Modifying ice tiles

Post by MVokt »

I gave a try to modifying some tiles and results were good.

Problem came when modifying ice tiles (in winter weather the modified tiles didn't correspond with the ones in the tiles_sprites_ice) that seem to be hard coded and apparently cannot be modified.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi MVokt,

Nothing should be hard coded and customized versions should be possible for all sprites. Are you using the USER customized sprites subfolder or are you amending the original files in the default installation directory of the game? If you are amending the original files and the game was installed to your Program Files folder then you might get some funny results but this has to do with Windows itself and how it controls files in the Program Files folder. Essentially it doesn't want you changing those files and this is beyond our control.

Better to create a custom campaign and change the files in a custom Bitmaps folder as a subfolder of your custom campaign, or install the game to a different folder other than the Program Files folder.

Hi Hubert and thanks for your response.

I did create a customised Bitmaps subfolder in the customised campaign folder. There, I included all customised tiles. In this regard, for example, customised mud tiles appear to work fine and the editing made is showed (there is correspondence in coastline shapes between clear weather tiles and mud weather tiles). But as long as ice tiles appear to work as a sort of an overlay (e.g. ice tiles are showed in grayscale but the sea hexes as we see them in the game during winter weather are blue), any editing made doesn't seem to work.

Anyway, I will try that thing of installing the game in a different folder than Program Files.

I take the chance for congratulating you and your team for the great work done on this game and on the editor. I have fairly checked that the editing possibilities are almost limitless!

Just checked that even if you put the customised ice tiles file in the Bitmaps folder in the main game folder, customised ice tiles won't show but the game default ones. Proof that this file must be hardcoded or something?

Ok, thanks. I went to C:Program Files (x86) > Matrix Games > Strategic Command WWII - War in Europe > Bitmaps > and found 'tile_sprites_ice'. I then opened that same 'tile_sprites_ice' in Paint.Net and colored it Red. I then placed this Red tile_sprites_ice in Documents > My Games > Strategic Command WWII - War In Europe > Campaigns > 'name of custom campaign' > Bitmaps. The result is below. This is as I would expect it, so I would guess that you are not doing it the same way I did ?

EDIT: I see where some hexes in the Kola Bay area did not go red, I guess because it is an ice free port. The other little bits of ice on the hexsides must be another file, maybe the weather_border_sprites.

It's not the colour but the shapes of the coastlines what I decided to change. I just edited some tiles in tile_sprites .png image thus modifying the coastlines of a number of tiles. Same thing I did with the corresponding tile_sprites_mud. For these ones (tile_sprites and tile_sprites_mud) the editing worked fine and the map showed the modified coastlines. But when it came to tile_sprites_ice the edited tiles (corresponding to those edited in tile sprites and tile sprites mud) didn't show.

It doesn't matter color or shape, the file is the file, and it is only recognized by name. For example, you can rename Mountain Sprites to Ice Sprites and then you will have Mountains instead of Ice!

I've modified just about everything in this game and have had no issues [except with the sea zones and somebody else figured it out for me]. Maybe post a screen shot of what issue you are having, or post your modified ice tiles so we can take a look.
