything about them too.
Should I find a report anywhere?
thanks

I'd suspect they scattered and destroyed - could they have displaced either into the sea (a favourite trick) or onto a strong land unit?

In general try not to do airdrops with units smaller than a division if there is any risk as they are vulnerable.

If I recall, displacing into the sea generates no report because there is no battle as such.

Thanks Loki
They should have dropped on the same hex of the amphibious landing, so a coastal hex. Maybe they finished in the adriatic sea.
Why they can drop into the sea? Is it for my error in selecting the hex or for an unlucky dice roll ?

its bad luck.

Basically, esp regimental drops, are vulnerable to being moved one hex off target, so if your target is the coastal hex then they can end in the sea

I've sometimes had this displacement work in my favour (ie they moved somewhere safe) but it mostly just leads to a lost unit. The only benefit is you generate something like 3 interdiction in the target hex.

In a vs AI game you see the displacement move as you can see all the turn resolution, if I recall in PBEM/Server games you don't. In effect the allied player never sees the landing sequence and the axis player won't see a displacement.

For non-divisional drops there is a chance that the unit will not land on the intended hex...but instead land on an adjacent hex.

If that hex is water...then the unit is destroyed.

If you want an historical reason...read about the allied paradrops on Sicily. The 82nd airborne in particular.

It is usually best to drop the paratroopers as a division. A division does not drift....and lays down more interdiction in the adjacent hexes it lands in.

Thanks both for usufull explanation; I've got behind a sequence of failed regimentals drops. Hopefully it will go better in future [:D]
