What makes this game great.

Somewhere in the Solomon Islands, S-44 attacks a convoy and puts a torpedo into xAK Teihoku Maru. S-44 is damaged {actual hit} by an escort before escaping. Later she attacks the crippled ship {which had been left behind} on the surface and they trade shell hits before S-44 submerges due to damage {heavy fires, I guess the submerging took care of the fires}. Then S-44 unable to remain submerged and surfaces next to the crippled Maru and they begin to fight again till sub slips beneath the waves. I was lamenting the loss of a courageous captain and crew and discovered that S-44 was able to surface {29 sys, 74 flt, 17 eng}. Medals for both crews.

The message "sub slips beneath the waves" may or may not mean that the sub actually sank, but in any case the sub is gravely damaged. It is really cool when you can save a ship right from the brink of destruction, but sadly those cases are exceptional. Congrats for the S-44 and I hope you can get this ship and her brave crew safely into port.

The fact that such a massive scale strategic game can have such moments of high drama is really impressive.

I don't like them, but love the game includes collisions at sea. Most happen to me when I make a TF too big. [:-]

I remember some end-of-times spontaneous messages that would appear for the Japanese on rare occasion. Someone posted a "Communications with Shokaku have been lost and she is never heard from again." Akin to the BB exploding while fueling IRL.

Now that I think about it, that Shokaku message may have been with the original WiTP, I'm not sure anymore.

I like it when Tokyo Rose does a broadcast. [:)]

I wish collisions/accidents/groundings showed up in bold-face or all caps in the OPS page. Or a pop-up combat report. Same with mines. I just found out that mines show up in the after turn combat report but they don't pop-up during turn resolution.

In this game it is Orphan Anne, and her preamble varies with the type and location of combat, but the script result gets repetitive.

Ditto for when your base flips on you. The other side gets notice in their Ops Report that they got the base, but the side losing the notice gets no notice at all unless they happen to see the very quick message at the bottom left box before the next step in execution happens.

When I can be OC and move around every pilot in the Japanese Army and Navy and it probably won’t make any difference in the end.... but I’m doing something.
