RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J)
On the turn before, a sub got an xAK near Port Moresby, and it had troops. There was no sign of that ship when my task force arrived. Hopefully it sank, and hopefully it was meant to invade Horn Island.
For the 1st Burma Division, I'll definitely be headed into the jungle sooner rather than later. If OPilot wants to follow me towards China, it'll take him a lot of time to chase me down. If not, they escape to China and maybe, in a roundabout way, to India.
I forgot to mention that the enemy task forces south of Guadalcanal did not head towards Luganville. They took the southern route around Lunga and then to Lunga. My carriers will continue north to wait in an ambush position near Luganville.

Does OPilot know that each new landing of any troops at Wake will trigger a shock attack?
RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J)
Yes, he knows that. At least I think he does. If he didn't know, he should know by now. He did have trouble on the 2nd day of the invasion, when he wanted to pickup troops instead of unload more. I don't know exactly what his problem was. I advised him that I've never been able to reload troops on ships that still have troops on them. He may have had a mix of ships that some had troops and some did not. I don't know. But I can't explain today, the 3rd day of the invasion. He was still unloading.
I was going to counterattack, but I'm going to wait until he stops unloading and shock attacking. He's doing a better job of self-destruction that I could do attacking.
Maybe he wants to get under the stacking limit (which I think he has now). He could then unload supply and have a (slight) chance of continuing the battle. But I will be attacking and clearing the island as soon as it makes sense. I have started loading a couple of cargo task forces at Pearl Harbor with supply for Wake. There should be at least a window of opportunity to resupply after this fight come to an end.

No enemy troops spotted at Wake Island today. Ships are still offshore, and they must have extracted the remaining troops. Carriers sit just southwest of Wake. Sub Silversides spots Akagi and fires 6 torpedoes, but all miss. I expect the enemy ships to all leave the area tomorrow. I'm positioning a few subs between Wake and Kwajalein, and also Wake and Truk to try to intercept the transports and KB. Wake Island has now officially been successfully defended. I expect that OPilot will now be less willing to try another small island invasion that is defended. Because of this expectation, I am becoming more aggressive in the South Pacific. I hope to rush a small Marine unit to Ndeni to guard the base. The unit will be coming from Auckland, so it may or may not actually get to Ndeni in time.
Sub Snapper fires 4 torpedoes at xAK Saiho Maru southwest of Truk, but all miss.
Heavy enemy CAP and bombers over the 1st Burma Division. I redirect the division to start moving due east, into the jungle. It was halfway out of the hex to the northeast, but that is moving to an open terrain hex, and it would just get pounded. Plus, the enemy is moving far faster to the west, and will cut off the escape. Magwe fell today. I was prepared with all of the base forces in that area, and all have railed out to the northeast, and will walk into India from there.
KV New Westminster spots I-23 near Christmas Island. The sub fires 2 torpedoes and misses. Ineffective attack by the KV.
Sibolga, Sumatra falls. Over 80 bombers hit the Dutch troops, which was overkill, as was the 2 infantry regiments, recon regiment, and artillery that attacked the small Dutch commando unit. All of those bombers will be redeploying somewhere else soon. I think that the enemy will fill the skies of Burma.
A Japanese shock attack at Koepang fails at 1 to 2 odds, but it looks like not all of the enemy attacked, and more was still landing. Despite the failure, it wasn't a failure, as the enemy took 8 casualties and the Dutch took 86. The base will fall tomorrow. A-24s are moving to Darwin to hit anything that approaches. There's been a big concentration of enemy shipping at Kendari for a long while now. Some went to Koepang, but not all. Looked big. Maybe Darwin is coming right after Timor.

Patrol craft Perseus has been stationed at Prince Rupert, Canada. There's been an enemy sub next to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians for at least a week. It does recon of the base, and has been stationary the whole time. I ordered Perseus to the Aleutians. I have no other ships in the Aleutians. Perseus finally got there, and charged into battle:
Sub attack near Dutch Harbor at 171,51
Japanese Ships
SS I-7
Allied Ships
PC Perseus, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
SS I-7 launches 2 torpedoes
I-7 diving deep ....
Sub escapes detection
You win some, you lose some.
Sub Snapper fired 2 torpedoes at PB Yamahagi Maru #3 near Truk. One hits but it's a dud. There's an xAK and DD Oboro in this task force.
Maximum enemy bombing of the 1st Burma Division as it turns east into the jungle to escape and evade. There's 6 enemy units with it now but I don't think they'll attack.
15 Nells bombed troops on Wake Island.
Koepang on Timor is lost. Bandjermasin on Borneo holds with 104 enemy losses and 13 Dutch.
2 US carriers and 1 British move into action, hopefully. This is the first Allied carrier action since the early Truk raid. I can do this with just 3 carriers because I know that KB (at least half of it, maybe all of it) is just now leaving Wake.

