Ah yes, the Flying Fish class of CAs.

Seriously though, a saved game from just before the search phase is needed.

Actually you don't. What the game is asking you is if you would like to use your 2 SP's to either increase the USA AA by 1 or decrease the Japanese AA by 1. You can choose to do either or neither. Just click the ok button at the bottom of the form to advance to the air to air forms.

Word or advice, which I've learned the hard way. MWiF 2.8.4 doesn't handle air-to-air with carriers very well and will often not let you get through the phase. I've found the most stable version for fighting these battles is version 2.7.0. If you're using a higher version and would like to know how to easily swap between the two to fight these types of battle just let me know and I'll post how I do it.

Sure about that? Why aren't the buttons for that enabled?

Not sure. But, if you click the "ok" button at the bottom it should allow you to proceed to the air-to-air form. It's possible that this form is hidden and will hopefully show up after he click the ok button. Of course, having the game file would remove all doubt. [:)]

But if the player desires to upshift or downshift the air-to-air column, this appears to be the only opportunity to do so. But in lieu of a saved game, picking one of those (or not) and clicking on 'OK' is certainly worth a try.

Also I wonder what the game would do if you tried to rearrange the order of the "planes".

I don't have 2.7.1 but I do have 2.7.4. I didn't have a problem. I set die rolls for the search and got three 3 SP's for the USN. A form similar to the one you posted popped up. I hit ok without increasing or decreasing any of the AA, but I could have if I wanted. After I hit ok I was taken to the air-to-air battle form where you can arrange the order of your planes and fight the air to air battle.

My mistake - maybe that is a standard layout for that point of the game. But how could or would you increase/decrease AA (Anti-air) when the only buttons lit up are for Air-to-air?

No problem ... it's just that I've gone through this entire sequence (no exaggeration) at least 50 times in the last 3 to 4 weeks and it's imprinted on my being. [:D]

The increase/decrease anti-air buttons are enabled, if you have 2 more surprise points left, after the conclusion of all rounds of the air-to-air battle.

Maybe we just have a failure to communicate. I'm referring to the above quote and I'm assuming it refers to the picture in posts 1, 3 and 8.

Oh, my bad. The first part of your quote of me should read, "I hit ok without increasing or decreasing any of the air-to-air ... ".

I don't see any bugs here.

Air-to-air combat is before Anti-aircraft fire, so the program first asks about using surprise points for air-to-air combat. If there are bombers that get through the air-to-air combat, and there are still surprise points available, the program will ask about using surprise points to change AA fire 'odds'.

The Spend Surprise Points form can appear a half dozen times (or more): Avoid Combat, Choose Combat Type, Air-to-air Odds, Anti-aircraft Fire Effectiveness, Change Naval Combat Column, and Choose Target. For Submarine Combat, it can appear a couple extra times.
