The Allies are making progress, but I'm still optimistic about the course of the game. The Allies seem to have a long way to go to the 2:1 mark, but the Japanese total VPs can go down from losing bases and having bases undersupplied. This is one reason I've waited so long to evacuate Burma. The longer it takes to get the territorial gains, the more pressure is put on the Allied position in a VP perspective.

Based ont eh content of the Allied troops now moving on toward Kushiro including the entire Army that had walked to Bihoro, I thought maybe the Allies would come and protect them a bit more from the daily bombings of the IJAAF. Fortunately I guessed rightly. Unfortunately, none of my sweeps flew to hit the CAP the moved in.

I had intended 5-6 groups of Ki-83 and Frank Ki-84r to fly from Muroran to hit the contested hex, and that would have been fun, since the entire DS seems to have moved in. I cancelled the IJAAF runs and saved a LOT of planes from getting smashed, but did lose around 300 because my naval planes flew gamely in to try to sneak under the Big Blue Blanket. Only a few did, and one actually got a kami hit on the Victorious, but I'm sure that wasn't severe on that armoured deck.

So a day of big losses that could have been very different. At least it wasn't as bad as it might have been. Everything is shut off for tomorrow.

On the 3rd my sweeps flew but so did the DS. Far away.

Happily, some of my air strike groups that I'd failed to turn off still flew and the attacks on Allied troops resumed, plus some Dates sank a few LSTs carrying what appears to be LOTS of support vehicles/AFVs. I'll take it.

The Allied focus on the outer Kuriles continued with Venturas and sweeps hitting.

Nothing new down South, but troops have started moving back from forward positions in Burma.

Virtually nothing happened on the 4th. This break is giving my fighter groups a good chance to replenish. Every day 1-3 air groups take on 10-12 airframes to get back to full strength. In about a week I could potentially begin to accumulate pools, but that's kind of a pipe dream against Dan. He does not stop. I think he'd sweep P-40Es at me if that's all that was left in the pools. [:D]

One thing I did notice during the DS visit was a lot more (50+) Wildcats in use of all variants. That's positive.

In the South Rangoon troops are moving now and will vacate in two days unless the Allies attack.

On the 5th night bombing resumed at Sapporo. The NF took care of business again. About 15-20 4E of various types taken out for only ~6k fires started.

The Allies also invade Shasukotan. Lots of small craft damaged/sunk by CD guns, but nothing major.

A lot happening on the ground on the 6th. The Allies keep up a small night bombing of Sapporo, but mainly nail Shasukotan in preparation for the ground DA there. It gets a 2:1 and the base will fall soon, as expected. The landings still take a small toll, which is nice.

In the South the Allies try two DAs. One near Pegu alarmingly gets a 1:1 as the troops in reserve mode move out of the hex and lose their fortified status. Luckily it's today and they're almost all going to pass into the safe hex tomorrow. One ID will be left and could get caught out. Fingers crossed it makes it.

The Allies also try at Tavoy, but fail with a 1:2 that does not lower forts. [;)]

The Allies reclaim Rangoon, and now I have to book it out to make sure I have the rear defended.

Almost 150 4E including about 70 B-29s hit Sapporo manpower and airfield at night. The NF thwarted the majority but eventually they wore down and some of the later strikes hit for a decent amount of fires, up over 20k. The industry here is being whittled down, but at least there is a cost and it's a slow process.

Down South the Allied CVs moved into range of Victoria Point, resulting in some frustrating strikes. It seems they were close enough to be also protected by some LR CAP, and the strikes only got a few planes through. The only meaningful hit was on the King George V, one kami strike. Seems to be my MO.

The Allies take Shasukotan easily.

I did get lucky around Pegu where my very experienced ID did not make it out of the hex, but the Allies didn't attack. Only a bombardment. So all is good for this phase of the retreat, and all forces will move to Moulmein.

On the 8th the air war turned again. I needed to get some VPs back and sent in big sweeps to Urrupa-Jima where the Allie reportedly had a 160+ plane CAP. The Ki-83 groups tore into mostly Wildcats and one Corsair group. The result was 100+ Allied fighters gunned down to a loss of only 16 Ki-83 in A to A. I'll let those groups rest for a day and pick another target.

The Allies also obliged by trying a daylight attack on the recently reinforced CAP at Sendai. I've got some of the best groups there now, and they performed well, getting positive results against the P-51 and Corsair sweeps and sticking around for the 4E strikes, including a large force of B-29s. Today, finally, we got to them! [&o]

In the South big strikes hit Moulmein (and its big flak guns[;)]) and also the troops moving to Tavoy. I'd LR CAPed those this turn, resulting in a decent haul of 2E bombers and some sweepers. Now my groups are worn out and have to move back. All troops got out of the hex near Pegu, and now the troops from Rangoon and Pegu are moving back together. They should get to Moulmein safely within a few days.

Allied units again try for Tavoy, but fail to get a positive result or reduce the forts. Reinforcements should arrive in time here.

On the day about 25-30 B-29s are downed, plus another 20 odd other 4Es, and the Allies lose 180+ airframes. Japanese losses are about 80. The Allies also lost around 30 P-51D, which is a lot in a day.

