Mostly ground actions on the 28th, but the main event is the one that didn't happen. The KB moves in to pounce, sweeps covered by LR CAP hit Manila. Fortunately, the unloading finished in the night, TFs moved out, and all air groups were restationed to Clark Field yesterday in anticipation, set to a 0 hex CAP layered. [8D]

All TFs safely away and shepherded by Allied CVs near Puerto Princessa now. All done. The CVs will now move to Singers and then SE to Soerabaja where another op is building steam. A USA ID is loading at Saigon after the capture of the base there, and will move around to Soerabaja and link up with Dutch units to invade Balikpapan! This would effectively shut down Japanese oil transport and extrication in the DEI. From here Tarakan would be wiped out as well. This is a bit ahead of my desired schedule, so if it comes off well, I'll be moving to the next stage of the strategic plan.

The KB position at the end of turn. It's well away now from the Allied fleets and should't pose a threat to anything for a while. I'm hoping to conceal the next op and if it stays at Takao, it'll have a hard time reacting all of the way to the Southern DEI.

I love the Canadian Hurri model, the XIIb. The best in game for this airframe. Glad I bought out a group and sent them over here. They sweep Cam Ran and wreck a much larger A6M3 group defending.

I lost two good oilers after my replenishment TF strayed too close to Miri. The Japanese are still putting some air groups forward to harass sea lanes here.

All other TFs retreat in order and loading is finished for the Balikpapan invasion and will sail South and East tomorrow around Borneo.

Battambang falls easily to the PI troops. Now armor will close the bedside to Clark Field and then all will move North!

On the 30th and 31st not much to report except some ground actions. The troops near Singora, pushing to move up the Malaya peninsula toward Victoria Point overland, finally broke through the brigade that had been blocking. This has been a good campaign for the Aussie armor to gain some experience. They were mostly at 30-35 exp and are now nearing 45-50 exp.

Up North, the Russians begin to push South along the Chinese border. Some pics soon to show what's happening up there.

Damn!! [:@]

The division moving from Saigon to Soerabaja was given bad orders and disembarked on a remote Dutch coastline!!! [:-]

Big faux pas. So, I'll have to reload, then unload, then reload again. Then head for Balikpapan already reduced in strength. That sucks. I think I'll still have enough to take the base, but it's a lot less comfortable now.

At Bayombang the Allied troops DA and find the large 55th IJA brigade defending. They get a 1:2, suffer big losses, and find forts 3 at the base. More is on the way though, and the armor plus a big 260AV PI ID could still turn the tables if the forts can be lowered. Another try in 3-4 days.

Rangoon falls and now the chase is on. Troops will move to take Prome, then Magwe.

I've been keeping an eye on Bering Is and the Japanese continue to keep a strong aerial presence there to thwart invasion opportunities. I'll hold back for now. No use tuning into a buzzsaw for a base I don't really need yet.

On the 2nd an attack by armor alone fails to lower forts or cause any problems for the Japanese. It mainly reduces the Allied force strength further. A few days of rest needed now.

Elsewhere the mop-up continues in rear areas, with Pontiniak under siege and units moving on Kuantan.

After the Balikpapan invasion I'd like to reinforce Kendari and Ambon, move to retake Manado, and get a base force and some troops to the Moluccas to regain control of the South DEI.

The Japanese try a sweep and low flying Nick strikes at Rangoon and mess up a few xAP there. None sink but one disbanded in the port. CAP gets to the Nicks in the afternoon strikes and knocks a bunch down.

No big news although the Russians and Chinese continue to advance. Pics below.

Singora is about to fall and the Russians clear a path in the North. Paotow is invested and I'll bombard next to see what the tank brigade there is facing.

In the Southern DEI the prep for the Balikpapan invasion is nearing completion as TFs sail out into a staging position off of Java. Banjermasin has a level 3 field and I can sweep from there as well as LR CAP the base. No sign of movement from the KB or other elements of the IJN.

A mass of US engineer, base force and infantry units has just arrived at Cape Town. Trouble is I've got no transport at the base now to move them! About 70 are on the way back and will be able to pick them up in a week or so. I'm sending more back now for the next wave and I'll have to keep them cycling regularly from now on as the US units are starting to really churn out.

On the 5th the DA at Bayombang lowers forts, which is key, and gets a 1:1. Not bad. I'll try again tomorrow. There is now a tank regiment here, but should be overwhelmed by our Grant/Lee powered Aussie units.

Singora falls.

Tomorrow the first bombardment will go into Balikpapan and the amphibs will close in to land on the 7th. I have no idea what is here, so this could be a quick success or a long slog.

A little sideline glance at So Pac here. Amazing that NOTHING is going on down there, and that'll probably continue. No reason for either of us to invest forces here. The Allies do hold Tulagi as a major base, with Lunga and a few other dot bases occupied but undeveloped.

BTW, Bayombong has part of a RF Gun Bn so that could be hard on your Grant/Lee tanks. He might be flying them in - can you LRCAP the base to catch his transports (if any)?

A lot going on this turn. The Allies bomb, sweep and bombard Balikpapan in preparation for landing on the 7th. The fields are shot now, and the CAP should be weak if up at all. Another bombardment at Balik and Samarinda will try to ensure there are no surprises.

