A couple of things . . .

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

A couple of things . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

I have been playing this game over the last month or so and have noticed a couple of things that might need re-considering. The first one is that Germany often raises its Volksturm and Landwehr regiments when it is still advancing on the Eastern Front. The text about these units makes it sound as if Germany is on the verge of invasion but this has not been the case in two of my games. So perhaps the sequencing is out a bit here? Secondly, in anticipation of the D-day landings in either 1943 or 1944, I took the Atlantic Wall option but then also sent an engineer unit to French coast to build fortifications all along the coast from Dunkirk to Nantes. Consequently, when D-Day occurred in 1944, the Allies were barely able to get a foothold anywhere, and the paratroopers that land were quickly wiped out. So far so good, but the odd thing is that the troop carriers have stayed in the English Channel for about a year now (they are still there!). I would have thought, after a certain point, that the invasion would have been aborted. So maybe this needs an additional script to that effect?

Apart from these relatively minor issues, I think this is a superb war game (I even like the naval system) and I will definitely be purchasing your next effort.

Thanks for the feedback! [:)]

I've just had a look at the settings for the Volkssturm and Volksgrenadier and they do require 2 Allied units within 6-10 hexes of Warsaw, or 4-6 of one of these: Konigsberg, Cologne, Mainz or Munich.

So hopefully there are some Allied units perhaps in the west that have triggered this?

I cannot check now as the game has moved on but maybe 10 hexes from Warsaw is the trigger as the front line was going backwards and forwards a little bit at one stage.

Thanks, perhaps 10 hexes of Warsaw is a bit too much then. At least there is a logical reason for having seen it in your game though. [:)]

Just to give you an update on my current 1-player game as it might suggest one or two things for the new patch. I haven't played that much so I am still learning things here and there and I am using the default intermediate settings.

I am playing as the Axis and it is the autumn of 1946 so there are about 8 turns left. I am holding Leningrad and the Finns are allied with me and we are advancing north east from there. We are also beginning to encircle Volkhov. There have been sporadic attacks on my units in Leningrad but I have never felt threatened. The Russians have re-captured a large swathe of territory south of Leningrad so my German units in Leningrad would have to evacuate by sea (I totally control the Baltic). I am holding Riga, Polotsk and I am generally advancing slowly again towards Smolensk and Kiev. The Russians, however, have made big inroads in the Balkans and have knocked Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria out of the war. I am holding most of Greece and I have just recaptured Tirana in Albania through a parachute drop from mainland Italy. I am counter-attacking in Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia and I am winning slowly but surely. Russian losses in the game have been extremely heavy. Elsewhere, I have completely conquered everything that was held by the British in the "middle east", including the Iraqi oilfields. I have even completely driven the Americans out of Tunisia and Algeria with the original Italian forces in Africa. The Allies have finally managed to land in Normandy after 18 months of sitting in the Channel. The Germans are slowly being pushed back here but Allied losses are very heavy.

So it is quite an odd looking map overall. I would have expected the Russians to throw everything at Finland and Leningrad first, rather than send a huge number of units into the Balkans. So maybe that is one thing to look at for the AI? The other thing is the ease with which Germany was able to conquer the "middle east" and north Africa once Egypt was lost by the British. Perhaps that needs to be a bit tougher? Some more British garrisons maybe? And maybe the Americans need to protect North Africa a bit better too? The oddest thing, of course, was the Allied invasion force sitting in the Channel for 18 months. Maybe at some point the invasion has to be called off and Allied forces directed elsewhere - to the Mediterranean to attack Sicily and the Italian mainland, for example?
