Back when I was somewhat younger than today the Mystic Seaport (1960s) had a Japanese midget submarine on display.

Next visit was to the USS Constitution in Boston which was nothing less than magnificent - still crewed by the US Navy!
My surprise was what was docked on the other side of the wharf - a pristine Fletcher Class DD, the Cassin Young. Other than the BB Missouri I visited a few years ago, the Cassin Young is the best preserved WWII Warship I've had the pleasure of walking through.
There was also a museum of the Charlestown Naval Yard where she is berthed, and a still operational dry dock where the Constitution was refitted a few years back.
Also of note, while Fall River and the Salem have a small fee, the Constitution and Cassin Young can be visited free of charge.

Next stop wasn't a military museum, but worth a stop if you've got an interest in naval history - Mystic Seaport in CT which has historical period town and two sailing ships currently on display.
The Whaler Charles Morgan was in magnificent shape and a great ship to explore. They also have a working wooden ship dock yard where they are restoring the Mayflower II, with artisans gladly explaining their craft.

Been on the Constitution years ago when stationed in the area. DD was not there back then.
There's a DE in Albany, NY, I think its the only one still around, though not 100% sure. Never been, but would like to next time I pass through.

What is the other mini-sub behind the IJN one? British X craft? The apparent lack of torpedo tubes makes me think it was a minelaying sub with exterior droppable mines.

The Constitution can be seen in two ways. For free is the top deck only. For a fee you can tour the whole ship. The tour guides are very well trained....GP

Great pics, Ed! Must have been a nice trip. Sends me down the memory lane. When I was an exchange student at SUNY Buffalo, I made a trip by Greyhound bus through the NE states to visit history stuff before returning home. Buffalo is home to USS Little Rock, a Cleveland-class CL, Fletcher-class DD USS The Sullivans and Gato-class submarine USS Croaker - which sank CL Nagara. My trip started with the WWII weekend at Reading, PA, then the Railroad Museum of PA at Strasburg, on to Boston and Fall River - could not do Salem, New London and Mystic Seaport due to time / budget restraints - then NYFC with USS Intrepid, down to Philly for the protected cruiser USS Olympia and Balao-class submarine USS Becuna and the Liberty Bell, on to DC for an entire week for a lot of things. Naval stuff at DC included the Forrest Sherman class-DD USS Barry and the USMC Museum. However, the US Navy museum was closed for renovation - what a disappointment that was! I have visited the WTC and the Pentagon a few weeks before 9/11 - remembering still causes a lump in my throat. Hope I will make it back to the States on day, so much more to see and nice people to meet.
