RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
Well, that nugget of information changes my kami doctrine. Learn something new every day!
RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
ORIGINAL: obvert
What I was getting at here is trying to bring out more from the various posts that have been made over time.
You won't find any dev post over the years with more information or clarity on the subject than the ones I made in Mike Solli's AAR.
This game does allow the player to choose the bomb load of many planes and situations (choosing torpedoes vs bombs, choosing normal vs extended range, getting 80+ exp pilots in to drop bigger bombs, altitude choice, etc). It's therefore somewhat odd and arbitrary why the devs would have wanted to "hide" what kamis carried from the player.
No one with knowledge of the subject has ever said that
- mission ordnance
- range
- size of ordnance
is taken into account in determining whether a hit results. Nor has anyone ever said anything about altitude operating differently for kamikazes than it does for other mission types. So how does any of this amount to devs hiding information.[/I][/color]
What does it matter? Why not just say that there is a bigger boom from a bigger plane? that makes perfect sense, and wouldn't change much about how (smart) players set up their kami strikes. There is no exploit there, no game balance issue, nothing to "hide." So why the mystery? [;)]
Why do you think I nor any dev haven't said that.
I agree a hit is primary. No argument there. I've had success flying FP kamis and Judy kamis with 800kg bombs. Again, that is some of what I'm trying to squeeze out.
Maybe the greatest concern in an effective kami is a good pilot with expert defensive and low naval bombing skills.
Second might be plane speed and manoeuvre ratings.
Third might be airframe durability and armor.
I've already posted what are the factors to look for.
So does the bomb load matter? Sounds like not. So why then research the myriad of 800kg bomb carrying late war planes, most of which don't have a good speed/manoeuvre/durability combo? I've decided already there is no reason. I can convert almost any group to either F/FB/MB and therefore get a good combo of fast and either durable or manoeuvrable airframes to use.
What it would be good to know is how much bigger a boom an airframe type would produce so I could better choose which of the good airframes I know will more often get a hit to dedicate to my low volume kami strikes and which to keep in their day jobs. That's all really.
Tough, you've been playing this game long enough to know that the devs have never in any area of game activity provided such detail. The idea of reducing AE to just a spread sheet has never been the intention of the devs.
Alfred

You get a respectible level of damamge from every kami hit, regarding if it's big or not.
It depends on the target. I've had CAs and BBs basically shrug them off.

On the 25th the Allies do stay on theme by landing a portion of a unit off-base between Mergui and Tavoy. I'll try to march to Mergui, but I again don't think the defenders will hold at Mergui long enough to get there. We'll see. I'll try to fly a few troops in too.
At least two good RN BBs are in the IO and King George V makes it’s presence felt at Mergui. Knowing these are down here makes me even more interested in getting some air strikes to fly and also makes me conservative about holding the coastal bases.

The first strikes today hit a few stragglers, sinking them both. Kamis likely heavily damage an xAP in a very efficient 2 for 3 strike, and Dates finish it off later in the afternoon.

Up North the ground bombing reaches a pinnacle today. A lot of devices being destroyed rather than just disabled.

RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
The Allied strikes come in the day today, aiming for Sendai. This didn’t look good during the sweeps with only a few Ki-100 manning the fort.
Later, since the strikes arrived in the afternoon, other friends from nearby bases did arrive and were able to hit some bombers.
It wasn’t a big strike, but surprisingly good results after all is said and done, although there was some damage. The Ki-100-II factory is now at 0(20). This is the first significant air production damage of the war. I might just rebuild it, but I’ll wait to see how much the Allies can force their will over Northern Honshu.

RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
It wasn’t a big strike, but surprisingly good results after all is said and done, although there was some damage. The Ki-100-II factory is now at 0(20). This is the first significant air production damage of the war. I might just rebuild it, but I’ll wait to see how much the Allies can force their will over Northern Honshu.
Nope, that's a mistake IMO. 20,000 supply that could potentially be bombed again next month. Absolutely not worth it for as meagre an airframe as the Tony. If it was the jets or the late war stuff I'd say go for it, but IMO save the supply.
RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
The final tally isn't so bad this turn. The Ki-100 is outdated, and I know it should be better supported with Franks here. The good part is downing 3 B-29s and 2 B-29 recons as well!
Damage is moderate to the industry. I can take these little hits as long as I begin to get into the bombers and take a tithe each time.

