Detecting troops in SR mode in non base hexes

Post by Lowpe »

I want to try and figure out what is the best method for detecting troops in SR mode, on the rails, but not in base hexes (enroute).

Recon missions will give good intel on the target hex, but does it provide any benefit in adjacent hexes? My thought here is no.

That leaves us with either infiltrating land units adjacent to rail hexes or flying a lot of recon flights serially along the rail hexes. Neither is all that attractive.

Any thoughts? Any insight is greatly appreciated![:)]

Unless I'm mistaken, and it's been changed, you won't be able to assign a Recon mission target to a non-base hex unless there is an LCU in the hex. If you have no detection level on them, they are not visible, but you can try setting "empty" hexes as targets. If it allows you to set it, then there is "something" there. [8D]

Recon will go to empty hexes. Setting Ground Attack (bombing/strafe) will not work unless there is enemy in the hex.

Thanks for the excellent clarification!

I don't use that method because it leaks Intel not intended by the developers.

Recon missions with no target set will often find units you were not aware of. Maybe they are modeled to fly like search missions without arcs are coded (percentage chance or whatever).

Now that you mention it, it does not feel so good.[:(] Darn you.[:-]

I use commanders discretion a lot, and I mean a lot. The manual gives rough guideline on targeting, and you need to be real careful near enemy fighter concentrations.

Explain, what were the intentions of the developers. Recon is a search. A road, grid location, etc. can be reconnoitered just as a unit can.

I think he is referring to use of bombers to determine if there are enemy troops in a hex. That was not intended to be a thing by the developers, but they did not have time to write the code to close the loophole.
