À la guerre comme à la guerre - ITAKLinus (J) vs Ste_peterpan (A)

Post by ITAKLinus »

Hello everybody

I am a 25yold guy from Italy who discovered matrix world at the end of this February, coming from HOI3 games.

Then I had started a PBEM against a very experienced Italian player who left me at 1st of August 1942 after I was on the verge of conquering the whole China (basically he had only Chungking and a couple of bases in the mountains).
My adversary told that I was cheating (?!) and exploiting the fact that ground warfare is broken and some on the Italian forum even agreed to the fact that going for “China First” was an exploit.
Game ended with his quit.

After that horrible and coward quit I have restarted a PBEM against another Italian experienced player who is currently finishing another PBEM (they're at the beginning of 1945 if I recall well).

I will give some more details later in the thread, however we are currently at something like 25th of March and here is the general situation:

I decided to skip Philippines invasion and P.H. as well. I have bombed Manila killing 21-23 out of 27 subs over there. Then I have covered landings in Mersing on 8th Dec. Troops originally headed toward Philippines were diverged to assist Singapore's siege and other operations.

Singapore fell on the 5th of January. In late December I completed the conquest of Borneo (except Tarakan which I conquered only few turns ago) and Salomons. I have also landed in Java, taking the southern half of the island and slaughtering Soerbaja's defenders.

In January I have conquered the whole Sumatra and organized the next step.

Luzon? Nope.
Burma? Not at all.

Yeah, I landed in Diamond Harbour directly, skipping the whole Burma. It has been a massacre. I trashed every allied unit in the zone and the remnants fought fiercely inside Calcutta for days against 5 Japanese divisions. At the beginning of March, after 1 month of harsh fightings, I decided for a more indirect approach to the city.

In the meanwhile I sunk BB Pennsylvania near Kwajalein with 3 sub torpedoes and put another 2 on CV Enterprise. PoW and Repulse were at that time already sleeping in the Ocean (got them on 7th Dec).

Royal Navy tried to contrast me in the Indian Ocean. It has been quite funny. CVL Hermes sunk. CV Indomitable got 50 bombs (250Kg and 800Kg) in 3 days, guess she's gone. BB Royal Sovereign did even better, gathering almost 70 bombs in one week period (again, 250Kg and 800Kg). Both were in Madras after suffering some damage at sea (other bombs from my CVs).

Last week I had sunk other 2 CLs in the zone, thanks to my DDs and their long lances.

Let's return to the important stuff.
Beginning of March.

I begun the encirclement of Calcutta and I am currently near to accomplish it. In the meanwhile I landed 3 divisions and various Independent Brigades in Burma, finding everything near abandoned. Got Rangoon at the first deliberate and I am in the process of killing the 12 units that were in the city (currently 10).

I am also attacking the central part of Burma (Magwe and co) that is semi-desert: just few Base Forces and Air Support units. Some spare Burmanese battalions.

2 divisions landed in Chittagong, trashing the place and its defenders. I have pushed 6 allied units from there to Burma. Yeah, pushed them back in the meatgrinder: now they're sitting east of Akyab, which I own. Spare SNLF landed in Chittagong conquered Dacca, Imphal and other nice bases. The 2 divisions are re-embarking to fight near Calcutta.

My enemy tried to throw everything he has in the zone. Australian reinforcements (actually a couple of divisions splitted into Brigades) got raped north of Calcutta while trying to relieve the siege. British 18th Division is holding the last hex conneting Calcutta to the rest of the world, a couple of Jap division are fighting in that base.

Last week I have landed Guards Mixed Brigade and 1 infantry division in Mindanao. Guess I will attack Luzon on June/July. And completed the conquest of Java (still had to take Batavia).

China is quite important to me and I have launched a massive offensive in the NORTH, taking Sian and I am now marching toward Lanchow. Many Chinese died and are routing everywhere. I also managed somehow to keep Ichang for months thanks to massive LB bombings and ARM came there from Hankow&co. Some days ago the Chinese made the last effort to conquer the base. Well, they lost 50,000 men in a three-day battle and my counterattack repelled them.

Sooner or later I will understand how to attach images and I will add something more specific.

I am waiting for "Sunday 23rd of March 1942 - TURN 107"

Dunno if I managed to attach the base situation at 15th of March. I think I have not been able

So far I lost 1xCA and 9xDD (7 in a 1-week-long battle in front of Diamond Harbour, 1 on 7th Dec near Mersing due to Repulse&PoW and 2 because of mines)

I'll be back soon!

Little note:

Singapore was captured on 4th of January actually.

Many green 'bases' are dots.

Situation evolved from this screen since I have captured several bases in Burma and India.

Batavia fell yesterday (got the turn while I was writing).

As a sidenote: I decided not to do the "China First" again for fun and because I was quite tired of random people on the Italian forum intervening stating that's gamey and whatever. This time I'll get India.

Out of the 14 divisions in India, 12 are in good shape. 2 are 250/300ish due to prolonged fights.