The 2 surviving heroic Philippine patrol boats Q-111 and Q112 are headed to Borneo for fuel, hoping for an impossible escape to Java and beyond. Near Puerto Princesa, they run into 2 DMS and 2 xAPs, but both sides decline combat. The PT boats have no torpedoes, which is why they left their base at Manila.
North of Kwajalein, sub Silversides spots the big transport task force that was at Wake Island. The sub gets hit with a depth charge and will go to Pearl Harbor for repairs.
Near Kolaka in the Celebes, Dutch sub KIX spots a patrol boat and an xAK, fires 4 torpedoes at xAK Meigen Maru, and get a hit. There's no mention of heavy damage or fires. KIX immediately attacks again, spotting the same patrol boat and a different cargo ship. 2 torpedoes are fired at xAK Madras Maru, one hits, and the ship is on fire with heavy damage. Could be 2 different ships, could be the same ship and little to no damage done with the first torpedo. Regardless, good work by the Dutch sub.
Fighters sweep and bombers bomb Changsha and Hengyang in China. Runway damage at both locations is now near 50. H81s are moved to a nearby base and will LRCAP Hengyang today.
In the morning, enemy ships are spotted still at Lunga. Yorktown, Enterprise and Indomitable launch a coordinated strike. Tulagi and Lunga don't have airfields built yet, so air opposition was not expected, and none was found.
Morning Air attack on TF, near Lunga at 114,138
Weather in hex: Clear sky
Raid spotted at 35 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes
Allied aircraft
Albacore I x 18
F4F-3 Wildcat x 27
SBD-3 Dauntless x 72
No Allied losses
Japanese Ships
CA Kinugasa, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires
CA Kako, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage
CA Aoba, Bomb hits 3
CA Furutaka, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Kikuzuki, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Uzuki
DD Yuzuki
In the afternoon, another coordinated strike identical to the first is sent out.
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Lunga at 114,138
Weather in hex: Severe storms
Raid spotted at 40 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 15 minutes
Allied aircraft
Albacore I x 18
F4F-3 Wildcat x 27
SBD-3 Dauntless x 72
Allied aircraft losses
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 damaged
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed by flak
Japanese Ships
CA Aoba, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
xAK Syunko Maru, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
xAK Mansei Maru, Bomb hits 6, and is sunk
xAK Ryoka Maru, Bomb hits 7, and is sunk
xAK Yae Maru, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Uzuki
DD Yuzuki, Bomb hits 1, on fire
Cruiser Aoba appeared to be the least damaged from the first strike, and was hit hard in the second. The torpedo bombers were still poorly trained, with most torpedo skills in the 50's. They did well against the cargo ships but missed the combat vessels in the morning.
Good work. 4 heavy cruisers either badly damaged or sunk. There are enemy troops on Lunga so it's just a matter of time until there's an airfield here. Allied task forces will return to Auckland now, after an accompanying cruiser force bombards Tulagi tonight. Maybe they'll be some disbanded ships there. I want to show some aggression before I pull back and wait for the next opportunity while I reinforce and build. I have no doubt that KB will be rushing south from the Kwajalein area now that Allied carriers have been spotted.
We all know what cannot happen: the Allies cannot lose their carriers this early. Hit and run.

Thanks. I think I'm benefiting from having so many Catalinas available. With no Pearl Harbor strike, I have many more Cats than I'd have otherwise, with a slow reinforcement rate. I have Cats everywhere. Cats at Rennell Island, just south of Lunga, are covering the Solomons well. Cats at Luganville, north of Koumac, more south of the Marshalls, and not counting the major bases of Noumea, Suva, and Pago Pago. I've had a good idea where the enemy is, and where KB is, most of the time, while the enemy hadn't seen my carriers for 2 months.
We're still in the early period of the Japanese going wherever they want, but it's nice to hit back once in a while.

RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J)
I've got the impression that in WITP naval combat phase means all the identifications are true, even if sub is involved. So those are two different ships.ORIGINAL: apbarog

True ID is strange in case of subs though and more FOW specifically there would add to the game I think. Would be nice to have "unkknown sub attacked the convoy" or "torpedoed a Lima class AK" in the combat report

He was configured to defend against a cruiser force and you did a fine job to know where his carriers were and he didn't have intel on yours. The price the Japanese frequently pay for lack of search or intel.