A TF of big valuable fast oilers approached Borneo from the North during the turn and got nailed by Allied CV air strikes. Looks like 4-5 tankers sunk. Nothing else seen coming, and the KB is still visible at Takao.

On the ground the Allies try another attack at Bayombang and get about an even result despite a 1:3 DA. Everything will rest and try again in a few days.

At Cam Ran Bay the forts are dropped to 2, but it’s a 1:2, and it looks like it’ll take a few more to wear down the defenders.

Up North the Chinese and Russians continue to push. Paotow looks ready to fall, but another tank brigade is on the way to make sure.

Sept 7, 1942
An interesting day. Troops land with minimal problems at Baikpapan, although the USA ID is not fully prepped and took a few more disabled. I'll bombard tomorrow to see what's in store here.

Up North the Soviets meet the IJA tanks, two divisions of them (!!) on the NW side of China. This vector doesn't look too promising!

To the NE though I think there is much less in place ,and it looks like the combined Soviet/Chinese assault should be able to get through in a few spots. The first attack at Paotow fails but more is on the way and should tip the balance.

The 'R' class BB have proven very useful in this game while the USN recovers from the PH losses and damaged. A few new BBs on the way over as well, which will really help.

It looks to me that his tank divisions were either in reserve or just arrived, not in combat mode - there were no Japanese vehicle losses. My experience with the Russian tanks vs the Japanese is that they will chew up the Japanese tanks at better than 3:1, if the Japanese are the attackers. He has terrain, AV and numbers on his side but I don't see any RF Gun units yet. Once you get some infantry and artillery there you have a good chance to break through! [:)]

I'll be retreating one hex back to meet the arty and AA and an infantry division. The tanks are a bit messed up. They're not T-34s. They're about the same as a Stuart, really.

The IJA tank divisions are tough, and they do have some 45mm AT guns embedded plus a decent amount of arty.

There is a reason this is a three pronged attack. If his two best divisions are here, then maybe the center and Western approaches will have a better chance.

A very good two turns as several missions complete on the 9th.

After a short but intense combat, the PI troops and multi-nation armor push through at Bayombang. I'll halt here and build some forts to consolidate before continuing on. I'll need some reinforcements I think, as the IJA seems to be bringing in more troops to Luzon.

The slightly beaten up 32nd USA ID and some small Dutch units take Balikpapan on the first try. This unit will now begin prepping for a base on Mindanao. I'll also push forward and get some units to Morotai to being adding pressure to the Japanese position in the Southern DEI.

Also in the news, the forts are dropped to 1 at Cam Ran Bay and the DA gets a 1:1. So it looks like this base will fall very soon, delivering complete control of Southern Indochina and a direct shot to move into the North via the coastal road. Troops are also pushing across near Pnom Penh and will aim to get into the Cambodian plains. With Burma in hand, the Malay Peninsula being mopped up, and a threat to link in with China, the Japanese are going to have to come up with something to stem the tide. I'm sure Lowpe has something up his sleeve.

On the 10th the North China escapade gets bombed by the IJAAF, but it's only a scratch. All vectors did bring good AA with them, so it'll be hard to get the usual results in China against the Soviets.

In the mop-up areas Kuantan is attacked and the Allied units get a 6:1 but don't take the base or force a retreat. One of those weird attacks where the defender has no retreat path and losses are light. On the 11th it was 18:1 and still no capitulation. It'll collapse soon.

Progress is made in Northern China as the Soviet tank divisions get a 1:1 at Tatung and lower forts to 2. As long as nothing more can rail in this should be a done deal. This will open a nice road into the central plains for a lot of following troops. Paotow is also weakened and should fall soon.

Cam Ran Bay is also teetering.

When concentrated on a narrow vector it seems even impressive in late 42 what the Allies are beginning to accumulate for reinforcements. Most of these will head directly to Indochina, and some will repopulate the Southern DEI.

Commander of allied force in Kuantan: OK, boys shoot a few shots in their general direction and we will call it a Deliberate Attack. And for Christ's sake, try not to kill any jap until the end of the war!
I do not know what is scarier: that I do understand nothing of this demonic script or that I am starting to see the demons that it evokes.

Me, studying for a PHD entry exam in Applied Mathematics.

On the 12th the IJA tries a DA with the tank divisions one hex outside of Tolun. A full Soviet ID plus arty and AA had moved up and dug in around the battered tank units. They held easily at 1:4, and this will simply be a holding hex until the tanks decide to move out. I'll even risk getting these units trashed to keep the IJA tanks occupied and let ours move freely into central China.

At Tatung in the center a few hexes from Peiping, the DA by Soviet tanks gets a 1:1 lowering forts to 1. This should be the beginning of the end for the defenders unless a last ditch reinforcement arrives.

A bit more happened at Kuantan but this group of units is giving it a go in true Banzai fashion.

A massive 361AV infantry brigade moves into Bayombang. The Allied DA gets a 1:2, but it looks like the PI troops and Allied tanks will be able to wear them down eventually.

Cam Ran Bay falls and everything retreats into the South China Sea. [:D]