Hey, welcome to the WITP:AE AAR world!
Brace yourself. As an Italian you have a glorious history of WITP Italians to maintain! [:)]

Famed GreyJoy is an Italian too, pity he is not active on the forums since 2015. But his newbie AAR against Rader is legendary tm.asp?m=2761796

Yeah ahahahah thanks !

It has been one of the few AAR I have read here on Matrix Forum back in the days when I was trying to figure out how the game works

I think I have mentioned one of Reder's games recently (yesterday actually) because I read on Greyjoy's AAR that he had conquered URSS in a previous game.

To be honest, I also add myself to the hairy bush lovers as Greyjoy. A lot of fun in those pages [:D][:D]

I am currently gathering some spare info in order to give a better understanding of my game so far.

No spoilers functionality, but you can attach a text file with full combat report, and describe only the essentials in the message itself

Regarding your first game and China, in most PBEMs Japan ends up taking China as the base game doesn't model the difficulties of combat/logistics there very well. What happened to your opponent is not unusual, in other words...and to be honest, having or losing China will not make or break an allied player's ability to win the game.

No, but making it your focus right out of the starting gate to exploit that weakness in the game design, can and did succeed brilliantly in completely demoralizing your opponent costing you the rest of the game.

Frankly, the sentiment on the Italian forums treating it as an exploit is perfectly understandable.

Playing a competitive game is as much about the opponent as it is the game.

I perfectly agree.

I was attacking CK at the beginning of August in that game and I was using basically every division I had. I mean, Burma was defended (a part from garrisons) by a couple of SNLF.

Same for Java and Salomons.

The allied player has been totally passive trying to lure me into an attrition battle over heavily fortified Noumea/Figi/etcetc. I refused to destroy my planes and ships on mega super fortifications and he quitted.

Well, it's gone. Fuck Longstrett. Let's fight Ste_Peterpan, a far better and reasonable enemy

I'm putting together info from my AAR on the Italian forum just to do a recap. Currently I am playing the 24th of March 1942 and I have done a sort of summary up to 14th Feb

On the other side one can argue that it was something like his billionth year of playing the game as Allies and my very first game ever. Not even campaign vs AI. Not even other matrix games.

I mean, I had done tons of mistakes for sure

Sooner or later I'll give you a summary of previous events...

For now, let's go with the current state of the war.

Tuesday 25th of March 1942 - TURN 109

Nothing special happens.

1) Inner Perimeter Theatre

I still have to conquer Philippines, but I landed 7th Division and Mixed Guards Brigade in Mindanao. Those 750AV are currently conquering bases. No enemies apparently.

In Wake (it's part of this 'theatre' since it gets supplied/garrisoned by Home Islands directly) forts reach 5.12; as soon as I get the magic lvl=6 I will put those ENG in Marcus Island.

2) DEI Theatre

2 Infatry Divisions reached Merak from Batavia and tomorrow they'll shock attack the last Dutch defenders of the island. Before that a Bombardament TF with 6xBB will trash the place.

Various AirHQs and Air Support are landing in future large AF around Timor and Flores. Kendari has a naice 100A.S. as well. No signs of enemy ships trying to supply Darwin: if Stefano tries to do that he will get 70 Betty/Nell on his cargo. Not bad.

Conquering dots with paras.

3) Southeast Pacific Theatre.

Many many units in Rabaul waiting to be shipped in various places.
The zone around Tulagi is rapidly growing (Tulagi + 5 other dot bases in development) and an Infatry Brigade (252AV) will hopefully land in Lunga tomorrow. They'll be the garrison of the place for the moment.

In Finshafen/Lae area I am also developing bases with spare ENG units. I usually land on a dot with 1xENG and I get port lvl=1, then I begin to ship other stuff accordingly to the future I plan for the base.

1° Kido Butai (5xCV Hiry-Soryu-Shokaku-Zuikaku-Akagi) and 1° BC Fleet (4xBB Kongo Class) are near Ontong Java ready to rape any Allied incursion. Some midget subs and MTBs are in Tulagi. The area is heavily mined as well.

Gilberts are all 3 reaching lvl=5 forts. Not bad at all. 1xENG and 1xNavGuards are the current garrison of each, many more troops will arrive in a couple of months.

4) Indo-Burmese Theatre

Oh boys, what a pain!

I landed in Diamond Harbour on 29-JAN-1942 without holding a single base in Burma.

Currently I have conquered the southern part of Burma (I'm in the process of attacking Magwe and Shwebo in these days) that was semi-abandoned. Very few Allied AV in this area: every man of the Commonwealth has been sent to defend India. I am conquering the whole Burma with spare Brigades and Naval Guards. 1 Tank Regiment is helping them. 4xTHAI DIV are resting in Singapore after a really tough Malayan campaign.

The Indo-Burmese border has been almost secured on the Indian part (I have taken everything west of Imphal and I'm in the process of marching toward Ledo).

Calcutta is under siege since the first week of February but I still have to completely encircle it. There are 970AV in Calcutta and 500AV in Howrath, the last base connecting Calcutta to the rest of the world. I will surround Howrath as well, leaving Calcutta and Howrath encircled with the entire British Army inside them.

