Whats this time limit? It's not in the manual and during the game I couldn't see any time limit indication.

The time limit is how long the battle will last if there are no casualties. Each side is given a number of victory points (set on the same screen, above the objectives) that count down over time. They go down more if you lose units, and they go down less if you capture and hold objectives.
You can adjust the length of the battle by changing the amount of victory points.

Yes, you can make the battle end sooner/later by decreasing/increasing victory points. If the initial victory point value is low then even low casualties can end the game. If the victory point value is high then the scenario can go on for a long time even after all the objectives have been captured. The scenario designer should find a good balance.

I don't remember what's the longest battle I've seen, but a 15x15 km infantry battle can easily last for 6 hours.
