What just happened?

I was trying to attack the KB...I went to bed excited to run the turn in the AM to see the carrier battle. I was thrilled to see after fleet movements my carriers were just 4 hexes away from the KB--all my planes would be well within range. Only no attacks all day! The KB launched attacks (and sank) some cargo fleets nearby, but ignored my 3 carrier TF.

There was bad weather, but is this normal?

So I had thunderstorms in my hex. That will shut down carrier ops?

The KB (which is probably 2 or 3 carriers with depleted air groups because the AI has been impaling itself on my LBA), has "extreme overcast" and did launch attacks, but I show no detection over my carrier group.

So perhaps the story is that:

1) I didn't launch attacks because of the weather,
2) The AI attacked fleets other than my carrier group because they didn't spot my carrier group?

Also, the KB has mysteriously stopped in a hex in which I laid a minefield, but I didn't get any notice of a mine going off, so that is a bit speculative (it went about 7 hexes rather than 9).

Thunderstorms in your carrier hex MAY shut down flight ops, but it's not guaranteed.

1. I want to do Air Group upgrade from E7K2 Alf to F1M2 Pete. After selecting, I have a window with a question. What does this mean and what should I do? Yes or No?

Image

2. In Operations Report have this: Troops and Equipment from 1st Maizuru Assault Div lost during loading of TF 119
What does this mean and why? How can I find out what and how much is lost?

I still haven’t totally figured out this av thing: when you mention that Curtis “isn’t one of them” this means it can’t carry supply?
what BB meant was that Curtis cannot operate planes while at sea (="carry planes" in BB terms). Very few Allied AVs can. Contrary to Japan where every AV can fly FPs at sea.

Three brand new questions.

I have read that you can sweep mines from 1 hex away. How do you do this? Maybe set them to sweep one hex away with a remain on station order and max react of 1?
Remain on station is enough. Be advised, that minesweepers will physically go to that next hex to sweep the mines. And suffer from enemy CDs if those are present to defend the minefields.

I’ve also read that one you get to airfield level 8, the effect of aviation support is doubled. Is this right?
Yes

And also at a certain level aviation support becomes “infinite “. Ie, 280 aviation support planes at a level 9 airbase can support every plane in the universe? (Maybe 140 based on the question above this one)
No, level 9 airbase gives you inlimited # of airgroups without overstacking penalties on coordination and flying. The old WITP had that feature with infinite air support I recall. No more
Re: GA's last point, the number of aircraft engines still counts. I had built Aden's airfield to level 9 and the BF there seemed to be handling the aircraft without any issues. I then let my newly arriving squadrons remain at Aden for training before moving them on-map, and accumulated a LOT of aircraft at one stage. I noticed that there were an increasing number of aircraft under repair so I checked the BF. To my surprise it had fatigue in the high 90s and morale at 1! I was working them to death! I set the BF to rest and moved a bunch of the best-trained squadrons on-map - the BF recovered fairly quickly (high level base, lots of supply and no other LCUs for it to look after so support could concentrate on its own unit).

The box is asking you if you are abandoning the upgrade to Jake or want to keep that as the next step after the change to the Pete. If you click "Yes", the Jake upgrade will be kept and will happen automatically if you do not subsequently change the unit to "Do not upgrade". If you click "No" the upgrade will likely show the Pete as the "next upgrade", meaning there is no change from Pete currently planned. You can always go back in and change the upgrade path again.

This usually occurs at a small port when loading/unloading large equipment. The losses are in the ops report IIRC.

The Save folder has several types of reports for each turn along with the saved game file.
In addition, the Operations Report can be accessed in game through one of the buttons at the top of the screen.

Edward, you don't need to check a save file to find the ops report. When you are playing the game, it is one of the buttons on the top of the screen.

Conceptual question...how do you attack an island or other base outside of your fighter range? This is before a zillion CVEs show up.

I can think of a few ways.

1) use carriers to try to punch through the air defenses and close the airfield(s). My experience of carriers vs. LBA is not very appealing.
2) use carriers to cap an invasion force that is led by BBs that will close the airfields. I'm not sure how to do this in practice. Assume a BB can move 6 hexes at full speed. If it stops 6 hexes shy of the base in the previous turn, it will be exposed to escorted LBA the previous day. Otherwise, it will not get there at night and will be rather exposed in the day.

What I am leaning towards is the following:

D-Day -2: Carriers long range capping BBs. BBs are 6 hexes out, CVs about 9 hexes out.
D-Day -1: BB moves in at high speed to bombard the airfield. Invasion fleet moves to within a hex or two of the base to land the next turn. CVs move within the same hex as the invasion force so it can share the benefits of the CAP.
D-Day: Invasion fleet and secondary bombardment fleet move to the base. Invasion fleet unloads and secondary bombardment fleet targets the ground troops.

Is this the general idea?

If you have CVs/CVEs - move in with their CAP protecting the amphibious assault TF.

If no CVs in the theatre and the island is isolated - bombard with cruisers, they are faster than BBs and make holes in the landing strip just fine. Plus bomb the airfield with 4Es. When enough bombing/bombarding is done move in.

If no CVs and the island is just one out of several airfields in the sector - wait until you have CVs/CVEs.

Yeah, KB is lurking somewhere out there in all those scenarios and you have to do it fast. Unless it is 44+ and you have a Death Star already

If you mean file is operations report in Save folder - I know about it!
My question is different! I want to know what exactly was lost and how much? (Troops, Guns, Vehicles)
