When I want to attack in ATG, how do I figure I got pretty good odds?

I saw a tutorial for ATG about attacking with 4-1 odds, I was wondering if the meant comparing the number on the unit itself.

I always go by ear. Try and maximize the attack as best I can, as many sides as possible. Each side gives bonuses for attacking so that is always nice. As for comparing numbers, I rarely do that. Instead I take a look at what is actually opposing me. Numbers can be deceiving. For instance, attacking with only riflemen against a stack of Machine Guns of lower value would be suicide anyway, even if you do have bigger numbers. Not sure what everyone else does.
