I'm finally starting to see the supply levels rise enough for operations to continue in the deep south. I want to push up against the river to the east if possible.

Here's a view of the front lines from Bryansk down to Kharkov which encompasses the bulge in the lines and is a study in depth of what's possible combined with the idea that the SWO is either on already or will begin next turn or at least soon. What to do? I think I'll advance as far as supply will allow or until I find a Soviet unit whichever occurs first.

Larry, you continue to don't respect some incentive.
Bryansk seem a bit south for engineers from AGN
and support units (AT, AA & Art) are not allowed to open the front [:D]

Here's a view of the Leningrad area currently. I'm still fighting for a path to the city and the fighting is every turn now. The Soviets keep moving units forward and I keep attacking them. I'm letting the arty do most of the work so as not to tax the LCU's too much. I need them to defend when they aren't attacking.

Here's Kharkov currently and as you can see I'm trying to surround the simple group of Soviet units as I squeeze them into a smaller group. There's Soviet units trying to come to their rescue and I'm having to deal with them simultaneously. Supply is good in this area, thank goodness, and progress is about to be made. I may be mopping up this group for a while.

Here's a look at Sevastopol as it looks now. I've made some progress on the SE corner mainly because the Soviets retreated in front of me. Now that the attacking has started I've learned to let the arty do most of the work and I'm slowly making progress on the north edge. I've been attacking the Soviet ships and have sank the two BB's and now there's just a CA and some DD's left. They are getting in the way of my attack, showing up on the combat results list as a partisipant. The Soviet ships still have some small amount of CAP from the Soviet fighters in the area and my Stukas are having a hard time getting at the ships and the losses are high so far. I don't think I'm going to be able to make the 04Dec41 deadlline for the Bulgarian release. D'oh. We'll see.

Why are you so far off Moskov Larry? It's not your main objective?
Also why have you decided to push so far on the far south front? What was that you wanted to achieve with that?

I'm curious, have no clue what you're up to ;)

Hey there Chris dude....long time no hear from. Thanks for following this AAR so closely....shows a genuine interest. Um...why am I so far off Moskov...um...I didn't do much in the way of attacking during the month of November in order to get ready for the SWO which is due to start either next turn or at least soon. Their shock will jump up to 120 for 10 turns and my shock will decrease to 70 for 5 turns, I think those are the numbers. I can't check right now because I'm right in the middle of my PAW game with Rob. I would get the numbers from the scenario briefing in any case. I've been pushed backward by the Soviets before and I'd like to avoid that this time.

I was trying to push up to the next major river so I could use it defensively during the SWO but it looks like I didn't achieve getting to the next river. I'll have to try to defend approx. where they are right now. Although during this past Soviet turn my Hungarians decided they had had enough and started to retreat from combat, a lot of them, and there's no reserve so I'm thinking that the Soviets are going to get a kick out of making a hole in MY lines for a change. I'll have to scramble to see if I can't plug the hole(s).

Sorry, I didn't mean to exclude you guys from my loop. I'll put together some kind of strategy thing to explain what's going on right now.

Here's the northern front lines and I'm trying to push the Soviets up against the river and I want to grab Leningrad and I'm going to rail in some RR arty to help with that. I've got a Soviet breakthrough to deal with and I'm pretty sure I can plug that hole and contain the berserker. This area has lots of good supply and I'm expecting a lot from these people.

Here's the front lines a little further south and the idea in this area is just to press to the east. It's a sort of broad-front approach to just push the Soviets east. A coordinated front that leaves no gaps in the lines. I'm always looking for weak spots but I don't have the manpower to take advantage of any opportunities to roll up their lines for instance. I'm on the verge of being outnummbered in this area.

Here's the front lines at a lattitude just south of Moscow. It's more of the same actually, a broad-front approach to advancing to the east. Contain the Soviets and push them east.

Here's what it looks like north of Kharkov. The Axis forces haven't really moved into that area yet because the supply level won't support operations. I'm waiting for a better supply level.

The big idea in the far south was to push up to the river bank and defend from there during the SWO but we didn't have the juice to make that happen and we're stuck out in the middle with very little cover and I'm wondering if I should fall back or whet. I need a better place to defend.

That southern-east river defence plan seems a tad risky. You'd expose your flank to the enemy. And as far as I know during a winter the river can be fairly easy crossed.

You are already have a big gap in you lines and some of the flanks "protected" by Hungarians. Looking at the picture I'd say perform everyone's maneuver of moving back to some previously chosen defensive location ;)

Yeah, I think I need to pull back too. The supply would be better further to the west and I could get better organized during the transition. I'll see what I can do.

Here's the northern front lines and you can see that I've got RR arty supporting the attack(s) and I've been gaining hexes in the recent past and I'm hoping to be adjacent to the city soon. Then maybe one mighty push will gain the city proper.

I've had a good look at Sevastopol and I have determined that I'm not going to be able to make the 04Dec41 deadline to grab the port in return for the use of the Bulgarians. So it looks like I'm not going to get the Bulgarians for this game. D'oh. I'm not sure I want to play this game w/o the Bulgarians. This is just about the best attempt I've made so far but it's not good enough. I'm going to restart and try it again.

I am shocked that you are withdrawing from the game because you will not get the Bulgarians. The challenge was for you to play the scenario to 1943 in order to qualify for the War Gamer of the Year Award. I have to withdraw my nomination for you now. [&:]
