Another French surrender bug

Post by elxaime »

There seems to be a bug in the French surrender mechanics. I was in a PBEM where the Axis had destroyed the French forces, but held off taking Paris itself for a turn (almost all the rest of France was taken and there was no French unit in Paris). Next turn, France surrendered, due I suppose to conditions being met for surrender (such as low national morale) even if Paris was not yet Axis occupied. But there were no messages creating any of the territories of Algeria, Tunisia or Syria. They all now just showed as Axis occupied. The game was using Crispy's FWII 17.0 version mod, but he has confirmed he did not make any changes to the base game affecting something like this. So must be an unforeseen outcome. My understanding is that the defeat of France is supposed to present the Axis with a choice: a) create Vichy or b) fight on to take everything by force, including the French colonies. I don't believe it is a design outcome for Paris to be left unoccupied so that there is no Vichy decision and then France surrenders with everything becoming Axis. Appreciate your taking a look at this. It is probably not something that happens unless the Axis intentionally avoids taking Paris while occupying and destroying everything else in metropolitan France. So I'd imagine it otherwise doesn't occur. I believe even if Paris is not occupied, France can surrender, but even in that case the Vichy decision would fire. Thanks.

Interestingly, historically Paris was not in fact conquered in combat, but was declared an open city and entered more or less without fighting. In the game, Paris almost always is the scene of bitter fighting, which I assume is just a necessary fudge to allow a clear resolution.

Hi Elxaime,

I can't repeat this with the default campaign, so it's hard for me to say what might have happened with this particular mod. Perhaps the settings are incorrect or the scripts were not properly recompiled within this mod?

What my opponent suggested is that the surrender in this case occurred as a result of low French national morale, achieved without taking Paris. This supposedly will make France surrender and, if you don't take Paris, Vichy is not created and all French territories go Axis. So perhaps there is an issue where France can so low enough in NM to surrender but for some reason this doesn't trigger the Vichy choices.

Hi Elxaime,

The normal function of the surrender event we have in place will handle a national morale surrender as well as when you capture Paris, my test was with a national morale surrender without capturing Paris and the Vichy decision appeared as it should have, which makes me wonder if perhaps the event is incorrect in the mod or the event hasn't been properly compiled etc.

My test can also be repeated on your end with the default campaign to confirm by just waiting to see what happens after France reaches 0 NM without taking Paris.

Hope this helps,
Hubert
