One can always invade over land...through Burma. It will be a grind. I, for one, hope this game sees 1946. That'd be fun.

I think as players we rely too much on the Carriers, and with proper planning and misdirection every opportunity is still open to Mr. Kane. Japan just needs early warning...should be very interesting.

Mr Kane probably can no longer support a Central or Northern Pacific strategy. Your fleet is superior for the foreseeable future. Burma is the obvious choice. DEI of northern New Guinea are also options. You recently damaged many of his support and transport ships so intensive naval operations are probably not in the cards. Plan for a long game.

I understand what Jeff is saying, and his words are a caution against overconfidence.

But the importance of carriers isn't overstated. In the right circumstances, they provide mobility - an opportunity to attack almost anywhere - that can be the most important facet of the Allied attack.

Lacking carriers, the Allies can turn to misdirection, but there's an element of luck to that and its also hard or impossible to change directions if the enemy guesses right or if bad things happen.

I think it was Stephen Ambrose that explained that greatest Allied advantage in Europe in the spring of 1944 was its mobility. The Allies could choose to attack anywhere (within reason) on the European coastline. Once that decision was made, however, the Allies reverted to a land-bound aggressor fighting a dug-in enemy. That's the situation Mr. Kane finds himself in now. And he's facing an experienced, capable opponent who typically doesn't leave holes in his defenses.

Thanks for the discussion and praise everyone, I've certainly bought myself a few months to get my defences in order for the long game.

I think John Dillworth has hit the nail on the head. He's pretty much limited to a land war for the rest of 44 and any advances that can be covered by LBA. To start with here is the situation in Burma:





The red line is my new defensive position. He has taken the long route with his mega stack of troops to avoid shock attacking Moulmein across the river. Most of the units are now marching west into Moulmein, but I have a few divs to the SE just in case he tries to go around it instead. He took Rahaeng with a few chindit para divs but my tanks kicked them out, closing off the road to Bangkok (for now anyway).

I think the bulk of the British fleet is up at Calcutta or Ceylon, if he was to employ all of it they could cover an invasion to my rear (green arrows), but the bases on the coast to the south, Tavoy and Victoria point are well bulit up, along with Bangkok of course so it could be a costly effort on his part. Port Blair provides an excellent search a/c base so I doubt he could achieve any surprise either....

As I've already stated he is in the process of moving troops around and I've noticed units heading south from Chunking. With the B29 arriving next month I think he may be looking to take one of the bases circled to put them in range of the western mainland bases for a night bombing campaign.

The most likely option to the DEI, via Timor. If he really wants Darwin he could take it relatively easily if he bombed it daily. The bases with US flags have auto converted after he landed a small unit at Dobo, but it has not been built up at all.

Just going off memory here but every Is in the Kuriles has a minimum of 100 AV behind 4 forts. I doubt he will be thinking about coming that way anytime soon. My money would be on a "safe" advance under LBA through Timor. That's where my CVs are heading in the next few days after the airgroups are fully restored.

If carriers weren't vital for power projection, then why did China just buy and are building two more? Even today the country that wants to be a player on the deep blue sea needs carriers. He has now been hobbled and can not do what some others have done, which is invade beyond your critical defensive ring and use his carriers, as mobile airfields to protect the landing until the exploit you thin inner defenses to develop the airfields to deploy his superior land based air component. His supply lines are now vulnerable to rading by KB elements that can play havoc with his future plans for the next several months.

Very quiet as to be expected after recent events. A few more days and the KB will have its full quota of planes and pilots again and it will sail for pastures new....
