Had that happen to a solo tanker once up near the Aleutians - it had an accident on board and a fire ignited. The ship burned up and sank, just as yours did. I was playing sandbox (both sides) so I could confirm there were no enemy forces around.

Bottom line - there is a very small accident factor built into the game and about once every 2000 turns something will happen with no reason why. I once had a ship blow up and sink at dockside while loading. Another ship had a magazine explode while it sat in port (shades of BB Mutsu!). All part of the incredible amount of thought and research that went into this game.

I tend to use CV TFs with max size (25 ships) and that can sometimes lead to collisions. Bigger the TF, more the probability.

Also have lost ship (I thing it was ARD aka floating dock)) once with message "tow cable snaps, XXX capsizes". Very nice feature, since you have to "tow" ARD by placing it e.g. Transport TF, since they have endurance of 10.

a small fleet of Dutch Amc's dissappeared without a trace when they were running from the IJN initial expansion. When i noticed their absence and looked up in the reports, I saw them sunk from unknown causes...

Mystery not solved to this day. No reports etc.

Maybe very very large squids are also modelled in this game ? I dont know ...but possible.

Those Dutch AMcs have extremely short range, so you likely ran them out of fuel and then they ran up system damage to 100 and sank. Out of fuel ships (especially small ones) run up system damage really fast. The sinking cause in those circumstances is usually "Unknown Causes". It's a cover-up of the Admiral's incompetence! [;)]

I also have suffered tight convoy collisions, which of course happened in real life.

A game against the AI in late 1943. I've checked the operations/combat reports for this day and the day prior and the only reference is "TK British Hope sinks...."

Perhaps whoever labelled the seacocks was a Pratchett fan?

Had RL experience with same. Got a new system at work, with new consoles. Full console power button top center. Told in training not to press. Asked, then why is it there? Knew what would happen. First day of ops with new system operator pressed button. Mod to disable switches appeared the next day.[:D]

So the nation pinned it hops on a tanker... Is TK British Unity still in one piece?

Bahh...they were swallowed by the "devil triangle" everyone knows that ! The game is so accurate, it is also modelled in the game.

Also, one day late in the war there was this flight of TBMs on a training flight that vanished ...

Unfortunately no. The boiler crew held a referendum in favour of for ing an independent workers collective.

Enemy Naval Search is the usual suspect.

Is it possible to have such an attack during naval search and no mention in the Ops Report for the attacked side?

I thought it would also show last damage by 250lb bomb or similar if it would be search. No such entry at this ship, last damage is empty. Also, it was off cam ranh bay, and nearest enemy base is too far for even pby or b17 to search. It could of course be some unknown tiny forward base not detected yet but little likely vs AI
