Question for Viking02

Post by Vathailos »

And feel free to hold off on answering this until this latest battle's over but here goes:

I noticed in our first battle that you're quite fond of AT guns, as a matter of fact, it seems as though you rush them forward into a reverse slope as fast as you can, then "creep" them forward. They're no doubt effective. I was just wondering what percentage of your force they tend to make up?

Do you typically include a good number of AT guns in most of your battles? Or typically only against countries with superior armor?

I like the "V" deployment technique btw very much. Two smaller guns slightly forward of a larger gun. The larger gun's range tweaked down to below theirs.

Like I said, I don't want you to tip your hand at all, so if and when you can answer it, I'll appreciate it!! :D

Dependng on who I am playing varies how much I buy.

5-10 % of my force is usually AT guns, the US has to use AT gun against the Germans IMO.

Now if I am playing against the Russian's it's tricky I never have found a good balance in what type and how mant AT guns to buy. I always try to buy some small AT guns. The two best players at using small AT guns, that I have played is Gary and Brutto Bob. They use them differently Brutto Bob moves them around allot and I can never figure out what Gary is doing ( thats why he usually beats me ) but he always has them where they will hurt you.

Try to use the smallest amount of firepower needed, no sence taking out a SU-57 with a 88mm when a 28MM will do the job have more shots and stay hidden.

If you are the Brits, they have the all powerful 17lb AT gun, combine those with 2lb AT and you have a very nasty team.

My opinion, other will vary. My games are becoming more difficult so I think I am giving away to much of my tactics

It's V2's GD flamethrowers that are giving me fits! First it was the Japs and now it's the Italians.:(

RB is currently beating up my Italians in a H2H game, I think the RB's Brits have suffered major infantry casualties but I don't think I have killed one tank :(

in my case these are the british wasp flamers. they are too effective in the game it seems.... perhaps making in future games agreements about them as for arty + air.

Frank, if you think the Wasp is bad then you better not ever face the Jap engineer tanks. That's a double barrelled threat for sure.

I think they're alright. They are just a very deadly tool in the hands of someone who knows how to use them (i.e. V2). I suck at their use, so they aren't much of threat in my hands.

The keyword here being Italians. ;)

Not even V2 has a fair chance using them....

I disagree. V2 kicks butt no matter what country he's playing. He's just too **** patient. He knows I can't stand to sit still for long and he just waits for me to move into his well laid killing zones.

Thats true rbrunsman.
In my first two games (My first two ever PBEM games!) I was too hasty and I wanted to get there, and do that, take some names and kick some butt.

I've seen that if your oppenent is very patient (IE V2) you have to counter with patience in attacking as well.
In all my other games I would move my troops as far as they could each turn. Which resulted in me losing many many men.

But this 3rd game I've learned how to use cover, and to move slowlllllllllyyyyy, so slow it hardly looks like I'm attacking him.
(Well in some places its more like hes attacking me, but you get the picture.)

So far I think I'm actully winning!!  And this being my 3rd game EVER vs a human. And esp. vs someone like V2.

He never really said a word about what to do, and what units I should use. But just kicking the crap out of me, I've learned for myself what units work, and which don't.
Which is the best way to learn IMHO instead of asking questions. But questions are still a good way to find out things. Like how Gun Teams actully CANNOT carry ammo.

I saw his use of smoke (Which I still forget to use myself  ) and how he just moves his troops.(When I can see them ;) )

When I find a kill box with no way around. Smoke it, or bomb it to hell. V2 has shown me why I should love smoke. He use's it so darn much! Smoke is the best thing ever invented, besides rocket's that is. :D

Just watch, learn, and take notes is all you ever need to do when playing. Learn from your mistakes, find out what you did wrong, why it still went wrong when you tryed to fix it, and learn how to prevent it the next time it happens.

Sorry if it looks like I'm rambleing. Its 11:30 PM and I'm just shouting from atop my soap box. Most of you guys already know this stuff. :P

Anyway I'll get down now.

it depends if you want a bit reality in the play. flametanks were special weapons and not very common in normal operations and formations used by engineer units against forts and other FIXED positions. in this game they are more a ( in the hands of a player who knows how to use them ) kill everything weapon in 2 hex range. even if they miss, the targeted troops or vehicles get so much suppression and are most unlikely to rally.

..... but as i said before to viking i don´t complain about that mostly.

in earlier game i very rarely used much smoke. i think it takes away some of the game speed so to speak. but if smoke is used that much against yourself you must adapt your tactics....

i´m sometimes to hasty or got frustrated in games in which it seems i have too much bad luck ( for example stuck vehicles or weapon breakdowns ). i think viking you will have noticed that i have not moved the one tiger from the hill. i´m shure you have killed that one now. i moved the pz.IV sitting there back in the woods and it got immobilized. the same happended to some more vehicles like a brummbär the turn before. i was so angry that i just hit "end turn" and forgot to move the tiger back :(