Australian reinforcements to relieve Calcutta siege have been trashed together with other spare Birtish units sent to the zone.

I have 10 infantry divisions (soon 14: the 2 from Java and a couple from Rangoon where they were resting), a fair amount of support and tanks.
Tainan Ku S-1 and a couple of Oscar Ic units are dominating the skies in the zone.

2° Kido Butai is based in Singapore and it usually sails to the area to destroy stuff and threaten my enemy. CVL Hermes, CV Indomitable and BB Royal Sovereign sunk at the beginning of February and the same fate met a couple of SurfaceTF sent from Celyon. 2xCA and 4xCL sunk as well, along with many DDs.
I lost 1xCA (mine) and 7xDDs (1 mine; 5 surface combat; 1 torpedo) in the process of cleaning the Gulf of Bengala.

5) China Theatre

My goal is to confine Chinese troops in Chungking plateau. I have done a strong offensive since January headed toward Sian and Langchow. Dozens of thousands Chinese and Jap died in terrible battles, but I have conquered everything in the area and I am currently on the mountains south of Langchow.

In the Centre I managed to defend Ichang for months thanks to huge aerial support from LBs and some tanks. In mid-March Stefano launched the last set of attacks but I trashed Chinese troops killing as much as 40k of them in a one-week-long battle.

Wuchang has been liberated from Chinese threat today:

Ground combat at Wuchang (84,51)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 43541 troops, 321 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 1333

Defending force 19494 troops, 102 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 340

Japanese adjusted assault: 975

Allied adjusted defense: 185

Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1474 casualties reported

Squads: 1 destroyed, 132 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 11 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled

Allied ground losses:
6972 casualties reported

Squads: 185 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 267 destroyed, 14 disabled
Engineers: 14 destroyed, 19 disabled
Guns lost 12 (3 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Units retreated 3

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

I am also marching with spare units in the south. During late-February I have repelled Chinese offensive in the area and successfully defended Shangai region. Then I counterattacked encircling many Chinese troops that have been destroyed. I keep advancing with a couple of divisions and a tank unit as spearhead, with several 50AV Chinese collaborationists as backup to surround Chinese troops and rout them.
I am in the process of taking Wenchow, a nice base on the sea.

6) Economy

Since I didn't do P.H. attacking Manila instead, I have destroyed many SS on 7th Dec (22 in Manila only....) and some more have been destroyed in other attacks to Allied ports.
Got two of them on the docks when I conquered Batavia as well.

Currently the only sub activity is near Calcutta and some around Truk. Nothing serious.

Production is going fairly well. 100xA6M2 and 100xOscarIc every month are my production and I will keep it for a long time.
660 pilots in reserve, mainly fighter. I fly quite unenxperienced pilots currently, putting the good ones in the reserve for when I will have good planes.
Only 30ish pilots in TRACOM. Potentially, three times more, but I will keep some elite pilots in frontline units for some more months.

R&D is going on decently.

Fuel/Res/Oil/Supply are ok. I am somewhere -500k supplies from 7th DEC.

I will update the AAR doing a nice stuff when I will reach the magic 7 days from the forum registration. I have troubles in posting whatever I try to post as report: "no telephone numbers, links, blabla" and I dunno how to fix that thing a part from waiting

Well, here the situation up to the 5th of April, current turn.

Strategy: I have decided to skip Philippines and to rush for Singers. Landed in Mersing on 8th of December and city captured on 3rd of January 1942 with minimal losses. It took only two attacks: river crossing shock attack and then a single deliberate.

In the meanwhile, I took most of the DEI between December and January, with the very last defenders of Java capitulating in mid-March (they controlled just a couple of bases near Batavia since mid-January).

In the last days of January, I landed in India at Diamond Harbor, while still not controlling Burma.

Difficult and bloody battles have been fought for more than two months before I had been able to encircle many Commonwealth’s troops in Howrath and Calcutta. At the same time, I conquered Burma with no resistance from British units and I have conquered most of the Indian bases near the Indo-Burmese border.

In China I adopted an offensive posture in the northern part of the country, conquering plains southward of Sian and then smashing Chinese units in the base.
Thus, I have been able to push northwards, splitting the northern part of China from the rest. I conquered Lanchow and routed every Chinese unit on my path. Only disorganized, unsupplied and under-strength defenders are still in that area.

Allied losses at sea have been modest. Though Allies have lost at least 40 subs (those of whom I am sure to have sunk, mainly in harbor attacks), other losses have been extremely low:
BC Repulse
BB PoW
BB Royal Sovereign
BB Warspite
CVL Hermes
CV Indomitable

2 British CA
I lost the CA Kako on a mine. A single mine and she vanished.

Then, many days of relative calm, with several landings in key locations in Celebes and Borneo. Moluccas fell and with them many other small bases around DEI.

24th dec 1941

And that’s all for December 1941 - SOON JANUARY 1942
