Sea Transport?

Post by 76mm »

I'm re-reading the manual again, and in several places it refers to embarking/disembarking units from ships, etc.

But as far as I can tell, there aren't any transport ships or landing craft in the game. Is sea transport possible? If so, I guess units are embarked on combat ships? There is an "RL Ship" but I don't know what that is...

Sea transport capacity for each side is set by event.

Edit: Same for air and rail transport capacity.

Helicopter lift, however, is provided by lift units.

There is no specific ship unit for you to embark your LCU's on. It's abstracted so when you embark the unit on a rail or in a port the icon will change to
show that it's now embarked and then you can move it while it's in that mode. Disembarkation is next turn.

OK, I understand now that sea transport is abstracted. But then I don't understand something else: in Section 11.4 of the manual (p 73), it says that "Units conducting seaborne movement are subject to interdiction attacks by in-range air units...and by naval/coastal guns units within gunnery range of the movement.

How does the game determine which units being abstractly transported by sea are "in range" of air interdiction or naval/coastal guns?

It's my understanding that during the inter-turn processing the hexes covered by the aircraft and arty are calculated and saved somehow so that during the game the hexes can be checked for "conditions" that apply and the attack can be processed according to those "conditions". There's a series of flags that can be set for each hex and the flags determine what happens next, etc. That's the theory as I understand it. I could be wrong. I haven't had a bowel movement for quite a while so I may be full of crap.

Their sea lift is abstracted, not their movement. Once embarked, such units actually move across the sea.

If you set via editor that one scenario have 1000Tn as sea transport, If you move your units into a hex with a port, you can embark those units until you reach 1000tn, then you can move this units as ships into the sea, and they are subject to interdiction attacks.

Thanks, this is what I was missing, I thought that they just moved to/from ports.
