Anyone tried under Wine or Winex on Unix

Korsun Pocket is a the second game using the award winning SSG Decisive Battles game engine. Korsun Pocket recreates the desperate German attempt to escape encirclement on the Russian Front early in 1944. The battle is a tense and exciting struggle, with neither side having a decisive advantage, as the Russians struggle to form the pocket, then try to resist successive German rescue efforts and last ditch attempts at breakout.

Anyone tried under Wine or Winex on Unix

Post by redwolf »

Hi,

did anyone try KP under Wine or Winex on Unix? If so, what version exactly and what were the results?

I once tested TOA2 which seemed to run fine, but I didn't play it intensivly.

Thanks

Hmmm a challenge. I haven't had too many successes with wine or winex(from source), at least in terms of games, but maybe I'll have the time to give it a try on sunday and let you know . . .

KP under wine.. I usually have a few glasses or a bottle before I play.. so yeah KP works fine under wine.. I recommend a bottle of Brokenwood Cricket pitch myself. :)
Isn't that bizarre?

I didn't have much time to do anything else than buying the game :)

So, Winex (current CVS version) does not run KP, crashes with an exception early on.

The current CVS version of Wine (no "x") does not compile, so I didn't test it. Will try lastest snapshot later this week.

I had to install vmware on my current test box and didn't come around to give it all the gaming goodies so no test here either. But I would be surprised if it didn't run (famous last words).

How many people here would use KP on Wine or Winex if it ran?

I would, but I'd sure like to see someone consider a port of a wargame. There simply are no quality titles for linux, and of all gaming genres, this is probably one us linux "eggheads" would go for.

I would if my buggy VIA motherboard would stop crashing with my Aureal sounds . Any patch to make more games work in Linux is good ;).

Wine (no x) doesn't work either, running into apparently the same exception as Winex. Probably the copy protection  it crashes when the Windows version checks the CD.

Can't test vmware right now because all my virtual installations are Windows 95 and KP seems to insist on a DirectX version not available there.

See if you can find a no-cd executible for KP. I haven't seen one, but www.gamecopyworld.com is a place to start.

It will have the added advantage of allowing you to play without the cd under windows.

Mind you, I'm not advocating piracy here, just convenience.

Linux has a few apps that do just that, including VMWare. wine is another one, it's free and open source, but since it's not a full windows environment (it just emulates certain dll's and other things), it's a problem to get newer apps running.
