Current Impressions on the Game?

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Current Impressions on the Game?

Post by headhoncho »

I'm a long-time MWIF forum lurker and WIF player who hasn't played in a few years, and so I haven't yet jumped into the CE rules. So I actually should still be very familiar with the MWIF ruleset. My impression is that tech support has faithfully (incredibly, incredibly faithfully) been squashing bugs and progressing the game over the years, to the point that solitaire is now mostly bug-free, and Netplay is on its way there.

My goal is to play some solitaire to refresh my own memory on the rules, play with a current MWIF owner friend of mine, and also introduce another friend who has never played WIF to a computer version which enforces the rules. I'm guessing most of our play will be via PBEM.

Eventually, after all three of us gain a level of mastery of the MWIF rules, my thought would be to transition to Vassal and self-enforcement of the new CE rules (which I understand have some changes from MWIF, but the general fundamentals remain the same). So if you've read this far, hopefully I can trouble you with three questions:

1) How's the current state of the game, in your view?
2) Does my plan sound reasonable to you?
3) How is PBEM working?

THANKS!

Current state of the game:

Solitair (and PBEM games, which are using solitair as a base at the moment). There are bugs present, however general play is good. Production planning is sometimes an issue and so is Vichy when there is no Free France created. During liberation there might also be some issues around.

Netplay: We're currently hammering on issues with naval interceptions, Anti Aircraft fire and some conquest problems involving Italy and we're about to see what happens during liberation. Apart from that, the same problems which are present in Solitair are also present in Netplay.

MWIF is based on WIF7. So sometimes you will see things which are different. However, personally, I don't want to go back to the board with WiF, if only due to the fact that MWIF enforces the rules for you. I remember spending a lot of time reading the rule book and getting into discussions about where the comma stands at what does that mean exactly...

I never liked vassal, because it doesn't enforce the rules...

I would agree with Centuur, so I'll not repeat his answer.

In case you are curious about the changes from RAW7 (WIF FE) and WIF CE, there is a document a volunteer has been gathering and is still under edition, but it seems to be addressing most of the changes... Beware, it's 30+ pages...

Thanks for the feedback, and for the link to the RAW7 to WIFCE changes!

My friend who didn't have MWIF yet just took the plunge, and I plan to in the next day or two as well. I think we're both going in with realistic expectations, and I appreciate your perspectives.

I went ahead and bought the game. Initially, very impressed by the magnitude of it all!

I checked the forum and couldn't find anything... are there links to download JPGs (or whatever) of the maps?

Not JPGs, but take a look at tm.asp?m=1555903

Hope this helps,

WIF can be played in an online platform for "virtual boardgaming" called Vassal. I don't like it too much because it doesn't enforce the rules, and this is VITAL in a game with so many and so complex rules, which generate frequent disagreements.

That said, they have maps. I think this ones come from there. You can see the original WIF board game maps, but still without the adaptations Steve had to do to convert it into a computer game, mainly off-map hexes and different scale Asia & Pacific normal hexes.

But it may give you a general idea.

A second one, so you can see hexes occupied by counters in the previous one.

My son and I play this regularly. We are in love with this game and basically it is our ww2 game for live at the moment.

We use teamviewer to play and that makes it even more enjoyable.

Since a while I moved to the Vassal version of the game - that allows the latest rules to be used.

But by itself MWiF is quite impressive, and with some cunning one can circumvent the limits to play Multiplayer.
By what I've read Netplay is getting advanced anyhow - which is even better.

Even if by now it's a shelved game simply installed on the HDD, I am not repented of the aquiral. Compared to many, many other games around here it has the enormous plus that is a conversion from a tabletop game - which means it is a 'human' game in its reaches, purpose and playability. Not something that you need to have a mental wank in order to understand some relatively obscure mechanic, or that your unit combat force is the result of some astral equation between supply, morale, readyness, a few other random factors and the like.

I admit I am not too fond of playing solo - but a lot of players are also into that.

I play head to head and netplay. It's the only game I relish. The rest are just a way to forget about work.
