What a meat grinder at Chunking.

Lots of bloody noses for the Allies elsewhere.

Very good work.

Thanks, I keep trying. [:)] Working on testing a deep bombardment to hit those island based B17s.

Early October, 1942

Allies love their minefields, and are set to lay some at Sitkin, the site of many a naval skirmish. Several small destroyer only task forces are heading in for a night time skirmish with the ubiquitous PT boat TFs and then hopefully the CMs preferably before the minefield is sown.

While the Allies think I am focusing on Sitkin, 9 CA split into two SAGs are heading on a circuitous route to bombard Umnak, the home of the B17 scourge. Can they get within striking range undetected?

Showing the extreme Allied buildup, at least to me for this date, in the Great Cold Northern waters.

It is kind of funny, I was willing to cede these waters to the Allies, but then they went in with such a big force at Attu (2 div) I had to surround and destroy them. If they had gone in very small, or slower, I probably would never have bothered.

The Allies were sending multiple divisions against my pitifully out classed JNAF ENG units...talk about disparity of force.

An interesting case study here, in Luzon.

The Allies like to park a sub right in Manila harbor...so I transferred an excellent (skill 70 ASW) Lilly squadron and set them to ASW at 80% 0 range. They can spot the sub, but don't attack, and I noticed the altitude was set at 5k. Now, several years back I ran some very unscientific tests to check if altitude had any bearing on the number of attacks generated, and then I concluded that it didn't seem to.

But, I lowered them down this turn to 2k.

Also in the hex is a squadron of three 15knot SC, pretty good for Japan at this point in the game, and today I swapped two commanders out.

Will be curious to see if they can nail this sub.

Load tracker with maps, select maps, filter for sub sightings. A great, great tool. Those are turn numbers where enemy subs were spotted.

I have posted this image several times before in my AARs...

Apparently I missed it.

Does it work only off of enemy subs that are actually detected on the map on a given turn? If so, it will be missing out on some that were spotted momentarily during the replay but then moved (and reset their minimum DL, although not necessarily their max DL) during the rest of the turn resolution, no?

Three squadrons of 3 destroyers each steam into Sitkin, at least those are their orders. One squadron wanders into Adak, and its big minefield, and surprise...no mines are hit. I guess our recon has been doing their job...and this spells opportunity.

Meanwhile the destroyers that make Sitkin find PT boats and SC sinking a few, while one destroyer blunders into a mine...we missed the accursed Allied minelayers...but the damaged destroyer retreats into Adak...where it is not aerially attacked.

So, the next day, three Kongo's and their blessed 30kt speed run into Adak to deliver some IJN justice on the planes there, but first they are surprised to see Raleigh and many destroyers...

The Kongo's don't disappoint, and it was a good thing I didn't get greedy and bombard with destroyers because the bombardment force tangled with the SAG destroyer group sans Mugford and Raleigh again, plus a new destroyer group.

The bold plan...the belly of the beast...the home of the bomber scourge! Severe storms envelop and cover the Cruiser force, for now.

Iboat reports, a little dated, have the Allied CVs and BB on the West Coast...but we could easily blunder into some battleships or worse here.

Use waypoints to get rid of that extra hex movement.

Use the F6 hot key to turn on hex side terrain - maybe the base cannot be reached from the NW side of the island?

Looks like Port Blair - you can only approach that base from one side of the island.

Daylight arrives, and the bombarding six heavy cruisers haven't made their night bombardment schedule, but there is a hint of smoke to the north, but Task Force 8 gets down to some serious destruction when they launch the Long Lances at unsuspecting merchant ships!

Leaving port, survivors clinging to flotsam and jetsam in the cold waters, Task Force 8 looks to make a retreat from the very large Allied runways that are fully operational. Uh-oh!
