Thailand - how to align to JP?

Post by jjdenver »

I think Thailand historically aligned to JP - is there a way for that to happen in the game? Thailand shows as 0% aligned to either side. Is there an event that aligns them or JP needs to use diplo chits?

Thailand was neutral in the beginning of the war, then Japan attacked and after that Thailand cooperated with Japan.

Using diplo on Thailand is a huge waste, there are way more important countries you need to prefer in the early stages of war.
The income from Thailand should be 10MPP.

Event for getting Thailand on Axis side pops up at 10.2.1942, and Japan need to own Hong Kong and Malaya.

Alternatively you can invade Thailand earlier with only small resistance with the negative effect of USA moving more towards the Allies.

That event is a month too late. Japan and Thailand agreed to corporate in Dec '41 and that corporation should have nothing to do with owning Hong Kong and Malaya. There is nothing I could find historically that would support owning those two locations to have any impact on Thailand decision to join Japan.

The script heading is technically correct in that it was on the 25th January that the Thai government declared war on the US and UK, but the date within the script is later (not sure why).

I think the conditions are just there to make it have a chance of happening when Japan has begun her conquests, rather than before.

Thailand doesn't have an army so it can easily be invaded by Japan and taken over. In reality it was invaded and then an agreement was reached as the Thais had no hope of stopping the Japanese, but in game terms the country is easy for Japan to take as it advances west towards Burma and India.

But I'm wondering now whether to bring the potential date of this script forward, and change the setting from Malaya being surrendered to the Axis, to Indochina being in Axis hands. Keeping the Hong Kong condition in there as otherwise Thailand could join the Axis while Japan is still at peace with the UK and USA.

Why not make the condition of Thailand joining Japan for Japan to be at war with the US. That seems to be a better fit historically than anything else.

If I could, I would, but there is no 100% foolproof way to do that unfortunately. Nearly, but not quite.

Changing the script to the acquisition of French Indo China makes more sense then the surrender of Malaya. Force Z was sent from Malaya in an attempt to acquire the coastal areas in southern Thailand, as a defensive measure. It didn't quite work out of course.
