I understand that dividing land units is proposed for future editions or follow on game. This gives us a way other than using transport to break units into smaller pieces.
If so, I hope there is flexibility. If it is a fixed fraction, then I propose using 1/3 as that is the most widely used number, i.e., 3 brigades in a division, 3 battalions in a brigade, etc.
As I know there are exceptions, what I really would like is either 1/4. 1/3 or 1/2. I would propose using a menu similar to task force formation. On the left side would be allowable denominators and on the right would be toggle switches for each element of the unit. So you could form a Battalion Combat Team (BCT) from a RCT by selecting 1/3, then chose not to include certain weapons such as 155mm. Support forces should have three options--not include, equal include or fully support. The latter choice would allow for totally standalone subunits.
This approach would also allow for spinning of FA units if desired.
I would also change the automatic recombine and make this a toggle. Perhaps the rule for combining should be if the subunits have the same mission then they combine, otherwise not. My definition of same mission would be doing same action, i.e., if one subunit is set to march and other to defend, then they are not doing the same mission. Likewise, if one subunit is being moved (air or sea) then that is a different mission.