Out of nowhere about 45 B-24s attacked Truk. Odd. Is something planned down there?

Getting to this many B-29s is a rarity. His sweeps are much less effective at long range, so I need to bear that in mind if he starts to use Kushiro and Wakkanai more often. I would there have an opportunity to use the sweeps effectively and possibly even bomb the fields, knowing flak would be tough.

On the 10th I sent in the dogs. All Ki-83 groups swept Shikuka. It was a test of what they can do, and what the Allies still have around. I chose this turn since almost all fighters in the North were back at home base, with only about 50 others on the Kuriles. It gave a very good idea of force composition and airframe types available. The results weren't bad either! [;)]

On the day we got about 1.5:1 over the Allied CAP. That's not bad against a base with a 1,000+ fighters in it. Not all were set for CAP unfortunately, but most were.

This bodes well for future runs here when the Allies are engaged in other pursuits or spread more thinly, and that is another thing I wanted to do. Make Dan have to consider defensive options. For a long while I've been hanging back, not striking often, picking opportunities. I'll continue that work, but there will come a time when I can really let loose. After this new crop of trainees is ready, in only a few weeks thanks to the massive influx of training groups now on map, I'll have much more grist for the mill.

In the South action has quieted down now that reinforcements reached Tavoy effectively. The Allies look to be moving back to Mergui. I await the next developments here. My troops at Moulmein now have more flak than in Tokyo, and every bombing run there will be painful for the Allies! [:)]

The Allies look to still be moving toward Truk in the Central Pacific. Lots of fun to be had there if they do land.

The Allies come back strong to Sapporo at night on the 11th. The first wave gets through the NF and gets big fires going. They reach nearly 150k at one point in the night, reducing mostly the resources here.

The NF and flak do take a tithe, with around 15-18 4E of various types downed on the day. I'll keep rotating NF groups to get fresh pilots and airframes in here.

I see some amphibs approaching Truk. There could be a landing any day now. Bombers continue tot hit the base doing very little to the troops.

Here is a shot of Truk. I've got one regiment there, and a naval guard and part of a brigade have been flying in the past few days. If the base gets to around 250AV it'll provide a bit more difficulty considering the terrain and forts 6. I'd like to see the CD guns in action though! [:)]

The strat bombing of Sapporo is not surprising, but it is surprising it's taken so long to reduce. The Allies have been in range since June 44. The massive amount of resource points here helps to shield the HI/LI from being completely reduced by fires like those produced i note most recent attack, with only one HI point lost so far.

Allied strat bombing will get some new toys this month with the B-29B and it's double bomb load. those are the real killers, but they need shielding from NF, and so any reduction in other 4E and especially earlier B-29 variants helps even in to the future. He still hasn't tried any of the biggest industrial centres in Central Honshu. There are a LOT of NF and flak arrayed all over this region, and so I'm hoping it'll be an even slower, more painful process for the Allies.

On the 12th the Allies invade Kunashiri. I tried a CAP placement on the outer Kuriles for a day but he changed settings and bombed Kunashiri instead of the previous millruns to Para just today. Damn. Would have been a good haul.

I'm going to prepare sweeps as it looks like the DS is moving in toward Hokkaido. I'l send the big Ki-84r Frank groups with it's 97 planes toward Kushiro. See how that goes.

Recent Allied moves in the Kuriles have destroyed some troops but also reunited fragments and slowed others to rebuild. Defences on Hokkaido are much stronger now, and I think a ground based slog is unlikely after the Allies pulled back from Bihoro. This is the first action of the France NF as I'd reserved them for Tokyo until getting enough numbers to upgrade other units. The 14th offers another chance to sweep away Allied fighters at Kushiro. It looks like the Allies are loading up some troops and moving out. Maybe getting ready for a next invasion. Of Honshu? Korea? Manchuria?

The Ki-83 do okay on the day, but the Franks take full advantage. The first sweep is marginal, then 90 Franks show up and decimate wreak havoc on the 2nd and third tier fighters especially. Good points but even better for pilot kills I'm sure.

Out at Onneketon the A6M8 there do really well against the P-51s that sweep and manage to survive the major strike of Libs to be able to fly out today. I love that these very marginal battles are costing the Allies time and material (and VPs).

On the 15th the Allies continue to load up, and although I set sweeps, they don't fly. I'd also set some strikes, but they were then a day late and a dollar short. Next time, maybe. The Allies get these troops away, but there are loads still at Kushiro, and Wakkanai for that matter.

I set a small strike for Ketoi, which listed an APA in port. The Peggys find three LSTs. Whatever. I'll take it.

An Allied bombardment at Paramushiro show that the invading troops are still far from ready to take this base. I might just send some supply to see what the guys here can do. With forts 7, some very good arty and tanks, and a few very experienced units, it could hold for a while. Might as well.

The Allies try a small quick invasion at Babar which fails.

Down South not much is happening. I sent a mini-KB down here to confuse the Allies plans. It looks like it may have been spotted at Cam Ran Bay. If the Allies were paying good attention, (which I expect) then the invasion threats from the RN might slow down for a while, allowing some consolidation of the defensive positions.

