Difficulty playing the game?

Post by Mousie »

I absolutely love wargames, and after 4 thousand hours of CMANO, I found War in the Pacific. However, I don't quite know how to make it play well. On my gtx980, inputs are delayed, tabbinng out of the game causes everything to misalign and then become unplyble, and it's forced into fullscreen.

I also find it difficult to capture this game on OBS, too. Is there any way I can change the resolution, force it into windowed mode, and get it running properly on my standard graphics card instead?

Its based on an old engine that wasn't designed to be tabbed out of.

You can do it but it often comes back wonky if at all.

You should review the command line switches that are available for the shortcuts. -w will force it into a window. You can specify the resolution using -px and -py flags. You can address some of the display delays with things like -deepColor and -dd_sw.

You may need to experiment with different combinations of these switches.

You can find them in the readme Doc in the main game folder (IIRC).

I'm a bit lost as to changing these switches. I'm right clicking, going to properties, but then I can't figure out where to input them as the document just says to go to the quick start shortcut and the "target" field. I can't really find where that is

This is a technical issue and therefore properly belongs in the Tech sub-forum.  There are many threads there which resolve problems in getting AE to run smoothly.

This is probably the most detailed thread on getting the right switches installed:

Due to the great divergence in computer setups you will have to read the entire thread to locate the relevant solution.

Is there an archive of switches and what they do? The read only file just has 4 of them, and they are actually helping. I just don't know what I should be changing and how to make that change

I did, but I don't know what any of these commands do, or the potential of such commands, which is why I'm asking if there is a library to use as reference so I could see all that is available, and can clearly see what they do

As for tabbing in and out - it works well in my case when some static dialog window is open - either a "save game" screen, or if you absolutely must go out during replay - "combat report". When I tab back in, the screen is black. Press escape key to get out of dialog and everything is back ok.

You have a ReadMe.pdf file in your main game folder. The switches are explained there.

For scrolling delay, the -dd_sw switch works wonder. However, it will also make Windows 10 desktop "bleed through" in the game. In my case, the taskbar icons sometimes show up in the game.

As for ALT+TAB-ing, can't you try Windows button+D instead? Works for me.

If you are having problems with the display, especially if it's related to alt-tabbing, then you really should be playing in window mode. Just set the -px and -py to a sufficiently high resolution that isn't quite as big as your monitor.

I use -px1600 -py900 on my 1080p, for example.

One of the docs that come with the game has detailed explanation of what each switch does.

If I recall correctly it was called WhatsNew.pdf, or something like that.
I do not know what is scarier: that I do understand nothing of this demonic script or that I am starting to see the demons that it evokes.

Me, studying for a PHD entry exam in Applied Mathematics.