No good hits on the damaged ships. More subs are waiting closer to Rabaul. Dutch subs also, maybe the torpedoes will work.
Allied cruisers and destroyers move to Tulagi. They find PB Gamitsu Maru #1 and quickly sink the small ship. Then Tulagi is bombarded, but it's a weak bombardment, causing 45 casualties to the Kure 3rd SNLF, and 6 hits on the port. No enemy ships spotted in the port.
North of Koumac, I-16 fires 2 torpedoes at heavy cruiser Houston. 2 torpedoes hit, and the cruiser is badly damaged. It may or may not make it to Noumea. SYS 48/FLOT 70-53/ENG 26-9/FIRE 25
Near Port Hedland, AM Bunbury is escorting an xAKL from Darwin to Perth. Bunbury spots I-124 and get a depth charge hit plus other minor damage on the sub in the shallow water.

RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J)

Near Bikini Island, sub Haddock fires 2 torpedoes at PB Takuna Maru #6, but misses. Enemy patrol boats are patrolling north of Kwajalein now. With a big task force apparently heading back to Wake Island (maybe a bombardment coming), the PB's are looking for my subs.
Just east of Kwajalein, sub Grayback spots I-6 and fires 2 torpedoes. A hit is certain doom, but both torpedoes miss.
South of Suva, I-18 spots a big transport convoy, fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Dundula, and one hits. The ship sinks later in the day. This convoy is headed back to Pearl Harbor with some ships carrying resources, then going to San Francisco as usual. I've been loading up resources in Australia and shipping them to Pearl Harbor when I have ships headed that direction already. It's a minor bonus. Maybe a little extra supply for Pearl if there's a Hawaii invasion. There's excess resources in Australia, so why not. Dundula was either empty or carrying resources.
My air attack plan for Akyab goes mostly as planned. One squadron of P-40Es from Manadalay swept, finding a few Oscar Ic's and a bunch of Oscar Ib's. The Warhawks down many planes for no loss. The other 2 Warhawk squadrons from Chittagong didn't fly.
14 Blens then arrived, unescorted, to bomb the airfield. 4 were shot down, and the airfield damage was minimal. Then my torpedo bombers arrived:
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Akyab at 54,45
Weather in hex: Moderate rain
Raid detected at 32 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 20 minutes
Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 8
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 3
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb Trop x 16
Swordfish I x 8
Vildebeest III x 20
No Japanese losses
Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish I: 1 destroyed by flak
Vildebeest III: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged
Vildebeest III: 1 destroyed by flak
Japanese Ships
CA Mogami
CA Kumano
CA Mikuma
Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Vildebeest III launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo
8 x Vildebeest III launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo
7 x Swordfish I launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo
Lots of torpedoes launched, and no hits. The plan worked, other than getting any torpedo hits. Total air losses were 20 Oscars for the cost of 4 Vildebeests, 4 Hurri IIb's, 4 Blens, and 1 Swordfish. I order a repeat for today, minus the Warhawks at Mandalay. Hopefully the ones at Chittagong will fly.
20 Sonias bombed the 1st Burma Division today. With all of the activity over Akyab, I task the P-40s at Mandalay to LRCAP the division today. Hopefully the Sonias will return without escort again.
Trouble spotted south of the Marshall Islands.

RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J)
Houston
I know that it's going to sink, you know that it's going to sink, but I can't help but try to save her. My experience says that a size one port is not going to put out the fires. So Babel and Koumac are out. Noumea is a size 4 port, about to become a size 5. That might be enough to put out the fires. But we all know that Houston isn't going to survive that many days. Today SYS damage went from 48 to 64, FLOT damage went from 70 to 75, ENG damage went from 26 to 34, and FIRES went from 25 to 45. It had one destroyer escorting. I added 4 Dutch destroyers to the task force today, and ordered movement to Noumea.
I've read that an accompanying ship can help put out fires. I've never read that it helps more to have more ships to put out fires, but that bit of grasping at straws is all that I have to save Houston now. But I have to try.

Rats, hate to see a great ship (the Houston) go down like that. [:(]
Kudos for a great air plan in Burma; shame the Vildebeests all whiffed.

Ships Sunk
4 enemy heavy cruisers were hit at Lunga. 2 are showing on the sunk list. It's possible that none actually sunk, or all 4 of them. I lost a light cruiser from the December 7th KB strike on Singapore. We just haven't lost hardly any big combat ships. Yet.

If the start leaving the ship that would be a bad sign.

If you hold them for a while longer, you can also load some resources at Suva and Noumea.
You are right that only one ship seems to help with fire suppression. I am guessing that another cruiser would be more effective than a DD - vaguely recalling something about ships of similar size being recommended to escort the damaged one.