I hear that. It all depends on how well I'm defending. "Re-bombed" doesn't mean a free run at it. In a month I might be eve better prepared to get to the Allied bombers. Or the P-47N could be could be slicing and dicing. I wan to wait to see f rebuilding is worth it. The Ki-100-II isn't bad now, and if I do rebuild I could always switch to the Frank. [;)]

Just remember, it's Sendai. If it was one of the major industrial cities where you'd keep a ball-of-yarn CAP up, then maybe. Defintely not Sendai - if the only air factory there is a size 20 Tony factory and it's toast, I'd even consider pulling out some of the CAP squadrons for somewhere with more industry.
To be honest, there's a lot of industry in bases like this - the loss always hurts but it's impossible to defend everything in enough strength for it to matter.

The first attack at Mergui is not promising. It's not catastrophic yet either.
My transports didn't transport so I'm brining in Emilys. Need to replace losses and see if I can get a 1:2 result, which would buy a bit of time.

On the 27th Nicks kick some butt over Hachinohe. The combination of fighters, flak and forts mean that the Allies lose 9-14 USN 4Es for no strat hits and only 5 airframes destroyed on the ground. The NF had decent warning times here, which might be part of the success too.

I brought a lot of F/FB into Bangkok ,but they're all mediocre pilots. I hoped number would win out. They suffered against sweeps but did last and get to the bombers. Reducing the numbers here is crucial as he then has to decide whether to refill these with new models or reserve those for the North.

RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
Over Honshu the Allies go for Hachinohe. Finally a strike goes in before ALL of the sweeps have cleared he air. The defenders did pretty well though once the sweeps came as well. Got to the big boys this turn, but they did get through to wipe some resource hits and the afore mentioned Tony factory. (Lost track of turns, it is actually here, not Sendai).

RE: The Elephant Vanishes : obvert (J) vs Historiker_SqzMyLemon_Canoerebel (A)
The Allies continue to take hits to the exposed troops near Kushiro. Some of the tank units might have gone to greener pastures this turn. [;)]
Over at Para the Allies try a bombardment that doesn't come off well.
Mergui continues to fall slowly. Now I'll focus on reinforcing Tavoy.
An even more destructive bombardment at Rangoon.

Some 40+ 4Es are downed on the day, including a handful of B-29s. Some good sweepers also lost, and all of it over IJ bases where the majority of downed pilots won't return.

It's March. 1945. The Japanese are still hauling almost as much fuel as can be produced from the SRA back to Japan. Subs and other recent surface incursions have taken a toll, but not stopped the flow. The HI is humming, largely untouched in the Home Islands. The only significant centres damaged are at Sendai and Sapporo. A lot of resources are offline, so I'm beginning to haul reserve stocks (left for this part of the war) from Formosa and the PI.
In the air the war has been intense since Dan took over, now exactly one year ago. It's been nearly even, with the Japanese loss disparity almost made up by the number of 4E shot down. I'll show figures in the next post.
Not much happened after the intense air battles of the last few turns, but there has been a shift in my thinking. It's time to consider pulling back in Burma and re-distributing the units there to other defensive positions. I've got some of the best divisions on map in Burma, and I'd like to replace some and bring the home. I'll begin pulling back by abandoning Rangoon, Pegu and the blocking hex nearby. All forces will move to Moulmein and from there about 1/3 will move immediately to other destinations.
After seeing the Allied response, the remaining block at Moulmein will be assessed. If he tries to come direct I want to see results of the river crossing into a forts 6 x2 hex between these large Armies. If not, and he choses to go around, or splits the force, I'll begin to move forces out and keep only a smaller army to delay at Moulmein. Or I might abandon it altogether.
Some depends on the success of his coastal campaign as well. I need to get a stop at Tavoy, or it's time to bail. I have two tank regiments and an ID along the route to reinforce, and they should be there within the week. He only landed to IDs worth of troops, so it might take a bit more to break through. He'll be able to quickly redistribute though after I leave Burma. That is the worry.

This is a look at the past year in air losses. The Allies have done well overall, but in the air the losses have been extreme.
