I just did a bombardment of Chittagong filled with aircraft. I thought they would go in during the night phase so all my FPs were set to night recon of Chittagong. They fooled me and didn't bombard until the daylight phase and all the ships were not aided by FP recon. However, it looked very effective anyways because I am sure their superior optics and daylight were working in their benefit.

When a TF gets there during night phase but doesn't start bombarding until daytime, I think it is because the D/L on the target was too low at that point. If some recon took place at night to raise the D/L or recon/bombing during the day before the bombardment step, then the TF will start shooting.

At one point I thought is was because all the Ops points got used up moving to the target hex on the night phase, but someone (Loka, I think) showed me that bombardment/battle can still take place after the movement phase uses up the Ops points.

The only time I've had bombardments go during the day is when I set the TF to remain rather than retire.

That is the best way to get a daytime bombardment, but occasionally things work out that the TF arrives and bombards in daylight.
If I am not concerned about enemy counterattack I usually do send in the TF at night and have it remain on station so it bombards in both phases if the DL is good enough. To that end I set the FP of the first bombarding ship to night recon, no target, set another FP to night recon with a target of the hex being bombarded, and the same in daytime for a couple of FPs. Other FPs can do night and day search or ASW as the situation requires.

They were not set to remain on station and during the daylight bombardment no ships had planes spotting, which I assumed was because all the FP recon was set for the night recon. I did face daytime airstrikes but I had the mini-KB in support and though the CAP trailing by one hex didn't stop the attacks, I am sure they cause enough disruption to the airstrikes and they were level bombers probably not trained in naval attacks to a high degree.

A nice haul of Betties. I like the P-39 as a defensive fighter, especially against bombers. I remember reading about a P-39 at Guadalcanal that hit a Zero with the 37mm - the Zero disintegrated.

As far as Sian in concerned, are any of the really trashed units trying to move out? In reserve mode, if I recall correctly, they won't even participate in the fight unless they are really needed.

The probably ran out of fuel. I have lost a ship that way when I forgot to take if off full speed ahead.