That's very encouraging to hear, I've picked them as my go-to for just those factors. Glad to see it makes a difference.

I think you're using the Ki-83 in the right way.

What's the ki-83 pilot EXP like? I'd even go as far as to gut your regular squadrons of all the good pilots just for use in the 83. Like, all of them. Nobody gets to fly an 83 unless they're 80/80/80 XP/Air/Def. It's maybe extreme, but the 83 is the best sweeper you'll get (bar the 94-II, but it's a bit short-legged), and AE seems to reward stacking the odds. If you're flying against Wildcats in the 83 then you'll have some crazy pilots in short order.

That's very encouraging to hear, I've picked them as my go-to for just those factors. Glad to see it makes a difference.

I think you're using the Ki-83 in the right way.

What's the ki-83 pilot EXP like? I'd even go as far as to gut your regular squadrons of all the good pilots just for use in the 83. Like, all of them. Nobody gets to fly an 83 unless they're 80/80/80 XP/Air/Def. It's maybe extreme, but the 83 is the best sweeper you'll get (bar the 94-II, but it's a bit short-legged), and AE seems to reward stacking the odds. If you're flying against Wildcats in the 83 then you'll have some crazy pilots in short order.

I've kind of decided to go the other direction with the 83 so far. Get almost great pilots in them and let them become great. So usually 75-80exp but not golden. I've kept the very good pilots in the normally sized Frank groups and they seem to sweep almost as well, and the one big 97 plane group is great.

I like having a mix of NF though. The Nicks are quicker and get in a lot of shots too, but more get hit. The Irvings seem the best at reaction from several hexes. It'll be interesting to see what heppens when he goes for the bigger bases where there are 40+ NF in base and several other groups on 1-2 hex react nearby. Plus about 50 radars and loads of flak. I know nothing is impenetrable, but Tokyo and Osaka should be pretty tough nuts.

A light day of action. Behind the scenes I should mention that all is still cranking with the Japanese economy. I've got 155k+ armament in the pools even after about 12 IDs showed up recently. There are about 57k+ vehicles in the pools. Around 4.2 million supply at the last check. Fuel and oil holding steady and being transported as quickly as I can move them.

The Allies seem to be consolidating in the North, prepping for something new. I wonder where?

1. Korea

If he tries here, the bases on the North side are well prepped and stocked, and in good terrain. I'd love a landing there. I worry though that after recent non-base landing success that he'll try for one of the clear non-base spots near Fusan. I'm sending a few regiments to hold these and dig in, plus a bit of arty. Landing in a non-base hex against a unit should be much harder than unapposed at least.

I'm also concerned he could DS it around Honshu to the South and to the soft underbelly of Korea. That would be tougher. I've got about forts 4 at all of the bases in the clear on that side, but there are a lot of them, too.

2. Honshu

Northern Honshu bases are very ready. Lots with forts 7-8. Mid and West Honshu are getting there. Most with forts 5-6. So much could rail in it would be a slog anywhere on this island.

3. China

I also worry he'll aim to come around to China, hoping to pull my troops out of their mountain redoubts where they're holding back millions of Chinese. China has some mobile reserves, but probably not enough to face an Allied kitchen sink landing and stifle it. He could take some time but get there and cause a lot of re-organization on my part. This would also work to close shipping from the DEI on that side. I still hold the Marianas though, and could still send things through other routes at least sporadically.

4. The Philippines and/or Formosa/Okinawa

A boatload of VPs and a great position to close shipping, try to trap Japanese troops farther South and move on many other locations. It's lightly defended as well. Anything that would split the Allied forces and concentrate less on strat bombing right now would be good for the Japanese, though. China, South Korea and the PI are quite far from his 4E bases, and would require LBA to move in after the DS forces a landing.

Ok. Maybe a moment to do an update. I'm a bit behind here but hope to catch up before returning to the game back in London after an Aussie holiday in Melbourne.

The Allies go for Sapporo at night on the 27th. Lots of losses for the 4Es as NF and flak combine well. Unfortunately Dan also mis-set his bombers to attack the fields, and this resulted in over 100 4E targeting Sapporo and destroying over 20 airframes on the ground. This over-stepped the game's long-standing HR of 50 planes per target on port/field night strikes. I guess it's worth it and maybe it's better in the end, as fewer strat points were earned and the results were not compounded by daytime strikes and sweeps.

Dan apologised and it's all good. Just a missed setting.

The Allies begin to branch out to new targets again, aiming for Kanazawa during the day today. I had only moderate defenses, but managed to take some tithe for the strike. Only Tojo and A6M5b were up for CAP and they got 1:3 against Stangs and the newly introduced P-47N. Better than expected considering. The industry does take a hit, with the Ha-45 factory in shambles and the vehicles factory reduced.

The big hits against the Allies were over Moulmein, where all of the Burma Army flak is located. The Allies lost over 60 bombers down here in one day, and that from 10-15k altitude strikes! [X(]Althought that's fun, it shows me I've got more AA than needed here, so I've promptly sent back a handful of units to the Singers-Bangkok rail line bases. I'll be shipping some stronger units back to the Home Islands soon too.
