I downloaded this game on Steam. I don't remember registering the game, or receiving a serial number. Uninstalled and reinstalled on Steam and got the same directory error. Please help me get this game back. Thanks.

I have this on Steam. It was updated automatically to 4.1.0.20 and I have no problems with it. What is 'the same directory error' that you mention? When you install the game the registration number shows up in a window for you to copy.

Does any new scenarios go into the Matrix folder or the My documents folder where I copied all of the scenarios to get the game working after .20 patch?

Thx

I was about to download and install this new version, but after reading two pages of problems from players just 4 days after 4.1.0.20's release, I decided to forego for now.
Any possibility for a relook at the whole thing to make it more USERFRIENDLY?
I really enjoy TOAW IV and therefore hesitate to fiddle around with its installation and run the risk of doing permanent damage requiring hours of uncertain toil to set straight again.

Hi Everyone,

Apologies for the missing folder issue. It's a rather embarassing error, the game's EXE wants to do what we specifically didn't want it to do - copying the default scenarios to My Games. But, it tries to do so without creating the main Scenarios folder... So if you uninstalled the previous version like I asked you to do and you had no custom scenarios in there, the uninstaller did it's job and did not leave the Scenarios folder in place, but then that's messed up the .20 build.

Anyways, we are working hard to roll out a patch for you that fixes this.

In the meantime, you can manually fix it for your build this way:

1. Go to Documents, then My Games, and then to The Operational Art of War IV folder
2. Create a new folder called "Scenarios" You can leave it empty.

We are sorry for the trouble!

When i upload photo, it says ‘jpeg not supported.’ Anyway, the exact error message is: ‘Directory Create: The system cannot find the path specified.’

The game was working just fine until this error came up. It happened on its own, without me doing anything. Maybe Steam auto-updated a bad file?

Now, when i start a new game, It’ll take me to the WW1 scenarios, which is the last directory i had open before the game malfunctioned. I can access those. If i try to access the other scenarios, I get the above error.

Yes this is the error that got into this version unfortunately. Please see how to manually fix it while waiting for our patch, in my post just above yours.

I haven't got very far with the editor because the scenario I have been working on - without issues - now will suddenly not open at all with this version of the game. I decided if I could get the map open I would rebuild the oob. No soap! It says the map is the wrong size for this version of the game. The scenario is very large - and I have cheerfully worked on it ever since TOAW IV came out. Has someone changed the map parameters with this version? Please say it isn''t so. Like I said, I can't even get my main project off the ground so I haven't encounter any other of the myriad of complaints I have seen about this patch. Should I just uninstall the game, then reinstall - ignoring the previous twp patches?

1) Uninstall your current copy of TOAWIV. Easiest is to use the Uninstall shortcut from the game's Start Menu folder on Windows. Alternatively you can go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Windows and select TOAWIV.
Uninstall will not remove the player-made scenarios you have downloaded. They will be still available when you are done with the installation. Same applies to your saved games.
2) Download the 4.1.0.20 from The Members Area. You need to have registered the game there for it to appear.
3) Run the installer, follow the instructions. Enter the serial number you have received when purchasing the game, when prompted
4) Enjoy the game!

I downloaded 4.1.0.20 and it was some small 4 megabit file. Opened it and it said,"You don't have the game installed".

Sounds like you downloaded the .21 patch file.

After uninstall, you first need to get the .20 game installer from the members area, ca 800MB:

Then run the .21 patch.

If you uninstall, you'll have to reinstall. No upgrade is a stand-alone program. If that were the case, no one would have to buy the game - just download the free upgrade!

Having trouble with this upgrade. When I click on the link and log in it just gives me the option to buy the program, not to upgrade.

Where is the upgrade link?

Edit: Nevermind. Figured out I have to register the game first.

Darn if I can find the 4.0.0.20 patch. The Members Area the only download 4.0.0.21. That leads to a steam-api.dll not found message when I run the game. Despite a delete Steam, and a reinstall of the game from the disc.

Thanks for any ideas.

The error message that is given by the game engine means that the steam_api.dll file is living in the wrong spot.
It's in "My Documents\My Games\TOAW IV and needs to be moved to the directory where the game engine lives:

Fixed. I found the Game Installer in the Matrix member side, which as 4/0.0.20. I have been loading and reloading and reloading from my CD, which is 4.0.0.11, which is No Go for 4.0.0.21.
Thanks all
