Where's my Avatar?

Hi, I'm new here, with possibly less than a dozen or so posts at the time of this writing.
I uploaded an avatar, but it doesn't show. Any reason for that?

Clicking on My Profile this is the place to upload it. Does it say you have one? I chose the top method and the button is filled next to 'Upload my picture..." indicating my avatar has been uploaded. If you click on the icon to the right it will pop up your avatar in a separate tab/window.

Yes, My Profile is where I uploaded it and I do see that little graphic image to the right of where it says "Upload my picture (will replace the existing one)", just the way you show it in your post, although I think that's always been there, even before I tried uploading an avatar.
At first, I tried uploading a 64x64 avatar, which I'm also using at another site, but I also just tried the maximum size of 145x145 and it still doesn't show.
I do get the message that it uploaded in the little upload window, but that message seems to appear too quickly, which makes me think it isn't really uploading.

Lobster, do you see that little graphics icon under my name? Does that mean anything?

Another thing. Is there a way to set up my preferences so that I get a notification when I visit the site of all new posts in threads I've participated in without getting email notices? I really don't want email notices.

As far as I know if you subscribe to a thread you will always get an email notification.

OK, now I see it.
It may be that, previously, I just clicked the "OK" button at the bottom of My Profile page and this time I clicked "Apply", although that doesn't explain why you saw my avatar previously and I didn't.

Now my avatar seems to have disappeared and the system won't let me upload a new one. What's wrong?

It seems you first have to select 'Don't display avatar', save that, and then go through the process of uploading a new one, or as in my case, re-uploading my old one.
It seems the admins of this site have made the various interface workings as user unfriendly as possible. Aside from this avatar problem, this is the only site I visit that refuses to subscribe me to threads I've participated in. Instead, the only option is be sent email notices of new replies, which I really don't want.
I guess when you run an outfit that has a decidedly hit-or-miss reputation for it's products, you get somewhat paranoid about what your customers write on the boards.
